Bears Defeat the 49ers 31-28

The Bears improved their post season record to 3-0 with 31-28 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

I won't be able to see the whole game until Monday night, but number wise it looks like Rex had a decent game. He went 13/20 for 211 and 2TDs. He did have an INT that was returned for a TD by former Bear Walt Harris and also had a fumble.

Cedric Benson finally got into the endzone despite not looking anything above average for the third straight game averaging 1.7 yards. Garrett Wolfe looked better rushing for 41 yards averaging 3.2 yards.

On the receiver side Berrian put up some good numbers with 3 receptions for 79 yards and a TD. Olsen and Clark both had 2 receptions for 32 and 39 yards respectively.

Devin Hester briefly scared the beejeezus out of Bears fans when he left the game with a shoulder injury, but returned to the sidelines later with no noticeable problems.

Preseason record is 3-0

I don't think the 49ers were playing any sort of passing defense. They did however take away the run, which has made it hard on Benson.

This might be what teams do this year. Stop the run and make Rex beat them.

Cedric/Rex

I am a Bears fan living in St. Louis so I can't/don't keep up on everything on a day to day basis. WCG is my main source of news.

From what I have seen it appears that our biggest worries are Cedric Benson and Rex Grossman. I am not confident about Rex this year mainly because of what he has shown in the preseason. Way to many mistakes in a short amount of time. My question is what are people's thoughts on Benson? Are we seeing a player that may not start strong, but will be a good second half player? Does he have the strength to be better as the game goes on and wear down defenses? Maybe the previous commentor was correct. Teams may really key in on the running game and make Rex beat them

what were seeing

is a couple of preseason games. since when has preseason gave you a good idea about what the season is going to be like. benson is starting slow just like our running game did last year in preseason.

I am not going to worry

about Benson until the season starts and I see what he can do in a full game.

I have not seen the repay of this game, but with an average of 1 yard per and he had some 6 and 7 yard gains it means he also had some no gains or behind the line runs. I guy his size and with his power shouldn't have too many of those.

Negative carries are almost NEVER the fault of the running back.

Little mention has been made about how the offensive line has been struggling to open up holes for Benson.

I was wondering about that...

...no one has talked about the O-line. I live in NE, and don't have cable, so I haven't seen a game yet. And maybe it takes a more astute eye than average to evaluate an offensive line. But they are getting older, I guess that's one thing for sure. I'd like someone with knowledge to talk about them.

That won't happen...

as Olin Kreutz is only talked about in passing as a great center then they go on with their lives.

Want to know a fun fact? We led the league in 1st down penalties last season. Pretty much the whole line had 4 or 5 false starts last season. I can't remember which site I came across false start stats, but I'm pretty sure that's right. Someone had 6, I'm thinking Tait.

A false start, to me, is eqivalent to a QBs botched snap. A "fundamentals" issue you can have maybe twice or three times a season. Which is why I think the focus being put on it the past few weeks is somewhat warranted, but there's still a bit too much resolution on that microscope if you ask me (i.e. it's worth a mention, but not a scolding hot poker in the ass).

Another thing about our O-line, I'm not sure I can remember that many plays where we have lineman running down field past 4 or 5 yards to block anyone. If you watch film of Walter running you'll see all kinds of lineman following the play 20+ yards downfield. Hmmm, I guess that's because we didn't have that many running plays that went that far last season...I think only 6, maybe a few more if AP broke one that long. That's pretty sad. I guess that whole paragraph is a moot point. Oh well.

Back to the topic, you'll never see ESPN mention the offensive line of the Bears because Rex Grossman is a far more compelling story. So was Tank last season. Now Briggs. The offensive line is just plain not glamorous, not sexy enough for ESPN anyway...

the chicago shows have been all over the line, and i thought there was some talk here about that, maye a different blog. Benson had something like 6 stops at or behind the line. hard for a running back to do much with that. he looked good when he had lanes.
