Chad Johnson Wants Out

...and yes it is a slow news day.

Cincinnati Bengals Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson is telling everybody who will listen that he wants out.  He doesn't want a pay raise or a restructure he wants to get the heck up out of there.

There is not way the Bears even look at him, I'd imagine.  Our QB situation is not nearly stable enough to keep him in line and stop future blow ups.

Though it won't happen, is there anybody out there who'd like to see the Bears take a shot?

Sure
things cant get much worse for our offense this offseason.. but what are we kidding, JA would never go for an actual super star reciever

by Hester18 on Mar 19, 2008 7:55 AM CDT reply actions

I just don't think Johnson
could handle being on a team that may or may not have a working passing offense from day to day.

by Adam T on Mar 19, 2008 8:06 AM CDT up reply actions

you never know
He did say earlier that he could make Orton or Grossman into a all-star qb, I think our biggest problem in getting him is JA.

by VAbear311 on Mar 19, 2008 8:23 AM CDT reply actions

Absolutely.
Given our current situation at wide receiver, adding in an expensive superstar with potential personality problems who may publicly hate our quarterbacks and coaches is still an upgrade.

I would love to see
Chad in a bears uniform!!!  I guarantee he would make the franchise a lot more money than what they would have to pay him.  The guy is in his prime and can change the bears offense dramatically.  Plus, the guy is downright hillarious.  I think he would love the city of chicago and would be a great team player for the bears.  Too bad that JA doesn't have the balls to pull off a beautiful trade for him though.  In my opinion Chad is deffinitely worth our 14th overall pick and I would even throw in a 3rd next year as well if that's what it took.  Players in the draft are unproven commodities so why not give up a couple of POTENTIAL stars for a PRO BOWL wide receiver that at the rate his is going he will be HALL OF FAME!!  PULL THE TRIGGER FOR ONCE JA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe
this is what Angelo has been planning all along! Sure. Yeah, Chad Johnson has huge talent, and would be great for us on the field, but he's just a classic a-hole who would turn into a cancer very quickly.

by Doctor Chicago on Mar 19, 2008 9:52 AM CDT reply actions

I don't think
Chad is an a-hole.

But I don't think we'd get him, because JA doesn't make bold moves like that, especially on O, the Bengals don't want to trade him (because of the cap hit, their lack of replacements, and general principle), it would cost a ton to get him (and we need those resources to get other things), and we'd need to sign him to a huge new contract.

There are a lot of enormous reasons why this won't happen, and very few if any why it might happen.

Ok
Does "selfish egomaniac whiner" work better for you?

by Doctor Chicago on Mar 19, 2008 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

why not
why not... let the Bears throw their hat in the ring just to potentially raise the price for any team that does pull the trigger.

Ocho Cinco
I saw on NFL Network interview with 85 and he said it wasent so much about the money as it was about change of scenery like Moss and T.O. , it would take a miricle of god to think that we might do somthing that is so much out of the box for our teams FA tendancies. plus we have Ocho Stinko now remember. lmao

by SuperBowlXX on Mar 19, 2008 2:01 PM CDT reply actions

change of scenery
yeah this would be like the change of scenery Moss had when he went to Oakland.

Also don't call him "ocho cinco" everyone knows you can't give yourself a nickname so don't let him.

by The Ghost of Rusty Lisch on Mar 19, 2008 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah you can
especially if you do it the way he did it.

I gave myself a nickname
I tell people that my DJ name is White Sugar.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Mar 19, 2008 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions

We'll never get him BUT...
He would know that every passing play would be run for him.  He wouldn't have to share the ball with TJ Whosyomama, who is better than most teams #1.

Once again, it don't see it happening, but with The Sex Cannon back there, it could be a match made in heaven.

