Angelo Speaks

Bears GM Jerry Angelo took to the mic today to discuss various topics including the plan for 2008.

ON REX GROSSMAN:

"We would like to have Rex back. Rex showed some good play, particularly when he was coming back off his little sabbatical. We'd like to have as much competition as we can there."

Would Grossman return as the starter?

"In all likelihood, without sitting and talking with the coaches, off the top of my head, it's got to be competition," Angelo said. "Somebody's got to be first in line, obviously. But that will be determined in the off-season."

ON CEDRIC BENSON

"Franchise is a strong word," Angelo said. "I'd like to think he can still be a featured back. But there's going to be competition at that position.

"If something were to arise and there's a good back in the marketplace or in the draft that we feel can complement the backs or give us the kind of competition that we feel [is needed], then we're going to look at that as well.

"[Benson] started to turn the corner. Unfortunately he got an injury, and we didn't see what we needed to see, or what we feel we're going to see with him."

Angelo said his definition of a featured back is one who can break off multiple 20-yard runs in a game.

ON RETURNING COACHING STAFF

"He's got to feel comfortable with the people that he works with every day," Angelo said. "And that's obviously Lovie's call. He feels real good about his staff. ... We feel the problems that we have can be corrected. We have made changes on our staff before. If that were what he felt was in our best interest, I'm sure he would have done it."

ON BRIGGS, BERRIAN, AYANBADEJO AND GROSSMAN

Angelo said he would like to keep free agents such as Lance Briggs, Bernard Berrian, Brendon Ayanbadejo and Grossman. He didn't rule out using the franchise tag on Berrian but the price tag for Briggs might be too costly.

"If we don't [get those players back], then we have others players that will take their place," Angelo said.

ON MIKE BROWN

"How am I'm going to count on Mike Brown? Mike's been hurt a lot. We certainly would like to have Mike on our football team, but we're just going to wait. He's several months away from being back and healthy again."

multiple?
"Angelo said his definition of a featured back is one who can break off multiple 20-yard runs in a game."

who does that besides LT and Purple Jesus?  To me a franchise back is one who can break off multiple 20-yard runs a game.

ha...
... I was thinking the exact same thing as I read that.

There isn't one back in the NFL who even had 16 20+ yard runs this year (i.e. one per game).  LT led the league with 13.

Now... I believe what Angelo means is that he wants a back who is a threat to break multiple 20+ yard games.  But I don't even know if LT would be a threat to do that with the Bears' offensive line.

by big_lowitzki on Jan 3, 2008 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

LT could run without an oline
ok maybe not.

But really, how many guys can you count in the nfl that are even threats to do that?  maybe 4?  I would consider a feature back as one who you can rely on to carry the ball 20 or more times a game, won't fumble, stays healthy and can garner you @4 yards a carry.

While I think Benson can be that guy, he hasn't shown it yet.

Angelo
What he's doing is lowering the bar for Benson. No longer the franchise back now he's a feature back. Jerry is lowering expectations for us. He isn't what he was drafted to be.

Via Football Futures
Top 5 Unrestricted Free Agents:
  1. Michael Turner
  2. Jamal Lewis
  3. Julius Jones
  4. Justin Fargas
  5. Chris Brown
Restricted Free Agents: Barber and Derrick Ward

Top QB's

  1. Derrek Anderson (Restricted)
  2. Rex
  3. Daunte Culpepper
  4. Josh McGown
  5. Quinn Gray
  6. Cleo Lemon
Yeah, bringing Rex back looks better and better.

WR's

  1. Randy Moss (Is that right?)
  2. Berrian
  3. Bryant Johnson
  4. Andre Davis
  5. Drew Carter
O-Line
  1. Alan Faneca (LG)
  2. Flozell Adams (LT)
  3. Jordan Gross (RT)
  4. Max Starks (RT)
  5. Floyd Womack (LG)
  6. Jake Scott  (RG)
  7. Travelle Wharton (LT
Offseason plan on offense?

I would say try and sign Faneca and resign Rex and Berrian would be the top 3. Try to get in on Turner with Fargas as a possibility.

O-line, O-line, O-line, O-line
Chant it with me folks. No. 1 priority.

This franchise sucks. Can I have Marc Colombo and Chris Harris back please? If they go into next season and still have Orton, Grossman and Griese, I'm going to fucking freak. At that point, the only chance this franchise has before 2010 will be Orton being a Top-10 QB.

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

might I remind you
this also the franchise that drafted nathan vasher peanut tillman lance briggs and devin hester, marc colombo was hurt almost his entire time here and chris harris sucked when he was here he was always whiffing, big time.

You can remind me all you want.
I know that Angelo has gotten lucky. I also know he's been stupid. When has Angelo drafted a reach and it turned out? All he's done is get guys where they were supposed to go and they turned out good. And some of have turned out bad. Big whoop.

Reach
Didn't most people think that Hester was a major reach?

by big_lowitzki on Jan 4, 2008 10:13 AM CST up reply actions

Reach? Yeah.
Major? Maybe, but I know I didn't personally think it was a huge reach at the time. But yeah, that's a good one, obviously. I will say, however, that it was taken out of need (remember Bobby Wade?) so they took the best returner no the board and he wasn't going to last to their next pick.

mark anderson was considered a reach
his rookie season turned out to be pretty good. i wasn't an advocate of him being a full time starter, i think his value will come from spelling ogun and brown as a speed rusher on pass downs.

Tenn's GM at the time
said publicly that he was going to take Hester before the Bears, but his coach talked him into another player, so Hester might not have been a huge reach if other GMs were looking.

Late fifth-round picks can't be reaches.
It's a lot of luck at that point and/or drafting players by "team style" or whatever.

Orton-Berrian-McFadden?
Let Grossman go. Draft a complimentary back for Benson (is there any way they land McFadden?), and give Orton the QB position. If the Bears are handing out concillatory "one more season to prove something" chances, then Orton deserves it the most.

by OrtonsBeard on Jan 3, 2008 5:47 PM CST reply actions

Top 3
McFadden is almost assured to go in the top 3 picks.  The Bears don't have a chance unless they pull out a crazy trade, which I would be completely shocked to see happen.

OH ya
Orton has proved it. Beyond a doubt.  Without question.  Thank you for your awesome insight.  Please grace us with your clairvoyance much more often.

Michael Turner or Rashard Mendenhall as opposed to McFadden.

What is WCG by the way?

WindyCityGridiron. The SB Nation Bears Blog that is riddled with idiots from The Cubs Reporter and BleedCubbieBlue. I go there to talk shit. And to find out stuff that I'm too lazy to do on my own.

That shit is funny, funny, funny!  I'll try harder to be like your hilarious ass next time, promise. (hat tip to Chad back in September for the original catch).
