BEARS Fall 20-10

The Bears still played spoiler even though they lost.  With the Bears going down, Detroit, Philly and Arizona along with the Bears are out of the play off race.

I really don't want to look at the stats, the offense was horrible.

The defense and special teams both played well enough to win.  Urlacher in particular had a good game with an INT, a fumble recovery and 2 sacks.

More on this one tomorrow.

4th
While I hated the play-calling tonight, I did not hate the 4th and 1 pass.  The play worked... Orton just made an awful throw.

You're right
The play was there to be made, but Orton just missed the throw.  I thought at first that we should have pounded the run, but it was probably the most creative/unexpected call made by Turner all night

Orton really sucked tonight too ...
there is, simply, too much blame to go around tonight.  But I start with the steamiest pile of dung and work my way down the chain.

To be fair
Orton is making his first start in 2 years on the 29th ranked offense in the NFL against arguably the best defense in the NFL behind the oldest O-Line in the NFL with a lousy running game against the #1 ranked run defense.  We all knew he wasn't going to come in and play like a Pro Bowler - he can't make up for the rest of the team.

Having said that, he missed quite a few throws, most damaging was the 4th and 1 incompletion

larger point ...
is that this team is shitty, and the silver bullet cannot be found by changing QB's.

anyone behind that line with no running game.

we knew that
week 2

i don't think anyone is still thinking qb change is the only requirement, if anyone was ever stupid enough to in the first palce.

this is more of a "seeing what you got" exercise.

with a decent OL and a OC
i think our offense would be decent. not good, but decent enough. the line created no holes all year for our running game/no protection for our QBs, and turner's play calling is among the worst in the league. i really hope we spend our early draft picks on our real needs - offensive linemen and safeties - and not a QB. put tom brady behind our line w/ ron turner's plays and i bet you'd see the golden boy fail miserably, too. so i actually think drafting a good OT in the first round (we'll pick between 5-13, so we should get a good one), another lineman in the 2nd or 3rd round, and a competent OC will make our offense decent next year, be it rex, griese, or orton.

by guy incognito on Dec 17, 2007 11:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

agreed
i don't thik a competent offense really exist for griese, but I'll roll with other two until the pressure builds and they collapse. but for now I'll be happy just to get to a point where we have games that mean something.

Tough to watch
Our defense had 4 turnovers, our offense had 7-8 3 and outs.  It's like 2005 all over again.

Things I'm furious about:
Ron Turner
Fred Miller
False Starts
Personal Fouls
Missed Tackles

I've already started thinking about the moves for next season.  I'm trying to calculate the salary cap hits for cutting certain players (Miller, Archuleta, Mike Brown) and how we can draft/sign a few key spots and turn it all around.

The worst part is that in 2001 we went 13-3 and lost in the playoffs.  Everyone called it a fluke and they were right.  Last year we did the same and I was sure that we could keep it up and we couldn't do it.  It was another fluke.  I get sick watching his team.

ESPN just said the bears were 1/13 on 3rd down.  That's disgusting.

If I can get my salary cap document straighted out I'll send it to the board admins.

missed tackles
yea... they were frustrating.

but i thought that they tackled really, really well in the first half.  some of the best tackling all year.

but from the 71 yard pass (and the five missed tackles that went with it), the tackling went down from there.

time of possession
back to 2005 - the defense forced so many punts and turnovers and was on the field all night.  I have no doubt that they were fatigued, but it's tough to watch the offense keep on pounding and our guys tire out.

Our pass protection has been really bad all year.  Teams continue to hit the soft spot in the seam and also the underneath routes.  You have to hand it to MN, they have two incredible backs in Peterson and Taylor

No, that stat on 3rd downs isn't right ...
It was 1 for 14!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy shitballs.  That has to be some kind of record.  Put in Rex, um, Griese, um, ORTON!, um, is Moses Moreno still available?

O-Line/OC
Most of my disappointment is with Turner and the O-Line

Um...
I think the score was 20 - 13 not 20 -10

and as far as the announcers said and sportsline.com backs them up...

WHY NO TIME OUT AFTER 3RD DOWN!?!?!?!??!!??!!

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least make them punt.  Hell, put 11 guys on the line.  How do you leave a time out on the board

and if orton throws to the other shoulder, its a td.

3 bears on WGN just botched this ...
some guy just called in to their post-game and they were like "no that doesn't sound right, I think it wouldn't have mattered, it still would have been 3rd down".  Um, scroll down to the bottom of the play-by-play link on the nfl gamecenter and it's quite clear there were 15 secs left, with one timeout left, and 4rth down.  Time clicks off the clock, still with that TO in our pocket.

