Cedric Benson Arrested!

Former Longhorn arrested

Former Longhorn Cedric Benson was arrested Saturday evening by officers with the Texas Park and Wildlife and Lower Colorado River Association. Benson is out on a $14,500 bail. Benson was arrested for boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

Fun times. Do you think he realizes that the Bears drafted a running back in the second round?

WCG:  This just further points to Cedric Benson's horrible and lackadaisical attitude.  It doesn't matter what the circumstances are, he believes he is untouchable and never has anything to worry about.  He has always has a sense of entitlement and while I don't know what the Bears will do, I have to imagine they have at least considered trading or cutting him.

not the worst thing in the world

until the resisting arrest part. any sort of suspension and his career is probably over.

Maybe Bear career

doubt this is enough to knock him out of football.

Eric Steinbach

was arrested for boating while intoxicated last year. He didn’t get a suspension. The resisting arrest could get him, but I doubt it.
It does give the Bears an excuse to cut/trade him without admitting he’s a bust (any more than they already did by drafting Forte).

I know I’m much less scared of Benson than Wolfe and Forte September 7th.

i think that

and his sucking might be enough, he’s never really shown enough to be a project and hasn’t done enough to be a verteran pick up. not sure who would take a flyer on him with that plate in his leg. maybe to fill out a roster.

by mike b on May 4, 2008 1:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Obviously

this was a set up by Bears management so they have an easy way to get out of the Benson Era. Smart move.

He’ll likely get suspended for this, like mike b said especially for the resisting arrest part. What a headcase. Good riddance. Looks like Peterson and Wolfe will be splitting backup time to Forte.

If released

We could use that spot for another RB or use it for depth at another position, like QB,OL, S and DT scince we have had alot of injuries and inconsistancies at these positions.

can we just give him to the jets?

Have fun sitting behind TJ (again), Ced. Watch a real RB play.

he got pepper sprayed

thats just funny… but I don’t think the Bears should cut him. from the little i understand about his contract we have already paid him most of his money. might as well try to get a return out of him as a 2nd back. As frustrated as I am by Bensons lack of anything um… impressive, i think he is a heck of a change of pace for Forte and maybe goaline situations. Maybe this incident will motivate him (as if Forte wasnt enough) or give him what appears to me (not knowing the guy AT ALL) some needed humility… i doubt anybody will trade for him. and the bears will not replace him with a free agent that is good because that costs money. if they really wanted to improve the position they would have signed michael turner (and same draft) but i get the feeling these guys are happy starting AP so lets keep ced around. we are better with him than without him, but it is difficult to get past the fact that hes not worth what we paid. I’m not sold on this Forte guy so anymore anxiety over the rb situation is not good for what has to be the least talented offense in the league (reference the whole no qb thing)

Boating while intoxicated? I knew there was a reason I liked this guy.

But now Chicago has another trade chip for Chad Johnson, as this arrest no doubt makes him twice as appealing to Cincinnati as before.

Insert clever and witty remark slash pun here!

by ES46NE10 on May 4, 2008 1:49 PM CDT   0 recs

correct me if i'm wrong here

but an action like this could be grounds to void his contract so not only would we rid ourselves of this guy but he wouldn’t count against the cap. Right?

by tempchad on May 4, 2008 3:12 PM CDT   0 recs

doubt it

I’m not sure but I wouldn’t think we could do that. These aren’t even felonies, and there is no way that we wrote it in his contract that we could void it if he picked up a couple of misdemeanors on the lake.

Rookies Who Hold-out

Will never deserve or receive respect. I usually like Angelo’s draft picks, but I never really cared for Benson -especially at #4. How much further ahead would we be if they had drafted an o-lineman then?

by phastphil on May 4, 2008 6:02 PM CDT   0 recs

i don't think so

the 2005 draft wasn’t known for having any “great” o-lineman. the only ones that have made names for themselves are Jamaal Brown and Logan Mankins, both of which would have been reaches with the 4th overall pick. i hate thinking about what “could have been” in the draft. it’s just not fair to JA to blame him for drafting Benson.

hold outs

in a league where there are no guaranteed contracts, i don’t hold it against a player for holding out to try to get his money while he can.

and emmitt smith was a hold out. just sayin.

by lopey986 on May 4, 2008 7:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

"Rookie" Hold-Outs

Did Emmit Smith hold out has a rookie? If he did – he went out and proved himself on the field – Benson has shown us nada, but for a few glimpses of living up to his potential. I wouldn’t put the fault completely o JA either, but I thought then and still do now – Benson was a wasted #4 pick.
Forte in the second round will prove to be a better investment.

by phastphil on May 5, 2008 12:33 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Now for the good news

From the Chicago Bears website

“Second-round running back Matt Forte of Tulane was arguably the most impressive player on the practice field all three days, while third-round receiver Earl Bennett of Vanderbilt and seventh-round receiver Marcus Monk of Arkansas showed considerable progress from start to finish.

