PACKERS/BEARS- Game Thread
For the Packers to make the play offs now that the Giants have won a miracle must take place. They must beat the Bears and then something like 7 teams need to loose. I don't recall all the names, but with Dallas and NO going down, it seems closer. I believe with the Seattle win, the Pack are now out.

Wow ....
23-0 at half in a meaningless game wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that we've had our 1st stringers in the entire time. And that the Packers are not a Playoff team.
I am not looking forward to the playoffs whatsoever at this point. We are playing like a sub-.500 team these past few weeks, for sure.
It's time 2 change.
Perhaps his performance is a...blessing? Would we want to see this in 2 weeks?? Rather NOW than then?

let's see a show of hands...
with the opportunity to play at a high level vs a motivated opponent, the bears instead drop a turd in the punch bowl of new years' eve. luckily, bets don't get settled on the half-time score; there are still 30 minutes for this club to prove they are contenders and not pretenders.

And, for that matter
Also -- if A. Kraemer's sideline comments are correct
"...suddenly a sense of urgency on the Bears sideline.." (after 2 scores)
Where the hell was the 'sense of urgency' going INTO the game? Were they NOT prepared properly?
All of this is sickening.

The Pack looks
I went to the Chargers/Cards this afternoon, and the Chargers didn't take the petal off -- they did pull Rivers/Tomlinson in the 2nd half, so the offense stalled....but that team is ready to run the table.
The only way they are going to be beaten (if the Bears can stagger to Miami) is by a veteran QB, attacking their defense -- Warner did well in the second half against the Chargers, who DID leave in their first string D.

This game meant nothing, one of Grossman's INT was deflected at the line. Griese was just as bad if not worse.
The D gave up 10 pts essentially.
Certainly not a great effort, but maybe we convinced Favre to stay for another year, which would be awesome.

Belated, yess...
Who thinks this team's going into the playoffs complacent?
I'll take an ugly, ugly loss in a meaningless game if it leaves the players with chips on their shoulders and something to prove.

Are you confident right now?
OTOH, I will admit that Benson looked like a man amongst boys tonight, and I think we'll be in good shape if we play an opponent whose run defense is the weakest. That's all we can hope for at this point.
Not so sure

This is how you expect
I now feel like a fool defending this team as the NFC's best. If you can't get motivated to play the Packers on national television, SOMEBODY's at fault -- either there's no self motivation, or shame on Lovie for not getting this team ready.
The Eagles/Saints are the NFC teams with forward momentum -- and the Saints didn't play ANYBODY today, so that game doesn't count.
The Bears peaked early. If this team wins A game in the playoffs it's a frickin' miracle.
Yeah, in Game 16 -- the sky IS falling. I kept denying it until NOW. I've been following the Bears since 1965. I know a championship team when I see one - it ain't this team. (Uh, the last one was 1985.) However, there's a championship squad where I live now. The Chargers will run the table against ANY NFC team.
At least the embarrassment is NOW, not in the Super Bowl.
I hope I'm wrong, but I've followed Chicago teams way too long, so I know better.

Don't get me wrong
I'm not sure about the Saints momentum. They lost at home to the Redskins and also played a meaningless game today they lost and didn't look too great against the Giants to be honest. The Eagles do have momentum, we'll find out if that matters.
I don't expect the Bears to win the Super Bowl, there are at least 3 better teams in the AFC right now. San Diego looks great right now but Marty's got a history longer than anyone of choking the playoffs away.
Am I supremely confident we'll roll through the NFC at the moment? No. But I don't see anyone I'd rather be right now out of the NFC playoff teams.

This IS
In retrospect, it IS hard to believe with minimal conversation between the Chargers coach and GM, this team isn't distracted. That was a major concern before the season. It's as if it all vanished, with the type of season San Diego has had.
I think when you have a future HOFer ar RB, and Smith was right about the ability of Rivers -- (Marty wanted Brees re-signed) there's smiles all around.
If the Chargers win -- Marty retires. If they fail, he's fired. Simple as that.

You forget one thing Rob...
by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Jan 1, 2007 2:15 PM CST up reply actions
I didn't really forget it
And for the record, it's Chargers, Ravens and Pats. Colts can't stop anybody and there's no way they'll get there. Ravens are basically us, but the consistent version. They've also had some amazingly lucky wins this year and I mean luck like balls getting tipped falling in the right hands, not luck like forcing turnovers or having a return guy who's better than everyone else.
Pats have Brady/Belichek, as long as their against you, you need to worry.

We're not that far off...
by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Jan 1, 2007 3:00 PM CST up reply actions
well what do you know...
the d gave up 10 points, and approx 4,000 yards. the only reason ahman green was not able to eclipse jim taylor's career rushing stats was that favre found so many easy receiving targets.
this team has been out to lunch for a month, not just tonight. devin hester allows them to win a track meet on monday night in st. louis, they beat the bucs in overtime after having them down by 3 td's, and stagger past a lion team they had drastically outplayed in sept.
griese's new years resolution must have been to spare lovie any possibility of a qb controversy. he succeeded beyond any shadow of a doubt; the bears are now proven to be a club that employs three backup qb's. grossman leaves the game having completed more passes to packers than to bears; good to see his "mid-season slump" is a thing of the past.
what is the difference between the 2005 bears and the 2006 bears, going into the playoffs? one thing only: a healthy, but crummy, 1st string qb.
the bears only saving grace is the competition in the nfc is dreadful, and they cannot face the "hot" club (eagles) in the 1st round like they were forced to do with the panthers in january 2006.
you may rationalize/justify/minimize this any way you wish; this club is not ready to play playoff-grade football.

Guilty as charged
we were up by 22 over the Rams in the 2nd half and that Devin Hester is the best returner in the game right now and will be playing for us in the playoffs.
that we kicked the Bucs ass for three quarters and the D played like crap for one quarter before we still won the game.
and then we played 2 glorified preseason games in which we were 1-1.
anyway, we certainly haven't put a complete team effort out there for awhile, that's certainly a concern. The good thing about this team is that all 3 units are well above average (depending on which Grossman we get) and a complete team effort isn't always needed to win.
As I mentioned above, there isn't another team in the NFC I'd rather be right now.
