Robbie Gould and the Bears Agree To 5 More
The Chicago Bears and place kicker Robbie Gould agreed to terms on a new 5 year extension. The deal keeps Gould in blue and orange until the 2013 season.
The Penn State product is the most accurate field goal kicker in Bears history among those with at least 50 attempts, having connected on 84 of 99 tries (84.8 percent) in three seasons.
“I’m really excited,” said Gould, who was entering the final year of his original contract. “I’m excited to stay in the city of Chicago and to be a Chicago Bear. This is one of those opportunities that’s once-in-a-lifetime and life-changing, and I’m just excited to have it.
“I’m excited that my hard work has paid off, but I’m definitely not done working hard and making field goals and kicking kickoffs. That’s what I get paid to do. Now it’s just a matter of being able to go out there and have fun, relax and enjoy it.”
Our offense is in such a state of confusion it helps to know they are attempting to keep our defense and special teams at a high level. If they can get Tommie Harris and Devin Hester extended and then throw a little dough at Urlacher to keep him happy, it would go a long way to get our minds off of still not having a franchise QB yet.

I think
that’s WAAAAAAAAAYYY too long of a contract for a kicker.

Maybe you hadn't heard...
Uh, football contracts aren’t guaranteed.
They could have given him a 20-year contract and it wouldn’t matter; the only thing that does is the guaranteed money.

What's the salary look like, anyone know?
I couldn’t find the terms anywhere.

Sports Nite
Just said it’s reported to be $15.5 million, the most in NFL history for a kicker.

I believe I read last night
that it also came with 4.25 million up front.

Good Deal
Gould’s one of the most productive players we have and it seems like every game he’s makin hard to hit field goals or game winning ones

WCG you said it best.
If they can lock up Harris and Hester and keep Urlacher happy, I would be ecstatic going into the next few years. And who knows? Sometimes it seems like the Bears sign a bunch of players to extensions around the same time so maybe this will be the first of a few.

wow
robbie gould? ok. i’d like few more touchbacks and a career long of more than 49?
does anyone get a vinatieri feel from gould? i sure as hell don’t, eventhough the numbers seem to prove otherwise.
maybe its just me.

Gould
is the most accurate kicker in Bears history. In 2006 he was only secont to LT in points scored with 143.
hit the overtime field goal to sent us to the NFC championchip game , in turn we went to the superbowl.
i dont have an issue for sighning a consistant kicker who also is focused in the clutch.

hmmm
touchbacks aren’t a priority. kicking off consistently inside the 5 is….but i do agree with the career long ststement. something 50 plus would be nice

i'll take accuracy
who cares about an extra couple of yards? reliability is the biggest factor.
on a side note, I remember in week 17 of 2005 Gould made a 53 yarder or something like that in the metrodome that got wiped out because of a Bears penalty. I was always pissed about that because it would have totally avoided comments about his distance since everyone always talks about career long. like you’re saying, the distance would be nice but accuracy and clutch kicking are much more important.

thats right....
Vanderjactd or however you spell it….....had a boot, but couldent put it through when his team needed it most. Remember reading Peytons lips,,,” He missed it”. Accuracy is soo important….
How many FG has Gould missed beyond 49yrds?

He was
also an ex Patriot…...practice squad though , but better than Gastkowski. Agreed?

He's officially
0/2 50+ (both in ‘06), but the one in (domed) Minny was 53. He didn’t attempt any FGs from 50+ last season. I think he could have once or twice but we opted to punt. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense, especially at home. Good kickers aren’t much better than 50% from that distance and field position is much more important, especially with our decimated D last season and the fact that our STs are amazing, even at coverage (less the wire-fiasco in SD). Maynard is a very good punter (IMHO).

love gould
but we really had to make him the highest paid kicker in nfl history? oh well, good to have him locked up long term and hopefully hester and harris are close behind.

Agreed and it almost seems like this could HURT us
Because if the Bears are willing to dole out historic cash for a kicker well now aren’t Hester and Harris going to line up and say “Well if you have all this money for him, then I want mine. I deserve to be the highest paid DT or WR or whatever.” And now Urlacher could say well what about me? I’ve been here longer and been loyal to the team but you dish out cash to the kicker first?!

that begs and interesting question
what will d hester be paid as, cause there is no way he thinks he should be paid as a topflight wide receiver, cause he isn’t one, however he deserves more than just being the highest paid special teamer. it will be interesting to see how his contract will work out.

We need to see what all other kickers make first
It is the richest contract, but by how much. It could just be the next level. Next year some other kicker is up for a contract and he becomes the riches. It doesn’t mean we overspent.

Thanks for commenting more often lately.
Vanderjact and Vinatari got around 1.5 million a year just a couple of years ago and they were considered two of the best ever.

Nate Kaeding
signed for $11.5 million a couple of years ago. I can’t remember the years though. Vinatieri signed for 5 years with the Colts for about the same as Kaeding.

Good signing
Gould is one of the better kickers in the league (based on stats alone, you could argue he deserved to be a Probowler). The only problem I see with him is the inability to get field goals over 49+ yards. He’s accurate, but not great power
