The bears need to stop looking for a world beater

We need to face facts the bears are probably never going to have a peyton manning or tom brady type qb. The bears have been looking for a franchise qb for as long as I have been alive. We should change our focus and bring in someone who is going to stabilize the position, someone who is above average but not going to turn any heads, somebody like jake plummer (not advocating we go and get jake the snake). The only player I can think of that could fit that bill would be, all but forgotten buccaneer chris simms, he is good not great, and I think would be perfect as the bears signal caller. I know he hasnt played in like two years but he is an upgrade over ortman.

TB has 20 QBs on their roster

okay, that’s an exaggeration, but at least 1-2 will get cut…possibly/probably simms. there are always decent QBs that get cut every year in the spring/summer. chances are high we get one of them. i think rex/orton will be fine as long as the line is decent (which it should be) and their receivers don’t drop everything thrown their way (hopefully the case), but i’m sure we’ll have another option once teams make more cuts.

by guy incognito on May 1, 2008 10:09 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

not sure why

everyone is looking for cuts to be a qb option. 99.9 percent of the time a guy who gets cut won’t be anygood. I would think if chris simms were any good he wouldn’t be getting cut by a team that doesn’t have a “world beater” at qb anyway.

I don't know about Simms

but TB is not getting rid of Garcia or Griese and they just keep drafting and signing more QB’s left and right If Simms gets cut is because TB has a bunch of developing QB’s who still have upside and have to figure out which ones to keep.

maybe

in your best case scenario that’s why, but it’s also entirely possible he gets cut because he sucks.

You're right

He probably does suck! I’m not saying he is a “world beater”.

simms

has he even taken a snap since he ruptured his spleen something like 2 years ago? now if the bucs cut jeff garcia, i’ll advocate getting him…although…i guess we probably do need to sign someone to be qb3 since hill or hanie should probably end up on the scout team.

I like the premise, leopold.

I don’t think Simms is that guy, though. Maybe. If they’re never going to draft anyone (because really there is only a “top QB” every 3-5 years), they need to keep bringing in cheap free agents. Guys like Brian Griese, Jeff Garcia, Jon Kitna, Trent Dilfer. Guys who have had up & down careers and could come together w/ the Bears. Unfortunately, my guess is the Bears “learned their lesson” and won’t ever go that route again.

never stop looking

I want the best quarterback in the NFL to play for the Bears. I don’t want a little above average i want the shit. I want a quarterback that turns heads makes plays and scores points.
I dont have the answer but i dont want an average player, i want the best.

won't happen

great defense and a strong running game. that has and always will be tops. medicore is all you will ever get from a qb in chicago.

As I mentioned...

...that only happens by being among he absolute worst in the league (which no one really wants), taking a huge risk and trading up (which is extremely costly and Angelo will never do) or getting lucky by consistently drafting QB’s in the middle round and hoping one turns out great (which the Bears obviously aren’t doing).

And it’s really this last part that baffles me. If the friggin’ Patriots can take fliers on guys like Matt Cassell or Kevin O’Connell, why can’t the Bears. I think that’s the hugest indictment of Angelo right there. If his team is so fucked that he can’t even take a mid-round flier on some of these high-ceiling guys, how shitty of a job has he done?

Um first of all

The Patriots won 18 straight games. I think that is the definition of a team who could waste a pick.

Second of all. You make it sound like these mid round QB’s are so great. You make it sound like if we draft one every year in the middle of the draft we are definitely striking gold. You’re very wrong. We could do that every year and still have nothing. In fact we probably will have the same situation we have. Good QB’s come in the first round. Even then it is a risk.

For every midround QB success you can name, I can name you 10 that didn’t work. Those are horrible odds. Kurt Warner, Tony Romo, and Jake Delhome were undrafted.

This year their were 13 drafted. How many of those do you think will be top 15 QB’s? I say 2. The rest will be similar or worse than Grossman and Neckbeard.

Thanks for reminding me about the Patriots, I had completely forgotten.

Glad we have geniuses like you to remind us of these things.

And no, the Patriots couldn’t waste a pick. Apparently, you like talking out of your ass because you obviously have no idea what the Patriots lost on defense. They had needs. No team can “waste” a pick.

Apparently, reading comprehension isn’t one of your strong suits, either. I’m arguing that they don’t need a world-beater and only way to get one is to get lucky. And the Bears don’t need that. I understand that most mid-rounders turn out as shit. (I’m glad you also like to pull numbers out of your ass like 1 in 10). For ever three UFA’s you name (which you did), I can name 100 that don’t. I’ll take 10% odds over 1%, no?

