The Brian Griese Era Begins....

Well...sorta.  It is more like an experiment. The Bears will enter into this Sunday's game versus Detroit with a new man at the helm, journeyman Brian Griese.

Not many believe he can be the answer for the Bears sputtering offense, but perhaps he can avoid some of the errors Rex Grossman has made and perhaps the offense will be more behind him.  The hope is he will be a decent enough band aid to get us back in the hunt and hold down the ship until our next future ex-franchise QB can be found.

As you can see Griese's numbers are not spectacular, with exception of his 2000 season, but they are better than Rex Grossman's and that is probably all the coaches are looking for.

Brian Griese Career Numbers
YEAR TEAM G CMP ATT PCT YDS AVG TD LNG INT RAT
1998 DEN 1 1 3 33.3 2 0.7 0 2 1 2.8
1999 DEN 14 261 452 57.7 3032 6.7 14 88 14 75.6
2000 DEN 10 216 336 64.3 2688 8.0 19 61 4 102.9
2001 DEN 15 275 451 61.0 2827 6.3 23 65 19 78.5
2002 DEN 13 291 436 66.7 3214 7.4 15 82 15 85.6
2003 MIA 5 74 130 56.9 813 6.3 5 80 6 69.2
2004 TAM 11 233 336 69.3 2632 7.8 20 68 12 97.5
2005 TAM 6 112 174 64.4 1136 6.5 7 80 7 79.6
2006 CHI 6 18 32 56.3 220 6.9 1 75 2 62.0
Career 81 1481 2350 63.0 16564 7.0 104 88 80 84.5

Griese comes in at the worst possible time.  The offense is broke and the defense is completely banged up, but with the chance to get in the game again, I doubt he minds.

Here is to hoping.

if griese does stumble
who takes over? grossman or orton? i'm really curious who is annointed #2 QB. i highly doubt its possible, but i'm curious if the bears think taking grossman out of the limelight for a while will help him. when he first came up, he stepped into the pocket, avoided the rush, attacked defenses, and made relatively good judgements. but ever since the injuries and the constant scrutiny, he has not been the same player. the chargers did this w/ drew brees and doug flutie a few years ago, and it seemed to have done the trick. also, griese isn't peyton manning, but he has been pretty good throughout his career. our offense theoretically has lots of weapons, so i expect he'll play quite well.

Grossman is #2
Lovie stated that Grossman will be #2 while Orton stays at #3.

I'm not this says a lot about the coaching staff's confidence in Kyle Orton.

I still don't know about that
they have had high praise.

It could mean he still needs another year.

It could also just a way to hope not to crush Grossman by making him third string.  They still might have to go to him sometime this year.

ortons just bad
he doesnt look off defenders n although he has a good arm he really has a long windup when he throw.
remember orton once threw 5 interceptions in a game something not even rex was bad enough to do...

But...
Orton was also playing as a Rookie something Rex never really did. Orton won't see the field this season, but I don't think the coaches would be afraid of letting him openly compete for the job next year with Griese.
They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. *That's* the *Chicago* way!

I don't think the Bears
need much more than to have somoeone who is a little better than Grossman. Any improvement at all and you guys are 2-1 at a minimum. Plus, once the defense and O-line believe that the QB isn't going to throw the game away, they'll play that much better. Confidence is a big deal.

Wouldn't be nice to have a really good QB?
Or at least some hope of developing one?

....We could have had Brady Quinn........

Stop...
... you have no idea if the Bears could have had Quinn.  And doesn't make it any more true by continuing to repeat it over and over and over and over again.

Further... you don't know that Brady Quinn will ever be a "really good QB."

you should have kept Jeff Blake...

Brian Griese
I have been a Chicago Bears fan since the early 70's, and while I agree that the offence is in dire straights right now, beginning at the QB position.  Isn't benching Rex Grossman for the likes of Brian Griese like jumping from the frying pan into the fire?  Furthermore while watching him prowl the side lines during Sundays debacle aginst Dallas, he looked like his name should have been Brian Greasy instead of Griese.  As for Kyle Orton, well.....maybe there is an opening on the cheerleader squad.

There is nothing initially wrong
with Griese. His numbers are better, so maybe he can get things moving in the right direction.   The two big problems are, he isn't a home run hitter, so once he gets us to the playoffs is he going to be able to do anything?  Also, it means we are back to the drawing board as far as our franchise QB.

Even if we were to get McNabb after this year, we have to start looking for the guy who will eventually replace him.