From a Bengals stangpoint
I think the cap hit is so big, that even if they wanted to it wouldn't be worth trading him.

by Adam T on Mar 19, 2008 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Cap Question
How much of a cap hit is there? I thought with a trade the cap number went with the player. (including the averaged signing bonus) I am no capologist and don't even play one online but I thought that was the case when we traded Thomas Jones.

by The Ghost of Rusty Lisch on Mar 19, 2008 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions

The cap hit would be
a little more than 8 million.  I think that with the cap raise of 7 million more this year though almost cancels that out, but reports have it that cincy don't want all that "dead money".  I also dispute the claim, and not from you, that the bears aren't at least a playoff contender.  Obviously the bears have a lot of holes to fill (O-line) mainly, but as WCG has said before, the bears were in every game but the dallas game, and had it not been for all the injuries on defense they could have easily have gone 10-6 or better.  There is one loss in particular that just sticks out in my mind and that is the first loss to Minnesota.  Longest field goal in that kickers career.  He just had a good day.  I think chad coming to chicago with a healthy defense and the best special teams in the league makes the bears a guaranteed playoff team, especially in the generally weaker NFC, compared to the Bengals chances in a really strong AFC.  He obviously threw out Orton and Grossmans name out there, so he obviously has the mentality that he could come into chicago and win because of his presence.  But yet again JA would never pull the trigger on a deal like this, and if he did I would have to get trashed and celebrate!!!

Think about this
Think about what CJ's body of work has been so far. He'll have 6 or 7 awesome/good games but in the rest he was average or disappeared. This is not what we need.

If JA brought him in, I'd support the decision. But I'm not gonna be pushing for Johnson to come, especially if it costs us a first or second. I'd be ok with a third.

by bs1220 on Mar 19, 2008 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

the question is what would they want
honestly, while i think he's definitely worth the #14 pick, teams rarely get great value for top receivers. throw in johnson's perceived reputation, and i wonder what the going rate might be. i'd really like to keep our #1 (unless we trade down and pick up an extra pick) to get an OL, because if we don't keep rex/orton upright and give benson some room to run, i don't think any WR will help us that much. however, rex/orton + ocho cinco + an improved o-line = a pretty decent offense.

by guy incognito on Mar 19, 2008 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Listen to what he says
Johnson says he wants to play for a contender. That's not us. I don't want him because he doesn't want to be here.

by bs1220 on Mar 19, 2008 6:09 PM CDT reply actions

If he gripes with the Bengals offense
and Carson Palmer as the QB, imagine what he would do in Chicago! Hes a great talent and entertaining player, but he would seriously become a distraction anytime he felt he was being underused. That would most certainly happen here in Chicago, so it doesnt seem like a good fit.

by gillrowdy on Mar 20, 2008 11:34 AM CDT reply actions

I agree 100%
We just don't have the offensive gameplan to defend sending a #1 and possibly more for Chad Johnson.  He's used to catching 90+ balls for well over 1,000 yards.  That's not our offense.
GO BEARS!!!!!

by McRipper on Mar 20, 2008 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

it could be
if we give our QBs any time to scan the field, give them a receiver who can consistently beat DBs, and have an offensive game plan that isn't completely predictable. with an improved line and even moderate improved play-calling from turner, johnson would do very well here, as would our offense. he'd get at least 10 balls thrown to him each game.

by guy incognito on Mar 20, 2008 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions

The difference is...
The he's not the #1 option all the time with Housh there. CJ would be the #1 option on all pass plays and have a qb who would love nothing more than to just chuck it long to him all the time.

Having said that, he ain't coming to Chicago unless he's playing AGAINST the Bears.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Mar 20, 2008 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Value
Is he worth our first round pick?

I gotta believe the answer is no.

by bs1220 on Mar 20, 2008 3:10 PM CDT reply actions

Of Course
Besides that Angelo is too small of a man to get a superstar, he'd rather draft and try to make one, but fail miserably, the 85 is a star and a proven great player. Since Angelo refuses to get a good QB, I'm sure that Chad would cause a few problems.
My thought is simple, the teams who are successful simply have the best, and I mean the best, players in the game.