Is that a TO in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

O-Line/ Offense in General
Overall the defense played great. A whole lot better than the past few games. A few missed tackles, but the only reason the game was close is because of the overall defensive play.
Yes, there could have been better play calling, and Orton could have performed better but the real culprit is the offensive line - They Suck!

this should seal turner's fate, right?
after yet another head scratcher of a game plan, i think there's no way turner isn't fired after the season. the 2 garret wolfe runs up the middle into the williams boys on our 2 yard line were maybe the best exhibits of why this man is an atrocious OC. the offense 'ain't good, but man, turner's calls are making us go from mediocre to terrible. they can't possibly bring him back after the stinker tonight, can they?

by guy incognito on Dec 17, 2007 11:48 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

if so
that's probably the end of grossman, which will lead to at least 3 suicides here.

i dunno
i still think rex is by and far the best QB on our roster, and we should be able to sign him to a reasonable deal with incentives. give him a decent line, receivers who don't drop everything, and plays that aren't entirely predictable or shitty, i imagine he'd be just fine. yeah, he knows turner's playbook well, but turner certainly didn't do him many favors this year, anyway, with his game plans.

if jerry angelo is still our GM
(and he definately should be) Grossman will be the starting QB here in week 1 next year (barring injury)

Lose Out!!!!!
How much you want to bet the Bears win out and go from a possible top 5 top 10 pick to #17, #18?  That would be the icing on the cake to this miserable fucking season.

I want them to beat the Packers ...
I'm not convinced anyway that we'll do a good job with a high draft pick.  Probably pick someone like Benson again, or maybe Cade Mcnown.  I'd rather we beat the Packers and take our chances with a deeper pick.  I know, that makes no rational sense, but since when is being a Bears fan rational?

Of Course
you want to beat the Pack.  But I'd rather see them get a Top 10 pick, maybe trade out and get some more picks.  It's obvious that this whole team needs an overhaul.  We can't rely on the D anymore and if Briggs leaves, holy shit we're in trouble.

the D
played pretty well, until the end of the game. and that'll happen when your offense goes 1/14 on third downs and you are on the field 40 minutes of a 60 minute game.

not sure if anyone
else mentioned it or not, but we have now had three quarterbacks have trouble with the snap. although none have been as bad as grossman, still warrants mentioning.

Why all this dump on Orton?
He played fine for not having played in 2 years, for having no Oline, for having a terrible O-coordinator.

The muffed snap went straight to his feet.  It never came up.

The Oline spent the entire game on its ass.  He never had time to step up into a pass or look downfield.  The play calling was pathetically conservative (it might have had to be because of the lack of time).  He had no run game support.

Despite this he still managed to avoid a number of sacks, stepping around some tackles, moving out of the pocket.

The intentional grounding call was complete shit.  The receiver was right there and he was hit as he was throwing so there's no way he got all of his arm into it.

The interception was not a bad throw.  It was his second, maybe third, throw over 20 yards for the game.  Berrian made no play on it.

He did not lose this game.  In fact, I'm optimistic for him.  He showed poise and an ability to not make dumb mistakes, which is more than we can say about our other 2 QBs.

If Lovie and the team want to see if he's the future, they have to have more aggressive play calling to test his arm.  They never did. I want to see his arm strength and accuracy now.

This site gave Griese a ton of breaks for looking rusty when he hadn't played in a year or so.  You all are done with Orton after 1 game?

by Arbusto on Dec 19, 2007 7:59 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Good Post
I agree on all points.  The only complaint I have is that he lacked accuracy on a lot of passes, but I'm sure he was a little rusty in game situations

by allhailmark on Dec 19, 2007 11:50 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree
This should have been the game where he came out looking great.  I don't buy the whole rusty part.  This guys been throwing a football is whole life.  Has been practicing everyday for 2 years.  It's not like we're talking about Paul Blake here.  Todd Collins had no trouble coming in, off the bench mind you, and carving our defense up.  Orton looked like shit against the worst pass defense in the league.  How can it get better for him?  How's he going to look against a decent pass defense?
GO BEARS!!!!!

Minn pass D
The only reason that Minnesota looks bad against the pass is that they get thrown at so much.  That interior d line makes it almost impossible to run on so teams just have to throw.  Any team that just throws throws throws will get yardage.
