Kyle Orton Wants To Play?

We've been given the 3-4 weeks estimate for Orton being out, but then info came out that he had no torn ligaments and not even a high ankle sprain, but we were not given a new time frame for his retrun.  In an interview with Devin Hester, he let out that Orton is feeling much better and might push to start this week versus the Titans.

Hester On Orton: "He's Trying to Come Back This Week" (via mouthpiecesports1)

I don't know how well Orton is or feels, but I'd like to think they would just sit him this week and get him ready for the Packers in two weeks.

Even if Rex does poorly in the Titans game, no way do I want to see Orton back under center. Let the man heal, despite the temptation to let him play. The GB game is far more important – the Bear’s current NFC record is not great, they need all the wins against division opponents that they can get at this point.

the point

i think is that he may not be hurt. he walked out of there sunday and there hasn’t been status since the negative mri.

If he has no injury I'm all for him playing

but don’t rush him if he does need the time.

I'm all for him sitting against the Titans

but if it’s only a sprained ankle and he can be near 100% for the Packers game, I wanna see him out there.

I think the Titans game

needs to be managed, more than anything else. Even if Kyle was 100% and the injury had never happened, I think the gameplan would still be a bit more conservative because of how freakishly good their defense is. Their secondary is awesome- we probably wouldn’t be gunslinging.

They bring the pressure, and I really wouldn’t want to see Kyle hobbling around out there at all trying to get past Albert Haynesworth…Even if he thinks he is good enough to go…

Just sayin’…

As a Titans fan

I must admit I’d much rather see Sexy Rexy out there. Unless Kyle Orton is in fact injured.

If he is able to play I say play him.

I understand the game against Green Bay is very important, but I don’t see how the Bears win this game without Orton. This is the type of game a team can rally around and feed off of. The way I see it the Bears match up pretty well with Tennessee. Their best offensive weapons are their running backs. If our defense does anything well it’s stopping the run. They have a good, if not great, defensive line and we finally have a quartereback that knows how to properly read defenses and take advantage of the other team’s mistakes, let alone stand tall in the face of pressure. As mean as it sounds, Rex is simply a mental midget. I think if Rex plays he gets slaughtered, and the same would go for the team. If Rex plays on Sunday we got no chance, but who knows, the Bears have proven me wrong plenty of times the last few years.

Orton (ankle sprain) hopes to play vs. Titans
“I’m certainly not ruling out anything,” Orton said Wednesday. “I don’t know exactly what the timetable’s going to be, but I just feel if I keep on making improvement, I certainly can’t rule out this week.”

Too Many Games

For the rest of the year will be “big games”. Orton and Rexy are both incapable of CONSISTANTLY stepping up in big games. While it is nice to see confidence from fans this year in Orton, I have to believe that this is a “mirage year” for him. We have too much inconsistancy on both sides of the ball, and in our coaching ranks, to expect more than an entry into this year’s playoffs. If injuries hadn’t delepted so many strong NFC teams, we would not be nearly as competitive as we are right now… so let’s not forget about developing Hanie, and keeping our eye on free agency and the draft. Green Bay will be crazy-dangerous for the next few years, and I really don’t think that we have the talent right now to compete with them. Sidenote: I still think the Titans are over-rated this year.

Exactly right
We have too much inconsistancy on both sides of the ball, and in our coaching ranks, to expect more than an entry into this year’s playoffs.

Orton has still looked good with a bad OL and a glued-together group of WR’s and without a defense that will bail him out (like Grossman had in ’06).

Injuries on NFC teams?

Like, the Bears secondary?

Are you serious? What team did we beat that didn’t have a weapon they needed? Lions, Lions, Eagles, Vikings, Colts. You only have 3 choices since the Colts are in the AFC.

I agree that the Titans are overrated though. They’ve played crappy teams…and been very fortunate with the ball falling their way. The story in the game will be turnovers. Period.

by mikebdot on Nov 6, 2008 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

My comment on injuries

To NFC teams wasn’t referring to teams we have played. If you look at the talent of the NFC, pre-injuries, you have teams like the Cowboys, Seahawks, Saints, Redskins, etc. that would have been much more competitive had the injury bug not bitten them. Now, can we hang with those guys had they been healthy? Not this year, even with Orton showing flashes of consistancy. We have been bitten as well, but we just don’t have the talent yet to compete for real in the NFC.

And yes, turnovers for sure will be a big factor… as well as Time of Possession (huge) and Special Teams. As cliche as that sounds for most teams, it is especially true for us.

That's a whole lot of woulda, coulda, shoulda.

Every team has to deal with injuries throughout the season. It’s never a good excuse for teams to say we would’ve won if only he had played. Any given Sunday….

GeaxBears- you never know if it’s a mirage year or not, but most analysts say he’s playing like he’s the real deal. His knock against him was his accuracy, well that’s definitely not an issue this year.

You know what?

Orton is playing like a very average QB right now. And compared to what I’ve seen over the course of my lifetime watching the Bears play, I’ll take consistant “average” play from a QB any day. Maybe it’s not a mirage… maybe Neck really is average!

Still haven't responded to my post

He’s looked better with worse than Grossman in ’06.

Honestly, we shouldn't get too crunk right now... period.

Orton has done incredibly well so far this season. It may be a mirage, and maybe not. Yes, Neck has been way more consistant that Sex Train has ever been, and that has paid huge didvidends thus far.

