WCG Mock Draft- New England (#28)

#28 - New England - Jon Beason, LB, Miami

From what I've read, this is an easy pick: Jon Beason - LB

I can't find it now, but when I was reviewing the number 24 pick, I went to the Patriots' website and read on their team needs. This is paraphrasing, but it comes from the Pats own website writer: "When I was talking to the coaches coming out of the combine, there was a lot of talk about how much they liked Jon Beason out of Miami. I've neither seen nor heard anything different since."

Well, okay. No one really knows what the Patriots are going to do. Just when you think the team is getting cheap by not extending Branch and franchising Samuel, it goes out and splurges on Stallworth, Thomas and Welker.

If I hadn't seen this on the site, I actually think the Patriots would take a lineman here as there are a number that wouldn't really be a reach. But in reality, they still have a fairly young line and they may just want to wait out another year. I think the versatility of Beason is what appeals most to them. Their linebacking corps is aging, and with four 'backers, you always need to be addressing the position. (This is a good pick from the Bears standpoint as it leaves Lawrence Timmons on the board, who typically rates higher.)

I think these four notes are what get the Pats' interest:

Versatile with experience at all three (SAM, MIKE, WILL) linebacker positions...Has a motor that never stops...Fantastic leader with excellent intangibles...A great special teamer.

Others considered: Ben Grubbs - OG; Joe Staley - OT; Lawrence Timmons - OLB

The Patriots could go different than this...
With Griffin and Beason... but after what I've read, I feel fairly confident that if these two players are available and there isn't someone demonstrably better (Laron Landry, Patrick Willis), they'll take at least one of these guys.

The biggest exception is that they may take Beason at 24 and take a lineman at 28. Hopefully, they won't take a linebacker, because you know the Ravens will, and I could be fairly happy with either Beason or Willis.
