Better know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Q and A with Big Cat Country

Greetings!

I am Chris, the humbled and depressed blogger for the Jacksonville Jaguars at Big Cat Country.  My lame-duck Jaguars are heading to your neck of the woods for a game this week, and I thought I'd open up a forum for any Jaguars related questions you might have.

One piece of "news", our best cornerback Rashean Mathis is out for this week and will probably be IR'ed.  This means you'll probably have a chance to throw at Will James, whi is awful.

Anyhow, I'll answer anything and everything!

-Chris

Ah, cheer up

You have to remember that you’re playing the Chicago Bears.

1) How will the Jags attempt to stop Matt Forte?

2) How’s Garrard looked lately? Is our terrible secondary in for a long day?

1. I’m wondering the same thing. Simply put, this team was built upon a dominant run defense and that’s gone away. If only you had Grossman lining up under center, then we could just put 10 in the box and not care ;).

2. Garrard is having a career year, but for all the wrong reasons. Our O-line has been decimated by injuries so we have no running game. As for your Secondary, considering Matt Jones is our only WR who understands things like route running and catching, it might be a toss up.

Cold Weather

Jacksonville is a Florida team so i’m wondering how they fair in cold weather/bad weather games?

If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

We went into Pittsburgh twice last year, once in December, and again in the Wild Card round in a snow storm and won

This team is built to play cold weather football, aka run the ball and stop the run. Sadly, as I said in the post above, O-line injuries have pretty much put that to a stop this season. If we get going though, you wouldn’t know we were a team from Florida.

Jack

Is Del Rio’s in jeopardy of losing his job? I believe he’s a good coach; classy, strong-willed, and tough as nails. Do you see any similarities between him and Lovie?

Del Rio's job security will be determined in the next 4 games

If this team comes out and plays like it did Monday Night, then I think the Jaguars will have a implosion kind of offseason and start fresh. If not, and they come out and play hard still, then I think he’s safe. As for between him and Lovie, they’re both old school coach’s built on run the ball and stop the run.

I know the name Rasean Mathis

but wonder how big a loss he is for y’all now that he’s done for the year?

At this point it's almost irrelevant

It will let our free agent flop in Drayton Florence have some starting time. The “bright side” is that we’ll see if Drayton isn’t a complete and total disaster of a pickup, the downside is that Rashean’s about the only guy on the defense having a solid season and losing him just symbolizes the way the Jaguars seem to be packing up and turning the lights out on the season.

Envious Bears Fan. . .

Last year, the Jaguars (This year, it’s the Tennessee Titans) were the embodiment of the principals held by the Chicago Bears: A power running game that left the opposition questioning their manhood; A defense built to dominate in the trenches that forces the opposition to make mistakes; Level-headed, near perfect QB decision making/performance. I watched the Jags (and now the Titans) with envy because they almost perfected the most tried & true formula towards success in the NFL: Run the ball/Stop the run. Can you share with us the philosophy behind Jack DelRio/Jaguars Management’s team building/talent evaluating on both sides of the ball?

That's a good good question.

It used to be a mixture of sensible free agent signing, keeping lots of big guys on both lines, and having a steady stock of “jars on the shelf” for the future. The Jaguars since Del Rio took over focused on building long-term rather than “win now”.

A big part of this is Paul Vance, our numbers guy who manages the cap and keeps the contracts under control.

Now, unfortunately, this offseason saw “the plan” go out the window, the Jaguars spent like crazy on Free-Agent flops (Porter and Florence), sacrificed their draft (no new Jars), and couldn’t get a contract done in time for their one real draft pick (Harvey). Combine that with losing the offensive line in the first week of the season and you’ve got the perfect storm of failure.

Here's a question

What the hell happened to you guys this year? I thought you were the ones who would challenge the Colts, not the Titans.

see my above comment.

I answer your question there.
