2009 Compensatory Picks

This is a pretty ridiculous topic but seeing teams get a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick got me thinking.  That's a nice bonus.  Anyways, the NFL does not release it's formula but this article below seems to do a pretty good job predicting it.  It's pretty much what you would expect, value of players received vs. value of players leaving (based on salary and playing time on the new team) with a couple of other restrictions.  Berrian obviously helps this, but noone else the Bears lost does (Ayanbadejo, Gilmore, and Jimmy Kennedy.)  Coming in are Booker and Lloyd, who have low salaries and playing time is a wildcard.  That still leaves us with a big loss vs. potentially no big gains and an overall net loss of players, which would result in a decent pick.

One thing I don't quite know is if re-signing players during the free agency period (Briggs) affects this.  If it does that evens things out.  And of course free agency isn't over yet so the net loss vs. gain could change, and that seems to be a pretty big factor.

Anyways, sort of boring and technical article but pretty interesting as it covers a little known topic.

sorry
my bad for taking a stab at investigating how the Bears may benefit from losing a big player. maybe i should just stick to diaries about our lack of wide receivers, running back situation, or who I think should play QB and just repeat the obvious things that everyone on this blog knows already.

i don't think
quoting snl when you don't get something is really meant to be offensive to the author.

whether or not it even needs to be said is a whole other question...

Since they didnt lose Briggs
I dont see how he could count as an incoming. So Berrian's huge signing(not sure of the "bonus" money figure) should result in a 3rd/4th round pick next year. The Ravens have high compensatory picks this year, Im sure they will benefit from it. I wouldnt be surprised if the Bears did sign a FA after the June cuts to offset Berrian though.

briggs
I could see that because he actually hit the open market it's considered signing a free agent.  When you look at team signings of free agents, he is always listed on there for the Bears.  Meanwhile, Rex Grossman is not because he signed before he hit free agency.  Not sure though, hopefully not.

I don't have any info on this
But getting penalized for re-signing your own player seems to go against the spirit of the the compensatory picks.

It seems to me that you lose picks for signing guys and other teams get those picks to make up for the loss.

Soooooo....if we 'lost' Briggs the we should get a compensatory pick as well.

Good point
didn't think of it like that, he has to be a non-factor then in the compensatory picks.