Wide receiver Marcus Monk performed well at the Bears’ rookie minicamp this weekend.
"You would like for your top skill guys to stand out," said coach Lovie Smith. "Matt Forte, since Day 1, since the first practice, stood out. You noticed him catching the ball and running. It looked like it wasn’t too big for him. It looked like he’s been here before and that’s what you want to see.

"I thought Earl Bennett made progress from Day 1. You set the bar and you just want to make progress throughout the time. We were able to do that."

For the third straight day Sunday, Forte displayed athleticism and quickness, moving swiftly and fluidly as a rusher and receiver.

"It was fun to come out here and play again and get these practices and learn these plays," Forte said. "The whole weekend went well and I got better every day. And now I know what I’m doing, so I can go full speed again."”

I would say the clock on Benson is ticking, talk about a player not living up to his expectations. I really have to wonder how Angelo took this guy with the number 4 pick when he had all this trouble in his background:

“Benson was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 12th round (370th overall) of the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft. He signed with the team, but also attended Texas with the Dodgers paying for his schooling. Benson spent 2001 and 2002 playing summer ball at Vero Beach, but failed to show up for training camp in 2003 and then quit the sport in 2004. He acknowledged that the Dodgers were not pleased when he failed to report and later quitting the team, as they invested over $100,000 in him. He then had several run-ins with the law, having been arrested in 2002 for drug possession (charges later dropped) and again in 2003 for breaking into a house where he claimed his stolen television was in. He pleaded to a misdemeanor charge prior to the opening of 2004 fall camp, thus avoiding a jail sentence.”

by beardown on May 4, 2008 6:59 PM CDT   0 recs

impressive

In this booking mug released by the Austin Police Dept., Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson is shown after he was arrested Saturday, May 3, 2008 in Austin, Texas. Benson allegedly failed a sobriety test while operating a 30-foot boat, then resisting arrest before being hit with pepper spray and dragged ashore by officers. Benson faces charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest after the incident Saturday night on Lake Travis, Travis County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Roger Wade said.

by lopey986 on May 4, 2008 7:50 PM CDT   0 recs

What are the odds...

This ends up on one of those Tru TV shows? As much as this would be a nice segway into a post-Benson era, I tend to think that a lot of NFL players, good ones and bad ones, make mistakes. He shouldn’t have resisted, there’s no excuse for that, but a lot of people go out and drink too much NFL players or not. He’s an idiot, no doubt. I wonder if all Texas running backs these days are head cases. But I also have to say if there are just enough Benson haters here to make this what pushes it over the edge instead of his on the field play.

What am I talking about? Cut your losses and move on!

what a terrible person benson is!

he went out and had some fun and perhaps accidently drank too much. who does that? how selfish can you be? he was drinking on a boat- he clearly doesn’t care about the bears. nothing says ‘sense of entitlement’ like being drunk on a saturday night! who would do such a thing?

there is no denying the legality of what benson did. he is at fault and will get punished. unfortunately your end of post conclusions are bullshit. nobody makes mistakes, huh? it’s just an immediate indictment of character? how many boat dui’s does that make for benson? why, he’s a borderline terrorist! if he really wanted to be a starter in the nfl he would never consume alcohol to excess. drunk on may 3? how does he expect to be productive in september and beyond? there is no way. your thoughts are laughably over the top. chill the fuck out.

i wish someone had told me that sss had replaced rationality with caps lock.

by MarketMaker on May 5, 2008 1:01 AM CDT   0 recs

attn: MarketMaker

Your argument may seem logical on the surface. Give him a break, you say. Who doesn’t make mistakes? It’s only May, he has plenty of time to sober up before the season! But it’s wrong nonetheless.

Just because one person makes a mistake, doesn’t mean another has free reign to do so. That is why, in this society, the law is the standard, not other people. That is why a police officer can arrest another person for breaking the law. It is the law that is the standard. The cop may have made this mistake, too, but at this instance he is there to enforce the law.

