home and away
all of the home and away games are bunched together.  pretty nice to have 3 in a row in weeks 14, 15, 16.

NOT
too bad of schedule, with the exceptions of Indianapolis and Jacksonville. Only 5 teams were above .500, IND(13-3) JAC(11-5) TEN(10-6) GB(13-3) and TB(9-7). 3 at .500 HOU, MIN, and PHI. The rest are teams that had a crappy year like us, NO(7-9) DET(7-9) ATL(4-12) and STL(3-13).Hopefully Aaron Rodgers sucks, AP was a 1 year wonder and Kitna cant deliver the 10 wins he'll probibly promise again. Given those scinerios and our offence doesent suck, meaning better then 27th in the league YPG. We could win the division and be back in the playoffs. Wishfull thinking

the atlanta game
would be the first win if we had to play today.

draft can't get here soon enough.

A little worried about September
I fully expect da Bears to get pounded in week 1.  The next 3 games are worrisome.  If Delhomme is back, Carolina away could be a loss.  Tampa & Philly are decent.  The end of the schedule looks a little better, but a bad start could cause lots of turmoil: Lovie on the hot seat, Angelo on the hot seat, QB change/controversy, RB change/controversy, etc.  A 3-1 start would be great, a 2-2 start is OK too.  A 1-3 start or worse, could cause the season to spiral out of control.

Boy am I a pessimist or what?

I don't disagree
in all honesty i don't see a scenario where this team is much better than .500 if even .500.

It requires at least the pick up of a game ready tackle and a healthy for the year defense.

To actually be competitive it needs enough oline improvement to make the run game a threat (which may be multiple lineman), an actual receiving threat, and a heatlhy defense.

Oh, and a quarterback who doesn't shit the bed.

So assuming we draft a day one ready tackle that improves the entire line, and that cedric benson isn't a bust or injured again, and hester or bradley step up, and grossman or orton step up, and the defense stays healthy, and people kick to hester...we should be better than last year's 7-9.

Right now we don't win 5 games.

correction
"healthy year for the defense."

which is about as likely as it was last year.

Agreed
first half is a pretty tough tough schedule, 2nd half is pertty easy. I'd much rather have the opposite so you can get some momentum and confidence. Ideally you play your toughest games the last week or two when those teams start to rest their starters and play vanilla schemes.

Looks like an 8-8 schedule to me. I hate 8-8--not bad enough to get a difference making draft spot, not good enough to make the playoffs, not bad enough to make the coaches/gm think they need to do anything that different.

i think
if we have a team like we did in 06 we'll sneak a few wins, I feel our team is alot better than last year and we still made it to 7-9. We have a happy Briggs, Urlacher(but he'll be fine by training camp), we'll have a better line and hopefully a better running game and we'll have competition at alot of the spots, if anything I feel itll be fun to see the WR, QB and RB compete and possible the DT and Safety position(s), maybe just me but I'm feeling another NFC North Title.

by DaNate23 on Apr 15, 2008 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

We COULD be
better but so far I have to disagree. We lost a right tackle and left guard and haven't yet replaced either. We lost our only good receiver and replaced him with journeymen who were cut by their former teams. Our starting running back is coming off an injury that might cost him a step, and he wasn't good before he lost a step. We still don't have a stable qb--we have one who is too short, fumbles, throws off his back foot and can't stay healthy, and another who is a "game manager", which means he won't throw the ball over 5 yards. And that's just on offense.

We haven't had any big losses on D, but our top 2 players are both coming off significant injuries, and are unhappy with their contracts.

Maybe Angelo will have a great draft, but he needs at least 2 and maybe 3 draft picks to step in and be solid starters in order for the team to be anything over mediocre. That, and he needs his current guys to stay healthy.

I'd love to feel the same way as you, but reality bites. This team is at least a year away.

Agreed 100%
Repeat after me: This is a rebuilding year. Yes, anything can happen, but anyone expects this team to be a Top 10 team is fooling themselves. The Bears haven't approached the off-season that way, and neither should we.

FINALLY
1:00 games again! I hated last year because of all of those dumb 3:15 games. Back to the good ol' 1:00 games and a great Monday night game against Green Bay in Chicago, three days before Christmas. Could it get any better?!?!

by whitebearsox23 on Apr 15, 2008 4:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
It's kind of weird that every game not in prime time is at 1.  But I prefer the earlier games anyway.

by Doctor Chicago on Apr 16, 2008 7:57 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the purpose
of the early games is that it does get colder in Chicago, so have them play before the temp drops anymore.

by Adam T on Apr 18, 2008 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

8-8 Isn't Bad
I know people on here trash Lovie but I like him (Now Turner, not so much) and so if we draft well we might sneak into a Wild Card spot. Hopefully the Vikings don't improve any, Rodgers sucks and Detroit continues to collapse, then we could have a real shot. But right now I see the NFC North like the NFC West: the winner will be 9-7 or 10-6, then it will be like 8-8, 7-9 for two or three of the other teams with the last team maybe 6-10.

by GallopingGhost on Apr 15, 2008 5:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm thinking
We could go at least 9-7 with this schedule, which would probably be enough to win the NFC North.

