Get To Know The Cover 2
Over at Mile High Report , they have a section which is basically Football 101. They look at different schemes and plays. They have recently covered the Cover 2 starting with it's history and leading up to the Tampa 2.
Since it applies, I thought you might be interested in giving it a read.
The original C2 was used to defuse timing offenses. As QBs became more adept at the deeper intricacies being brought to football, more and more offenses relied on finesse. Offenses started spreading the field, and the original defense player types in the NFL (geared towards stopping the run) were unable to keep up with the new emphasis on passing that began to take hold in the 1960's. Teams running the C2 used the system regardless of the formation on the field. It was run out of 4-3, 3-4, and the several nickle packages.

What does the price of tea in China have to do with anything related to a Bears blog?

I think it is pretty obvious to both of you, but
I’ll state the obvious. We play cover 2 and tampa 2. It is our base defense. I enjoyed the article even though I understood the concept. It reaffirmed what I knew and gave me some insight into the history of how they developed. WCG thought that some of us might be enriched with a well written article on our defensive scheme.

Bizarro Windy City Gridiron
Did anyone read the comments to that post? Everyone was complimenting each other and telling them how much they appreciated their opinion. There’s hardly one comment without someone else saying how great it is, then the original commenter would share his feelings about the reply. It’s sickening.
While some people say we are too cynical here, I personally get a kick out of the smart ass comments and insults that keep people sharp and making people think twice about idiotic comments (some people anyways).

Houston Sucks...
This is for BEARS fans only please…....Do not mention that team unless we kick their ass in week 16. lol ......just when you thought it was safe to post a comment….....plus i dont think there are too many die hard fans of football who dont know what cover 2, that we run cover 2 or how cover 2 is run.
I think sometimes that cover 2 exposes us too much 25 yrds down field when the ball is thrown in the window between LB’s and safeties. supposed to have the safeties there to help with the long ball as well but, when you dont have safties who are healthy or who are unexpirenced, is how we are getting beat deep. Running cover 2 is a safe defense to run but switching it up another formation besides cover 2 and nickel( which it seems that is all we run) might confuse the offence to make mistakes. Our line backers are athletic enough to throw 3_4 into the mix every now and then. It seems to me that teams are having success with 3-4 ( ie. NE, PITTS, BALTIMORE).

the long pass is a weakness
but that is why you need a good pass rush. if you give the qb time, there are big holes in the defensive backfield.
