Bears News and Notes - 10/08/08

*** Article talking about the problems last year replacing injured stars and the differences with guys like Idonije, Graham and Marcus Harrison.

But this year's group may be better equipped to handle the inevitable injuries that occur each season.

"That's why we talk about playing as many players as we can throughout," head coach Lovie Smith said, "not just when we have injuries, where we have to [play them]."

*** Bears break top 10 in power poll

10. Chicago Bears (3-2). Kyle Orton for MVP? It doesn’t sound too crazy if he keeps getting better, because with their running game, defense and special teams, quarterback was the missing piece. A more realistic award campaign: Lance Briggs for defensive player of the year.

*** How about another?

ESPN

10 (18) - You can't fight it right now: The Bears are the best team in the NFC North. Kyle Orton is no mere game manager, either. (KS)
*** Tommie Harris is expected to play.

*** Bears find the right balance.

*** A look at the 2006 draftees.

Power rankings

don’t mean much to me, but I do like seeing the Bears get some credit for their recent play. I’m wondering when you all think Devin will break a Kick Off or Punt Return this year. Hearing about Reggie Bush and his 2 run backs just got me thinking. I appreciate your thoughts on this matter.

It will happen

but teams really focus on him now, so it will get harder to do so.

I'm wondering

If his lack of big kick returns will have kickers actually kick to him and give him a shot.

Minny's coverage was awful

I think if they kick or punt to him then he’ll return one for a TD. Hopefully they didn’t learn from Monday night.

The spike in the rankings

is a result of everyone recognizing the quality of opponents we faced. Carolina and Tampa are considered good teams and losing to them in close games (even though we should’ve won) is not a huge knock on us. Beating Philly and Indy are very good wins. We blew out Detroit like we should. The next big test is Atlanta on the road.

Atlanta lost to Carolina and Tampa like we did and also beat Detroit. The beat a bad KC team but also went into Lambeau and beat the Pack. They are undefeated at home. They are 8th in offense (2nd rush, 25th pass). Our defense is 8th overall (4th rush, 23rd pass). Strength versus strength here. We must stop Turner. Ryan has been efficient but has yet to throw for 200yds in a game. Our defense will stack the line and make Ryan throw. Roddy White needs to be shut down.

On the other side of the ball, Atlanta is 23rd in defense (21st rush, 22nd pass). Chicago is 12th in offense (9th rush, 16th pass). We have an advantage here. If the offense plays mistake-free ball, I have little doubt that we can move the ball and score some points.

A win against a better than expected Atlanta team on the road, will solidify our ranking in the top ten.

Yeah....someone musta been high

I’m an Orton supporter but there’s no way. OTOH, I could get behind the Briggs campaign.

Crazy talk?

Let’s all stop rubbing against his thigh and back up a tad.

MVP?

Perhaps a bit much, but look at the schedule – even with the bye he can make a run at NFC Offensive player of the month if the keep rolling in Atlanta.

I’m waiting for him to be pressed a bit more. He doesn’t seem to be as on the run as much as Grossman has been, and I’m thinking it might have something to do with the fact that rattling Grossman was the way to get to him and no one has yet established where Orton’s holes are, especially now that they’re taking the wraps off him and we’re seeing game from him we haven’t before. How he reacts when they catch up to him will be major.

But so far, so good.

Besides the obvious - Go Irish.

Z. He doesn't need an exclamation point. He is one.

Where's the Haterade now?

A lot of the Orton skeptics have got to admit that Orton is definitely improving each game. MVP? No, not by any stretch right now, but if he continues to improve, who knows? He could be one of the good, no great QBs in the league.

That's for sure

Haven’t seen a ton of Rexy supporters on here lately, but I know they’re here. I like Orton, but I want to see him continually do well.

By the way, congrats on Ball State crackin the top 25.

i was a rex supporter

still think he got a bad rap in chicago…gross overreaction from supporters and haters alike…but as long as orton keeps coming into his own the way he has, i will certainly get over rex.

I'm an Orton guy, but I agree with the Rex bit

He got a horrible chance in Chicago.

Rexless

He got ample enough time to figure out how to play the right way. Too bad he couldn’t see over the line, step up in the pocket, or hold on to the ball.

ugh

hate that argument. he had no problem stepping up when he was playing good and people were anointing him the next brett favre, but when he had a bad game he was suddenly 5’10 instead of 6’2.

i’m just saying, there was gross over-reaction by both supporters and opposers alike, and i think it is safe to say (barring any injury, knock HARD on wood) that the Rex era has ended in Chicago and he will be looking for a new home next spring.

I don't think so

What games were you watching? Rarely did he step up in the pocket when it colapsed, nor did he show good pocket awareness. Remember that game last year when he tried to allude the rush by stepping outside, only to trip over a blade of grass? The only good play he made with his feet was against the Seahawks, but he fumbled the ball in the final minutes of the game. The guy has zero athletic ability, plus he can’t check off his primary receivers very often at all.

Thanks, it's a big deal to us here

Been a long time coming and hopefully some of our good players will finally be getting the recognition and attention they deserve (namely, Nate Davis).

Power Rankings

I think they are fairly accurate. 10 seems pretty high but honestly, as we all know, this team is a play or two away from being 5-0. I hope they realize that the division is theirs to lose, and that we can stay atop the NFC North. I don’t know how we will fare against other NFC opponents (if we do make it to the playoffs) — The Giants, Redskins, & Cowboys are all contendors, and the Panthers are really coming on, even though we had them a few weeks ago and let it slip away. The league is wide-open this year, it’s going to be an exciting remainder of the season.

I'm happy to see Orton playing well

but I’m gonna wait a bit before I get too excited about him.

Mark your calendar

Kevin Seifert wrote something about the Bears!

Did anyone catch how he did a “Look at the Division, One Quarter Through the Season” and he didn’t even mention the Bears?