Ok
I'm just looking at it from a positive standpoint, that the defense is in good shape barring injury, and if we have a good draft the offense will be competent.

@ Colts - L (too tough for opening day at their new stadium)

@ Panthers - W (someone please tell me what's so tough about Carolina)

Bucs - W (potentially one of the worst teams in the league this year)

Eagles - L (this one could be close, the Eagles are on a downward slope)

@ Lions - L (oh, hi Rashard, nice to see you... hey, stop running away!)

@ Falcons - W (please...)

Vikings - L (Bernard, stop it)

Lions - W (we finally figure out how to keep the unstoppable Jon Kitna in check)

Titans - W (completely toothless)

@ Packers - L (who's this kid taking the snaps?  He wants to make a statement!)

@ Rams - W (see: Bucs)

@ Vikings - L (I hate these guys)

Jaguars - L (they'll make a serious run this year)

Saints - W (we've owned them recently)

Packers - W (Ryan Grant isn't surprising anyone anymore)

@ Texans - W (we may be playing for a playoff spot at this point, and they'll be finishing out another losing season)

by Doctor Chicago on Apr 16, 2008 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree with your conference picks
two losses to the vikings, and splits with the Lions and Packers.

2-4

a competent offense, and healthy defense is pretty subjective, I'll buy into a healthier defense, but if it doesn't feautre Mike Brown or Mike Brown level production, it will still be poor against the run. As far as offense, I don't see a scenario where they draft enough day one ready people to make the offense competent. That's a lot of rookies stepping up.

All I'll say about the rest of the schedule is that this team struggled against the OAKLAND RAIDERS last year. Think about that. A last minute play to beat one of the worst teams in the league. Right now its the same team, except assumed better health and assumed major draft gains. Last eyar I said this team didn't do enough in the offseason or draft to keep up. Now their worse. Awesome.

We're in agreement on this.
The Bears got lucky in a crappy, crappy division in 2005.

They were lucky beyond belief in 2006.

They were unlucky in injuries, but lucky in a few game situations, so 7-9 is probably a pretty decent indicator of their abilities, unlike the 13-3 the year before.

The Bears had one of the worst offenses in all of the NFL last year, and it's gotten worse at every position except TE and QB. They will have to draft some real good players for it even be as "good" as last year's team. It will have to draft standouts or get some big step-ups in production from current players if they are to contend.

we also swept the packers
who were in the nfc championship game does that mean we are better then them no, no just because we struggled against the raiders doesnt mean we are automatically as bad as they are. assuming the offense isn't competent and the defense isnt healthy is also subjective, all of our opinions are subjective moron, we are on goddamn a bears blog.

the point
mongoloid, was that his version of a competent offense and mine would be different, thus creating different views of the season and explaining some of the variations in our points.

beating the packers twice and almost losing to the reaiders shows the flaw of this team, they play up and down to thier opponents. a lot of that is coaching and a lot of it is not being very good. that same team that wasn't very good last eyar as of right now is worse.

So I guess your analysis is.......
That the Bear's team will start the season "as is" and draft nobody?  I recall starting a 2005 season with a 4th round QB; it was assumed it was going to be a wasted season.  I wonder what the Tribune predictions were for 2005.  Now I know you're going to say we had a good RB back then but did we know Thomas Jones was going to be any good at the time?  Doubtful!  Was that defense any better than what we have now? Were we getting hammered in all our losses last year?  I only recall one (Dallas).  We did that with a garbage O-line, drop happy receivers and a RB that hit the hole with about as much force as a leaf hitting the ground.  The key is if, a big if, our defense stays healthy.  We were snake bitten with the injuries last year so I don't see that happening again, plus all the backups got experience and did fairly well.  A motivated RB (Forte), an OT (William, Otah), and a defense that can stay healthy there isn't any reason we couldn't go 10-6.  Hell, 2005 we had a 4th round QB, went 1-3 to start and still managed to go 11-5.  Do any of you guys remember that?  WGC, could you scan the archives to see what everyone was predicting before that season?  It would be interesting, at least to me, to see what the predictions were. That offense back then look just as miserable as the one we have right now minus the draft.

05 defense was better
it had brown.

my analysis is above.

"We did that with a garbage O-line, drop happy receivers and a RB that hit the hole with about as much force as a leaf hitting the ground."

all of which we still have, and for any improvement would require almost every draftee to step up and contribute at a high level immediately.

brown
assuming he is hurt again this year or cut, but barring that and no injuries what so ever then yeah its the same defense.

I love you rob in iraq
like only a optimistic Bears fan could love another optimistic fan. We will not be as bad as everyone thinks, all I can say is just wait and see, JA is gonna be the magic man this year and pull out illusions (not tricks, tricks are something a whore does for money...or cocaine), he's got something up his sleeve and like a giddy kid on Christmas Eve I'll be open eyed ready for him to unveil it.

Brown is still key for defense
Sadly, the team still will rely heavily on Brown's ability to stay healthy throughout the year. No one else on the roster with the ability as yet to replace his quarterbacking abilities on D. But if Dusty comes back fully healed and plays up to his potential, that could be a big plus as well.