But, I would hate to think that folks are getting so freakin’ excited over decent play from Neck, that they are seeing him as some kind of long-term QB. Hey, I am on the Orton bandwagon just like every other Bears fan right now, but I also will not lose sight of the fact that he is just average. For where we are right now, he is fine… but I want so badly to think we can find someone more long-term… more talented. Get a stud QB in the draft, develop him for a couple of years under Orton, quietly put together an O Line, put firecrackers in our Defensive players’ arses, and come out swinging for the fences in 2 or 3 seasons. Kyle very well may get us into the playoffs this year, but it is dillusional to think he has all of the answers we need as a team.

Your post… fine. Okay, I admit you are right. I never argued with the fact that Orton is doing better than Sex Cannon did a couple of seasons ago.

BIGGER ISSUES: Where in the crap is our defense? Where in the crap is Hester… buried underneath all of that money We need to get that killer instinct back… on all 3 sides of the ball! We seem lethargic, tired, almost bored at times…

Where’s Ditka when we need him to get our shiat motivated to do something??

Better than average

Well, here are Kyle’s rankings in the most important stats for QBs:

4th best in INTs thrown
10th (tied) in TD passes/QB rating
12th in passing yards
17th in completion %

That’s much better than average like you say in previous posts. Plus, if not for an inconsistent WR corp his numbers would be much better. How about the 5 TD passes that were dropped? Orton, by a wide margin, has the least amount of talent around him than any other QB in the top-ten.

QBs played hurt all the time

Look at Big Ben.

If Kyle indeed only has a mild ankle sprain and if he can tolerate the pain.
Then play him.

Lovie needs to show that he has enough confidence in Kyle, that if Kyle says he can go he goes.

That’s how this franchise can show Orton their support.
Look at Pittsburgh letting Big Ben play.
Dallas giving Romo a chance to play.
Indy letting Manning play through his injuries.

If Orton is able to go, he should go.

by Edicus2288i on Nov 5, 2008 2:38 PM CST reply actions

One thing in common

With the teams you listed is their O Lines. We don’t have that protection to be able to afford Kyle the opportunity to play at less than 100. Besides, Ben and Tony have scramble ability (Kyle doesn’t), and Peyton is ultra-human (Kyle ain’t). Of course, with Unpredictableasaurus Rex, maybe Kyle at 80 might be worth looking at. Lovie has shown confidence in everyone, at all times, and that is a fault of his. As much as I like Lovie, he is reminding me more and more of Tom Landry.

Pittsburgh and Dallas's O-Lines Suck

How do you thing Ben and Romo got hurt?

Their O-Lines are disastrous.

Granted Ben and Romo do have the scramble ability, but their O-Lines are just as bad if not worse then ours.

If Kyle can run on his ankle, then he should go.

This is a game we can pull out and win.
I don’t think the Titans are that good, they’re good, but the not the amazing beast everyone thinks they are.
Add to that they have no idea who to gameplan for.

I think we can pull off the upset.

by Edicus2288i on Nov 5, 2008 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

Won't argue about

The offensive lines, even though I could. However, with the Titan’s defense, it really doesn’t matter who we start. They “have no idea who to gameplan for”? Thats kindof funny IMO… are either of those 2 guys dynamic enough to throw off someone’s game prep?

I understand your opinion that if Kyle can go, he should go. He has provided more consistancy than we have seen at QB in quite some time. And just based on a few games this year, he may very well provide us the best chance to win.

I agree, the game is very winnable, but at this point, Kyle’s health is more important than a game against an AFC team right now.

Bears in 2012!

Completely ironic on two points.

1. Kyle got hurt while SCRAMBLING. LOL! And he ran for a TD earlier in the game.

2. Big Ben has been sacked 26 time this year already. Only Cassel (28) and O’Sullivan (32) have been sacked more. Orton’s been sacked 15 times.

I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

start Rex have Orton ready on sidelines

i much rather see this team win without Kyle Orton then to risk his health even more. Its more important for the Bears to prove they can win without Orton than it is to prove that Orton can play through an injury. Defense and run game seems to play more determined when Orton is not in, maybe because they know its really on them to win it without him. I’d like to see them tested without Orton, besides you can always have Orton on the sidelines hungry to get in if Rex n Effex causes a hex. Go Defense! Go Forte! Bad Rex stay home.

by Oso Monstar of Midway on Nov 5, 2008 4:21 PM CST reply actions

No, but Orton has proved that he can make adjustments far better than Grossman ever could – Orton also actually looks to his 2nd and 3rd options at receiver, another little talent that eludes Rex. Watching Rex stare down his intended target will always be an exercise in frustration, I don’t think he’s ever looked off a receiver once. Why else would the Bears always use the play – action to free him up on passing plays? If they try to establish the run (as GB did, and it eventually paid dividends) , then I’d expect lots of play action with Grossman – you don’t need to do that with Orton.

by Waylon on Nov 5, 2008 4:59 PM CST reply actions

orton is in for a real surpise

the first time he tries to plant that ankle and make a move, high ankle sprains are vicious. they feel fine when you are walking around, but the minute you try to plant and run you’ll end up in a heap on the ground and there is no tape job you can do to help it like a low ankle sprain.

i think grossman starts for 2 weeks, how well he is playing will depend on how much time we can afford to give orton off.

by lopey986 on Nov 6, 2008 1:26 AM CST reply actions

But they're reports saying

that it’s not even a high ankle sprain.

That it’s just a regular ankle sprain.

by Edicus2288i on Nov 6, 2008 2:29 AM CST up reply actions

And surely

If Orton plays, he will already have gone through the plants and cuts during practice…

well

he most likely won’t practice at all, most guys don’t when they have any kind of injury. this worries me even more, quarterback is the hardest position to play in the nfl and to play without practicing all week is tough for a guy like brady/manning let alone a guy like orton.
