Should we court Hall?

As it is being widely reported, the Oakland Raiders have cut DeAngelo Hall and are just awaiting a press conference to make it official.

With the ravaging our DBs have taken (Bowman and McGowan on IR, Tillman, Vasher, and Manning all missing time), is it worth pursuing Hall?  He's got talent and he would require us to pay him much, but what kind of locker room presence would he be and can he operate well in a Cover-2 based scheme?

Given how often we seem to be wondering if we have enough healthy corners to run a nickel package, it might be worth looking into, if expectations are set properly by both parties.

No Way, No How

He is the token “locker room cancer” that so many teams have… and the Bears definately don’t need any more distractions within the organization than they already have now. While it would be advantageous to add a “superstar” to any roster, we aren’t gelling consistantly enough right now as a team, especially defensively, to add a potentially volitile player. The Raiders are a perfect example of having tons of terrible players and tons of superstars, without enough of a solid foundation in between. Signing a player like Hall right now would be a step in that very direction for the Bears.

locker room cancer?

what has this guy done that has caused problems for his team? i have never really heard of any type of off the field problems and all the reactions out of oakland seem to be pretty negative towards the front office because they all seemed to love hall as a teammate.

Maybe so, everyone loved Briggs during his contract-a-thon

Doesn’t mean he was a huge pain to the front office and fan’s hopes.

Hall is cocky and at times runs his mouth without thinking (think Moose). We don’t need that around here.

Hard to trust players' judgement in Oakland

A volitile player in the Oakland Raiders locker room would be Totally different than one in the Bears locker room. Morale is down, way down in Oakland, and it has been for quite a while. The players’ angst and frustration is getting focused on upper management, and not a lot of accountablility for the players is going on. Listening to Sapp even while he was still there, he said the locker room was like a funeral home… lots of arguing and biatching. Maybe Hall’s presence in Oakland isn’t noticible, but put him in our locker room… and you would see the difference.

I was waiting for this post

I knew it would be a matter of time. All the reasons stated above are very valid to not take him. I’ll also add we already have 2 high priced corners. Also, Vasher had 2 good seasons and got the big deal and is now struggling. If this guy is already struggling, albeit in a man to man system as opposed to the zone he was successful, I’m not sure if it is worth the money. He’ll be looking for a big pay day in the neighborhood of what he already received. I think he would be perfect for the Lions. Oh wait, that already got rid of the old GM. I don’t know where he’ll go then.

I bet Millen's pissed he got fired

because if Javon Walker was cut too, it’s his favorite wet dream.

It's always fun

To see how we could spend someone else’s money! lol. It is something that probably comes up with the Bears a little more than most teams… every time a half-sexy player hits the market: should we sign them?

That is unfortunately due to constantly having strong needs in key positions, and constantly seeing our management turn up their noses. JA takes pride in his draft, and you could argue either way his effectiveness, and doesn’t hardly bat an eye at most free agents. Sometimes, it’s frustrating to see. And it never fails, a hot-shot receiver will hit the market, but no way will we sign him… we got now QB to throw it to him! And no need to sign a hot-shot running back… we got no line to block for him! Too funny sometimes…

Wait and see what anyone else is offering.

Then make a offer just to have a chance at a great player. I think that we have enough good leaders that they would keep him from being too much of a pain.

I'm pretty sure we're out of dough.

Most of what we have is already tied up for this season from what I’ve read and as far as next season, we need to resign Orton for big bucks.

Disagree.

Let Rex have his opportunity. I didn’t say a big offer, just a lure to see if he’d be willing to take a pay cut to play for a team that would give him lots of playing time.

We are not out of dough.

All teams usually keep a small portion for emergencies. But if the Bears wanted Hall and Hall wanted to come here they could figure it out. They could do a 3 year deal with most coming in the last two years.

Hall’s agent has said at least 15 teams have contacted him and are interested, which means the Bears wouldn’t bite even if they wanted to. They don’t do bidding wars.

Besides we have money wrapped up in Tillman and Vasher and the Bears are high on Graham, so Hall isn’t being considered.

At the same time

I’ll trade out either Tillman’s or Vasher’s contracts to Hall as long as he would actually be able to play a full season.

I'M A MAN! I'M 22!

by ChiFan13 on Nov 7, 2008 10:46 AM CST up reply actions

I won't trade Tillman's

I might consider Vahser’s unless he plans on picking it up again. He is hurt a lot and isn’t making the plays he once did.

I think the Bears unlike the Raiders have the voices to keep him in check. Oakland doesn’t have anybody in house to keep a locker room straight. The Bears have Urlacher and Harris and maybe Ogunleye and Briggs who should have the respect of the lockerroom and should be able to handle him.

That said he hasn’t played well the last two years, so you’d have to be careful. Maybe since he wouldn’t be our number one he’d do better.

He's not

what he was when he was in Atlanta. I heard the term fire sale used to describe what the Raiders are up to right about now. I think his play slipping a bit in Oakland will drop his price tag some but I don’t think the bears have the cash to throw at him. As stated before we normally don’t go after the big name FA. Someone yesterday said maybe all Hall needed was to get out of Oakland and he’d be fine like Randy Moss. Hard to say what the problem is with him, he has 3 INT’s this year to his credit but it’s been said he’s been thrown on more than any other corner in the league. We already have enough guys who can get beat in the passing game. We need a pass rush, then the corners will be fine.

If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

he is having a rough time

adapting to the man coverage scheme the raiders run as opposed to what he was used to in zone coverage in atlanta. he should be able to adapt if he is really that good of a corner, but i think he’ll be fine when he gets back into a zone coverage scheme.

by lopey986 on Nov 6, 2008 1:24 PM CST up reply actions

Dont Need Him

If Vasher or Tillman isn’t getting the job done, the better bet is a young, cheap player like Corey Graham. That kid’s a stud. We’re having a hard enough time getting him on the field, so why pay a bunch of money to a guy like Hall?

by Orval Overall on Nov 6, 2008 12:26 PM CST reply actions

No way

do we want hall. Completely overrated, Was constantly toasted in Atlanta. They had the worst yards per completion against in the NFL and he was a big part of that. Everyone remembers a few spectacular INT’s and return runs but they are few and far between. Plus not great in run support and his attitude speaks for itself. Think Ced Benson on defense..

damn

for 490k i’d have signed him…vasher and tillman won’t be 100% all year and hell, we can always use all the depth we can get.
