Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Bears Waive Johnson

Disregard the dirty sound of that title and just focus on the story.  Today the Bears did something the Titans have not been able to do, cut loose a bad headache.  The Bears have waived troubled defensive tackle Tank Johnson.

Johnson was picked up for being almost drunk just a week after getting out of jail and promising to become Man of the Year.

"We are upset and embarrassed by Tank's actions last week," said general manager Jerry Angelo. "He compromised the credibility of our organization. We made it clear to him that he had no room for error. Our goal was to help someone through a difficult period in his life, but the effort needs to come from both sides. It didn't, and we have decided to move on."
The bigger issue for the Bears is depth.  The Bears were planning to be without him for 6 games, but they did plan to get him back.  They will need to start finding a more permanent replacement if free agent pickup Anthony Adams is not the answer.

I wish the headline were,
"Bears cut Tank Johnson; Continue "Championship Is Not That Important" Campaign

it's the right move
sucks to lose the talent but teams need to deliver some level of accountability.  The Leonard Littles of the world do not need to be rewarded for reckless and destructive behavior.
hopefully Tank gets his act together before he ruins a golden opportunity.

Angelo and Lovie
made their bed when they kept him. I would have released him after his gun raid issue. They decided to keep him with no Plan B. They made the commitment to stand by their man and they owed it to us and the players to keep him because right now our DT's suck.

Too bad
Yup, the Bears did the right thing.  I'm all for second chances (don't make me actually count Tank's chances!!) but when you show that you are not interested in cleaning up your act, you can move on down the road.  Cincinnati will put up with you, head on out.

That Angelo quote is joke
Apparently in his world view its OK to have a weapons depot in hand reach of your toddler children, but my god a DUI is the end of the world.

He wasn't going to play
for half the season or close to it.

We have 12 defensive lineman according to bears.com. I'm not sure what the norm is for a roster but that seems like plenty since only 4 at a time generally play.

Yes, but the
plan was to have him back, so we didn't need a permanent replacement.  Now we do.

Okay
it's just not that dire of a situation as people are making it.

http://www.kffl.com/static/nfl/features/freeagents/fa.php?option=DL&y=2007

if that list is current, a bunch of possibilities:

Courtney Brown
Anthony Bryant
Jason Fisk
Tyoka Jackson
Lance Johnstone
Marcellus Wiley
Dan Wilkinson

I'm sure there's a few more possibilities and it wouldn't surprise me if the Bears just wait until some guys get cut during pre-season.

Maybe we could get him with a chip on his shoulder.  After being one of the biggest busts in NFL history, maybe he feels he'll have something to prove.

i think...
he kind of went through the "something to prove" thing with denver last year and it didn't work out all that well. he wasn't horrible or anything, but he wasn't great either.
