Draft News

I know many on this board have thrown around the name of Mercedes Lewis of UCLA as their draft wish and no question we could use a TE.  Now a few more TEs will be available.

University of Maryland's TE Vernon Davis and Georgia's TE Leonard Pope have both declared for the draft.

availability
This should almost guarantee that one of the three will be available by the time the Bears make their pick late in the first round. All three are studs and if Angelo picks something other than a TE at this point, firejerryangelo.com will be getting hits from me again. (O-line is a possibility, but ONLY if there's a "can't miss" prospect and [gasp] all three TEs have been taken)

OTOH, I wouldn't mind keeping Clark around, but only as a #2 TE. Our depth at that position is ridiculously bad.

I think
Davis and Lewis will be well gone before us, I haven't heard a projection yet on Pope.

As far as firing JA if he doesn't take a TE that is a bit harsh.  Our team is looking in pretty good shape right now, player wise that is all him.

I think we have to be open where we are.  If a good TE is there, then fine, but if somebody really good falls, like Stephen Jackson did for St. Louis a few years back we need to grab them.  We can find a good TE in the 2nd or 3rd.

the numbers
Marcedes Lewis:
School: UCLA
Height: 6-6
Weight: 256 lbs. Age: 21
Pos: TE
Class: Senior
This season: REC 58 | YDS 741 | TD 10

Leonard Pope:
School: Georgia
Height: 6-7
Weight: 250 lbs. Age: 22
Pos: TE
Class: Junior
This season: REC 33 | YDS 491 | TD 3

Vernon Davis:
School: Maryland
Height: 6-3
Weight: 250 lbs. Age: 21
Pos: TE
Class: Junior
This season: REC 51 | YDS 871 | TD 6

Of the three, I still like Lewis the best. Do I think he'll be available for the Bears by the time they pick? Maybe, depends on the combine results, and needs of other teams. The scouts inc big board on espn.com lists V.Davis above M.Lewis. I personally think that Lewis has the better package of size and production.

And no, I don't think Jerry should be fired. I'll give him props for assembling this dynamite "D", but if he makes a WTF? type pick, my respect for him will decline.

TEs
I'm a fan of the first two, if only for their size.  A big target and a good run blocker, that's what I want in my TE.

looking at those numbers
I would say that Pope isn't worth the first round.  What about that kid, Fasano, from ND.  What year is he in?

Although, good money would be on for him to come back, but some of those ND boys stock might not get higher than it is now.

Have you...
Ever seen Pope play?  He's a monster freak.  I think he could dominate cause he's HUGE and a great athlete. Plus you can't compare Lewis numbers from pass happy UCLA to Pope's.

NO
I live in ACC country, so I don't get much Georgia up here.  I don't care what size he is as long as he can hlep our pass game.

But don't forget...
... still gotta have an offensive coordinator that will consider the TE as a receiver, not just a blocker.

Of course, who wants to call a play for a TE when we have none (to speak of)?

Biggest weakness...
This leads me to wonder aloud; what is the Bear's biggest weakness?

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Jan 3, 2006 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

weaknesses
I'll bite:

In terms of positions that should be enhanced through the draft, I put them in this order...

  1. TE - no depth, Clark hasn't lived up to expectations.
  2. OL - getting older, but signing Garza helps them get younger, can start too...
  3. WR - there have been flashes, but no consistency,   mistakes have been made, and everyone seems to have a bad case of dropsy. They just need to make plays when they have to. No more TD drops or 3rd down drops guys.
Otherwise, the only weakness the team has now is that the offense hasn't yet jelled. That and receiver dropsy.

Anyone have an injury report on McGowan?

Draft Talk
I will start talking about the draft on....February 13th. Don't get me wrong, I love draft talk as much as the next guy, but the Bears have games left to be played.
Say it with me now "The first place Chicago Bears." Now doesn't that just make you feel warm all over.
