Biggest Need in Draft?

We all know that the most needed position in this draft is almost any position on the offensive side of the ball besides tight end. Defense could be address with the #14 pick like a defensive tackle if Sedrick Ellis somehow fell there or possibly a safety such as Kenny Phillps. But what do the Bears need the most? A quarterback? A running back? An offensive lineman? A wide receiver? The Bears have a lot of holes to fill but only one pick to show what direction they want to head in.

This question isn't WHO the Bears should select in the draft but WHAT they need to get in the draft. What position do they need to draft?

o-line is obviously the biggest need
but most people want mendenhall (including me) because he's a supreme talent and a game changer.

any o-lineman that will probably be around at #14 (otah, williams) probably aren't gonna be franchise tackles or huge difference makers. that's why if mendenhall is there, we have to take him.

i don't care if we go o-line with every other pick we have after our first. as long as we get mendenhall, i'll be happy.

if that is true:
"any o-lineman that will probably be around at #14 (otah, williams) probably aren't gonna be franchise tackles or huge difference makers."

then i agree with mendenhall as the pick, however, noone, including the main mendenhall flag waver on this site, has really brought anything showing that, other than pointing out a lot of good lineman were not first rounders.

wish we would have swung a FA tackle, we are pretty much forced to draft one at some point and play him.

Hard
to sign a FA OL the bears only really like to spend their money in house. if we had ever gotten a bad ass free agent somewhere in the past then i think we'd be more apt to free agency. but basicly most of the FA"s we have signed have been a flop. Cordell Sewart, whoo hoo. the only one i can think of that didnt was Thomas Jones(arizona). I liked that dude especially after the Giants game in 2006.

Almost my exact same thoughts - word for word.

There are 5 projected very good(franchise) linemen
in this draft; and a very significant dropoff after they are gone. There are no immediate starting caliber OTs that will be available with #44pick. The Bears have Tait, who can play either side, and must upgrade LeClair, the only other OT on the roster. We can get starting caliber RBs into the 3rd round, or at least platoon RBs.

you're right Chad
Joe Thomas was a 16 game starter last year as a rookie and you know how the Browns run game sucked with old man Lewis @ the helm. Levi Brown started 11 games and played in 13. Joe Staley started all 16 Games. All 3 were 1 roung OT and it wasent considered to be the deepest in years like this year. Lewis 1300+yrds, Edge 1200+ yrds,
Gore 1100+yrds rushing. Benson and Peterson rushed for 1184 combined. Where do you get this stuff, out of a cracker jack box? lol

Did you read my post?
I told you NOT to name top 5 picks.  There are not 2 top 5 offensive tackles in this draft as there were last year.  Joe Thomas, in this draft could get picked over Jake Long.  Levi Brown, another top 5 pick.

The only point you make is in Joe Staley.  But that would make him the third offensive tackle taken.  I have stated that I don't want the FOURTH offensive tackle, yes big difference.  And possibly not the third one.

the thing is
i don't know if i can tell the difference between the second and the fourth best OT in this draft. and your right. rarely does an OT drafted later in the top-five make a difference in his first few seasons.