Okay, bring up your genius rebuttal. I can’t wait to be further enlightened.

My Apologies, Tyler1147!

I guess you like many on hear do not try to understand what someone is saying. Either that or you are just so ignorant and in love with what you thought at first glance that you can’t pry your sticky little fingers off the keyboard long enough to let your brain process a thought you didn’t orignally consider.

You are completely right about those Patriots. They didn’t have any room to make a risk with an offense averaging nearly 37 points a game.

I’ll take a DT that Angelo drafts in the 3rd over a QB that Angelo drafts in the 3rd every year. You play to your strengths. Angelo is terrible at drafting offense and excellent at drafting defense. I’d rather use a first round pick on QB than a 4th.

I’m sorry that my made up numbers didn’t help you understand my point. Let me make it very simple for you. 3rd round – undrafted free agent QB’s very rarely become good starters. To me their is no difference between the guy drafted in round 3 or round 7 or is a free agent. You are picking up a guy who you hope can develop skills that aren’t currently present. If they were present they would have been drafted in round one. You can’t predict who will make to a higher plane. It is a huge gamble. Because it is such a big gamble, I could care less if this year we gamble that we would have missed. To me that is probably better odds.

Why don’t you work on trying to understand instead of being so stubborn. You make some good points and I’m willing to tell you when you do.

I guess I'm smarter than you think

I may be pulling numbers out my rear end, but I am right. You can think I’m an idiot all you want, but my evaluation of the draft is correct. I’m not ready to miss on 10 QB’s to find Gus Frerotte or Brad Johnson. If are team is more stabilized at defensive depth and have a offensive line, then role the dice every year.

From 1992, which was the last time the Packers were looking for a quarterback, to 2007, 80 quarterbacks were drafted in the sixth round or later. Of those 80, an amazing 10% made the Pro Bowl. Six actually were elected to the Pro Bowl: Brad Johnson (No. 227), Jeff Blake (166), Trent Green (222), Matt Hasselbeck (187), Marc Bulger (168) and Brady (199). Two others went to the Pro Bowl as injury replacements: Elvis Grbac (219) and Gus Frerotte (197). During the Brett Favre era, two free agents were elected to the Pro Bowl: Jeff Garcia and Tony Romo. —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Sixth round or later is a mid-round?

My bad. Making up your own definitions must help your argument, huh? Makes you feel all genius-y and stuff?

For every midround QB success you can name, I can name you 10 that didn’t work.

Mid-round = 3rd through 5th; Sorry. Try again.

Never mind, don’t. I’ll just leave it to say that I’m glad you think a CB who has started all of four games in 2006 & 2007 COMBINED is such a great pick. Awesome.

for all you rex haters.......

the bears need to stop looking for a qb because they have one.

anybody can quote me on this…. rex is going to not only lead this team to a 10 plus win season but he will also make the pro bowl.

I hope

I try not to defend rex too much, but I really do like him alot, and I think if we got rid of ron turner he could really flourish.

yeah you did

and it probably could have a happened if the coaching staff hadnt panicked and put griese in. remember rex’s record against division opponents? he doesnt loose to bad teams or division opponents and i think given the fact that the next 3 games after were against division opponents, the 07 team could have very well been a 10 win team with rex under center. he played some great football before he got hurt and i believe he can show those same skills this year. This offense is a run based system. in 06 we had a running game and rex played some good football. in 07 with no running game, 2 qbs couldnt get it done. with the addition of forte, i look for this offense to turn around.

only lost to one, but he put us in the hole aginst az and did nothing to get us out of it.

I doubt 10 wins.

I love the benching. The reason he protected the ball better was because he got benched and knew the Kyle “2 yards” Orton was up next. It was a reality check and I think it really helped him when he came back. I hope this year he doesn’t get a big head again and throw the ball up when gets in trouble or we get down in the fourth.

hey whoever is superbowlXX

that “f. u loser” comment is unacceptable if it was directed to me. i posted a link of a well respected coach in this league who brought insight into a sketchy issue. there is no need to speak like that. if wcg reads this, i would like this guy thrown out for his remarks.

the comment was directed to the link posted......

Herman edwards doesent know what the hell hes talking about b/c he has never had nor drafted a Good QB, Let me know when Mike Holmgren, Tony Dungy or Bill Billachec, who know what a real franchise QB looks like, says that Grossman is a good QB…...stop being a cry baby. Plus what happened to the first admendment, is its use banned from Windy City?
