Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Troy Smith

Most draft pundits are calling Troy Smith a late first round pick.  If available - would you take him?  He reminds me a lot of McNabb becaue of his ability to buy time with scrambling.  Rex has one more year, Griese will be around for several years.  I think Smith could be a real stud - What do you guys think?

We don't need to waste any more time
and picks on young QBs.  Unless Grossman bombs out the rest of the way, he will still be our starter.  No need to take another QB when we can fill other spots.

bigger needs
I still think we have bigger needs than QB in the next draft. WR/TE, OL, LB (if Briggs leaves) will be better positions to target in the next draft.

Of course it depends on whether or not Grossman totally fails as QB, but I'm skeptical. I'd like to see Posluszny (the PSU LB) get drafted, maybe Garrett Wolfe in a later round. Otherwise, I'm pretty clueless about who's out there this year.

Unleash your inner Grabowski.

Given the position we will be drafting
and JA's constant need to trade down I think OL is the place to go unless somebody falls to us.

Can he throw?
Does he have the arm strength?

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 15, 2006 2:32 PM CST reply actions

The scouting report
on him says his arm is plenty big.

the knocks on him are his size (6'1", 215) ,that he doesn't see the entire field all the time and that  he is still raw due to only starting for two years.

by Adam T on Dec 15, 2006 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

No, I don't want him
Troy Smith is basically a good scrambler with some bulk to his body, but he only stands in at 6' or 6'1". If people want us to roll Grossman out so he can find passing lanes than we are going to have to do the same with Smith. His accuracy has been alright, but he doesn't look like he has the accuracy yet to make it right away in the NFL. Also, Smith has been more of a game manager than a playmaker at Ohio State. Smith has done a good job at Ohio State, but I don't see him being a great NFL QB.

I agree...
With most of what you said, however:

In the NFL today, athletic QBs are on the rise.  The problem is arm strength and accuracy.  IF, he has that then he might be a good pickup as a project.  I don't think he'll be a first rounder anyway.  But not a bad 3rd round pick for a team.

these same things
were once said about Drew Brees as well. Just keep that in mind.

Funny that you showed up...
First, I was really thinking about Tony Romo when I was writing that post.  But Drew Brees?  I never really took him for an athletic mobile out of the pocket passer.  But, I don't watch too many Saints games.

Also, Brees won't ever come close to these numbers ever again.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 16, 2006 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

funny you mentioned Romo
because he does have a rocket arm which is very accurate. But Brees is the real deal and I know you wish you had him instead of Grossman.

by Terry @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 16, 2006 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

Brees instead of Grossman...
Let's wait on this one for an overall opinion.  For this year only, I would take Brees but I think Brees is a one year fluke and will be exposed as he leads the Saints to a rather lackluster 6 - 10 or 7 - 9 next year.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 16, 2006 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

one year fluke??
he was a stud for the Chargers and if it wasn't for his shoulder injury last season, I guarantee you that he still is their qb this season.

by Terry @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 17, 2006 3:05 PM CST up reply actions

he will never...
touch these numbers ever again.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 17, 2006 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

doesn't mean
he still isn't one of the best qb's in the league. He'll always put up good numbers.

One of the best?
Meh, top half.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 18, 2006 4:24 AM CST up reply actions

try top 5
easily

by Terry @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 18, 2006 10:30 AM CST up reply actions

keep in mind
that the Saints were 3-13 last season and now have a shot at being the number 2 seed in the NFC just behind your Bears, and the reason is very simple..Drew Brees.

by Terry @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 18, 2006 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

And...
a healthy McCallister, Reggie Bush, Coltson, etc.

Brees did not orchestrate the turnaround by himself.

But I would agree with you that Brees is VERY good.

by big_lowitzki on Dec 18, 2006 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

And...
that the Saints have something like 35 different guys on their 53-man roster from last year.

And a new coach.

By the way, what numbers are you talking about? 25-30 TD's? He'll be in that range for at least another three years. That isn't much.

The 4500+ yards? Heh... that doesn't say much as there are only three QB's EVER to have gotten 4,800 yards or more.

Saying "he won't touch these numbers again," doesn't really make sense to me.

by tyger1147 on Dec 19, 2006 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

OK fine..
He won't make the pro bowl next year unless people drop out due to injuries.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 19, 2006 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

who's better in the NFC?
McNabb? Hasslebeck? Maybe, but Brees is right there with those guys, so I don't agree your statement is necessarily true.

by Terry @ Windy City Gridiron on Dec 19, 2006 5:48 PM CST up reply actions

Are you nuts...
Brees is no where near McNabb or Hasselbeck.  Not even on the same planet.  The only reason that Brees is up there now, is that the level of QB in the NFL is really low.
