Jones or Benson

I am interested to know how you guys feels about the RB situation.  I was prompted to ask this question due to a blurb on SI.com that quoted the trib as saying that fans would be calling for Benson soon b/c of the poor play of Jones(http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/scorecard/09/20/truth.rumors.nfl/index.html?cnn=yes).

I don't feel like Jones has done a bad job.  I think it is working ok the way it is right now.  However, it is obvious that our running game isn't doing as well as it did last year, but look at our passing game, which was non-existent last year! Both of these guys have about a 3 ypc average.  In my mind, Jones has proven that he should still be starting over Benson.  I really do like both of these guys on our team.  Benson is a good bruising style back to watch, and he will be a very good running back.  I would like to see a scheme where both of these guys get their touches and are both happy with the situation.  I am not too naive to think that both of these would be happy with 10-15 touches each, but it would be nice.

I think the hub-bub is alot to do about nothing at this point - perhaps the writers are just trying to find something controversial to write about and this is the only thing that is near to "juicy".  So, now that I just talked in circles about how I like both guys, but Jones should start, but it would be great if Benson does well, and everyone could be a big happy family, and maybe if Benson does great he could start, and we could still have a happy backfield.  What do you guys think?

Well, right now
defenses are lining up to stop the run.  Now that Grossman has had some good games, they might not put up 10 man fronts and TJ might have a little room to run.

exactly
coming into the season, how would you have played defense against the bears? make them pass the ball, since we couldn't the last 3+ years. i would be pretty surprised to see if the vikings game isn't the big "breakthrough" for the running game.

Agreed...
I expect big running numbers this week.

Definitely
The running totals will go up as teams realize that Rex can beat them too.
first the Rush...now the Bears.

Blitz Pickup
If we want to keep our QB healthy, it's gotta be TJ.

Can we some how...
Find a way to get a 24 year old Walter Payton?  Not only was he a fabulous runner, but he would deliver bone-crushing blocks to linemen and blitzing linebackers.

Rest in peace Sir Walter.

I'll go with TJ for now
Until the line starts opening up bigger holes, TJ's great vision will pay off more than Benson's attacking style.

Agreed.
It's TJ's vision that puts him above CB at least for now.

TJ is doing fine, and the writers at SI are just showing once again how out of touch they can be.

jones will start to play a lot better
After getting a little frustrated with tj I took a closer look at Jones' stats and I am beginning to change my tune. for a running back to really have a nice average per carry they are going to need more than 20 or less carries in a game, youve got to havea commitment to the run.  Against the Vikings Jones was given only 18 carries. In all three games this year Jones has had runs of 17, 15 and 17 yards and with 5-10 more carries Jones could easily bust out a couple more of those as defenses wear down towards the end of a game. Benson has averaged only 2.7 this year and his longest run is just 7 yards. As Grossman continues to develop and gain more respect throughout the league I would expect more holes will open up in the running game and that Thomas Jones will put together a nice string of 100 yard games. With a difficult Sunday night game against the Seahawks I expect that the Bears will have to turn to Jones to carry a significant portion of the load and he will have to produce for the Bears offense to get the play-action to work and allow Berrian to break free down the field. With three more games before the bye week I give Jones till the Monday night game at Arizona before I would turn to Cedric Benson.
