Thoughts on possible picks - rounds 1 through 5
- Gosder Cornelius - OT - Boston College (after trading down)
- Devin Thomas WR - Michigan State
- Chilo Rachal - OG - USC
- Keenan Burton - WR - Kentucky
- Josh Johnson - QB - San Diego (pick gained from earlier trade)
- Kevin Smith - RB - UCF
- Frank Morton - DT - Tulane
Some of these players have a high risk/reward factor (especially Josh Johnson), but I think it's likely we could get these players at these spots. And if they pan out, we could actually fill in quite a few holes on the team - with the possibility of pretty exciting young offense in a few seasons' time without needing a lot of moves in free agency.
Note: These picks are based off of the Bears trading their 1st pick to move down in that round, in exchange for a third rounder. Maybe this is unlikely, but having 3 picks is this year's third round would definitely explain how Angelo seems to think he can seriously upgrade this team with one draft. I've seen a few mocks having them take Felix Jones later in the first, so maybe Dallas could be interested in moving up for Mendenhall instead. Dunno, but it's looks pretty obvious Angelo's looking to move down.

Need more info
We move down in the first and only pick up a third? I'd need numbers of who we are trading with.
Not sure I want a receiver in the 2nd either.

Yeah, I agree i was a little ambiguous there ...
So with that, we'd move back either to 22, or the more likely 28 spot where Cherilus would make more sense to be selected and we'd take their 3 (the 92nd pick). The idea that we'd get a 3 for moving down was based on a picks value chart from espn.com, where each draft spot has a points ranking that coaches/scouts apparently use to determine trade values of draft picks. A late first rounder and 3rd round equal roughly a mid first rounder from a quick look at that.
Of course, there's probably a bunch of reasons this all wouldn't work if I looked at it harder, but as it seems Angelo's determined to fill holes almost entirely with the draft, I'm just trying to figure out how that could possibly fit together.
And I hear you on the WR in the second - before this offseason, I wasn't too into the idea of taking a wideout either - but now that we're looking at Lloyd, Booker, Hester, Bradley and maybe Davis (if we don't let him go too) as our receiving corps, I'm definitely more open to the idea. I don't support taking a WR with the first pick at all though. And for a RB, I do like Mendenhall, but I think this offseason left us almost no choice but to go OT with our first pick, so I looked at other options on that.

Gosder Cherilus
combine. In 2007 he was named All SouthWestern Conference for LT and Started Lt for 2 yrs with an 84.9% blocking consistancy rating, with only 2 Sacks allowed in 1,558 snaps and 21 TD blocks.
Cherilus is not a bad prospect but i think JA can drop as he usually does and still pick up this guy. But I'm a bum, What do I know? lol

My only issues....
Also... I want nothing to do with Josh Johnson in the 3rd... especially when you can take the same gamble (effectively) on Dennis Dixon in the 5th or 6th round or make a safer choice at QB in the 3rd with Henne.
