Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Draft rumor

Re: Miami Trade down with Chicago, who moves up to six with a Lance Briggs deal, and take Brady Quinn. This is a very hot rumor running around the league and, in fact, league sources even say the two teams have had some minor exploratory talks about such a move.

I don't like it...
for two reasons:

1.) If the team doesn't think Grossman is the present answer at QB, they should be trading for a veteran like Trent Green, not drafting a rookie. This is a team that should be looking to win now, not a year or two down the road.

2.) I don't think Brady Quinn will be that good. He only had success against one quality defense his whole Senior season, and that was against a Penn State secondary comprised entirely of 1st years starters playing in their first game on the road. Additionally, he didn't handle pressure well (part of the reason he suffered against good defenses), and i don't think he'll have any more success than Grossman at the NFL level. If they decide to go for a QB, i'd honestly prefer one of the guys that will be available in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

However...
if they're trading up to get someone else, i would be more in favor of it. In particular, if they can find a way to trade up twice, once into Miami's slot and a second time into the 3-4 range, they'll have a shot at Calvin Johnson. That would make a lot more sense, IMO.

I know I posted it
but I don't get it.

Someone follow the link and tell me are the Dolphins going to draft Brady Quinn or the Bears?

First I thought Bears, but then why the hell is listed under Miami?

And I don't get the rumored trade.

Is it Briggs for the 6th spot and then a trade down to the 9 spot for the Bears to take Quinn at #9 or for the Dolphins to take Quinn at #6?

so confused....

off-day baseball does that to me.

Once again...
I make my trade proposal:

Bears get Larry Johnson
Chiefs get Skins' #6 and Bears #37
Skins get Lance Briggs.

If we're trading for a RB...
why not try to get Turner, who just re-signed with the Chargers? He'd come cheaper, and doesn't have the mileage on him that LJ does.

by Shawn Domagal-Goldman on Apr 26, 2007 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

that doesn't make sense
the skins won't trade their 6 for briggs straight up, and there is no way the bears would tie up that much money in running backs. lj wants a contract larger than LT got, thats why the chiefs want to trade him. the Bears can't pay two running backs that much to split carries.

if the skins were willing to trade their 6 for briggs, briggs would be a skin by now and we'd all be talking about how we could get out of picking 6th.

Re-read...
I said we would ship Benson to the Chiefs.

DAMMIT!!!!!!
I'M A FREAKING MORON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALL APOLOGIES!!!!!!

SORRY!!!

THEY WOULD ALSO GET BENSON.

I AM A TOTAL ASS!!!!!!!

you're not an ass
but i'm not sure i wouldn't rather have benson than LJ at this point. LJ racked up yards last year, but if you watched the chiefs play (and i did, because i drafted lj) he never looked very good, and usually averaged 2 or 3 yards per carry for the first 3 quarters. he's got a ton of mileage and wants a new, humongous contract.

i don't like benson, but i think we might see a different guy this year now that he's "the guy".

LOL...
i do stupid shit like that all the time. I'm not huge correcter, but in this case it seemed warranted.

Beyond warranted...
My post didn't make sense without it.  You didn't just point out a typo.  Thanks for the spot.

I Don't Want LJ
The man doesn't just have mileage; he's almost a sure bet to get hurt next year.  After over 400 carries, he's not going to be the same running back.  Not even close.  If you're really so depsarate for a RB, either try to trade for Turner or the pick for Adrian Peterson, who's injury-prone but tremendously talented with nowhere near the number of carries on his shoulders, knees and ankles.  Personally, I think we should try to snag a RB in a later round, but I would be very disappointed to trade more than a second-day pick for Larry Johnson.

this trade
was misreported, i think on rotoworld. i believe the gyst of the trade is that the bears would make the trade with washington for the 6th pick, then trade that pick to miami for the 9th pick, plus something else. miami would be moving up to 6 to take quinn, and the bears would take whoever was available at 9 (levi brown, okoye, landry, etc).

i could be wrong on this, but the trade as written doesn't make sense.

by tomas21 on Apr 26, 2007 8:29 PM CDT reply actions

makes more sense
though unless the bears feel really strongly about someone in this draft, i don't see a point to having the #9 pick - pretty decent amount of guaranteed money. trading briggs makes sense if we end up w/ a few picks, one of which is a mid-to-late first rounder. otherwise, we're better off signing him than paying a similar amount of money to an unproven top 10 pick.

by guy incognito on Apr 26, 2007 9:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, that does make more sense...
the question then becomes what else would be sent our way... the Dolphins 3rd round pick is the 7th in that round (71st overall) and would come close to the difference in value between the 6th and 9th overall selections. I could see the trade being the 9th, 71st, and 181st overall selections for the 6th overall selection.

Thus, the Bears would be getting the 9th, 71st, and 181st picks for Briggs AND the 31st? I don't think i do this if i'm the Bears. The only way i deal him is for the 6th pick, straight-up and like you said, that's not likely.

by Shawn Domagal-Goldman on Apr 26, 2007 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions

even then
if calvin johnson is off the board by then i woud be trading down.

by mike b on Apr 27, 2007 8:16 AM CDT up reply actions

LJ is kind of a pussy
to be honest.

not interested...

really hope the Bears are targeting a running back in the first 3 rounds, don't have much faith in Benson/Peterson to be healthy and effective.

What about this?
Briggs and the Bears' 1st round pick for Turner and the Chargers' 1st round pick.

by Shawn Domagal-Goldman on Apr 27, 2007 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions

no thank you
All Pro linebacker and the 31st pick for a backup running back and the 30th?  I say pass.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Apr 27, 2007 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Whatever happened to the Briggs
to the Broncos for the 21st?  That is far and away the best idea (for both teams) I have heard.

by Santos Sorrow on Apr 27, 2007 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

According to mlive.com
which is the website for a Detroit paper Denver has moved up to the 10 spot to take the more talented Patrick Willis.