However, when you are a highly publicized athlete, the rules should indeed be different for you—stricter. Therefore, when something like this happens, you need to be held to a higher standard. This wasn’t an accident. It was intentional. The beer didn’t absorb into his body by osmosis. He purposefully drank it. Any and all actions tell us about a person’s character. There are no excuses, there are no redos. If you go out and get drunk regularly, you’re a drunk. If you drink once in a while, you’re a casual drinker. These all reveal a person’s character. Benson has done nothing to show that he is worthy of the contract he was given. He has consistent dropped the ball as far as leadership, work ethic, responsibility, etc.

This is why we’re on his case. It’s not just this one act—which we could forgive him for if it was a one-time thing. However, with Benson, it is habitual.

by bs1220 on May 5, 2008 6:35 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

attn: bs

all of your statement is irrelevant. if benson ran for 1200 yards last year, you wouldn’t give a fuck what he was doing on his boat in the offseason. so say it like it is- this is judgement based on performance. his character? leadership? work ethic? responsibility? wtf are you talking about? who gives a fuck about that? if he was having good seasons as a running back you wouldn’t care about these things. this is the nfl, not the boy scouts. good samaritan merit badges don’t exist. there are a lot of bad citizens in the nfl, but nobody cares when they PLAY FOOTBALL WELL. get off the high horse and realize that you want him to be a good football player 1000X more than you want him to be a good person. using these types of incidences as justification for your ill-opinion of a football player’s results are the height of hypocrisy.

i wish someone had told me that sportsnation had replaced rationality with caps lock.

Whether

He did it once or not….it is ILLEGAL to opperate a vehicle or poat under the influence of alcohol. Hence he broke the no tollerence rule after the Tank Johnson insident. I understand people who make mistakes but he has alot of money invested in him by the bears and he can drink sociably like the rest of america just cant do it operating a vehicle land or sea.

by SuperBowlXX on May 5, 2008 6:36 AM CDT   0 recs

innocent until proven guilty

So we can all agree that we don’t like Benson – but if the Bears cut him before Training Camp, then they’ll look like incredible hypocrites. In other words, Tank Johnson gets numerous second – chances, despite being warned repeatedly that he’d be in deep doo – doo if he screwed up again. But Benson? Nahh, you’re outta here.

by Waylon on May 5, 2008 9:17 AM CDT   0 recs

This proves

The double standard in the NFL. The Steelers earlier this off season released a back up player after one incident but it has other players who did worse and never punished them. The Bengals; Chris Henry was on what his 7th chance or something and they JUST cut him and they still have that Pollak guy who has been out for TWO YEARS after drug suspensions. If you’re a good player and you get in some altercations teams are more likely to show some patience; you’re a back up? You gone. What the Bears do is anyone’s guess but I would think if he has an underwhelming pre-season and the cap hit isn’t too bad, this could end up being his ticket out of town.

by GallopingGhost on May 5, 2008 3:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i'm pretty sure

you’re thinking of Odell Thurman, not Pollack (who hasn’t played for the las two years or so because of a serious neck injury, which recently forced him to retire). I agree with your view of the double standards in the NFL. It’s sad that it is that way, but I doubt theres a coach out there who has the balls to release a star because of problems with the law.

just on am 1000, said benson has been working pretty hard from what he had heard, and that benson came in heavier last year becasue he thought that’s why he was getting hurt. says he is lighter already.

Also said steltz is a really smart guy, knew the bears defense after one day.

also said monk was a “strong core away” from maybe be a special player next year.

Free Ced Benson!!!

Anyone believe his side of the story (on espn.com)

by Ando on May 5, 2008 10:35 AM CDT   0 recs

I think it is possible.

I know a lot of cops that had authority issues in school and use police work as power trip. Actually I work with lots of troubled teens and have seen many of them pursue police work. I have been pulled over a couple times by guys that were being arrogant and treating me like a felon and I didn’t do anything wrong. They were even more mad when they couldn’t give me any tickets.

It is possible, but I’m staying neutral on the whole thing. I also heard the comment on 1000 about Benson being lighter. I’d like to keep the guys as the number 2 back since he is already paid.

i wouldn't trust the story just yet

benson’s account is completely different. completely. and pretty damn detailed, if you ask me. if he’s lying, man, he’s really worked hard to come up with that story. i am thinking this is cops being cops. if anyone from the boat can corroborate that benson wasn’t drunk, i hope he goes hard after the police. not all cops are bad. but some are, and they basically get away with anything they want, especially targeting minorities.

by guy incognito on May 5, 2008 11:09 AM CDT   0 recs

if he is innocent

and really wasent drinking then why refuse a breathalizer just cuz you loawyer says so. His lawyer told him not b/c he had been drinking, probibly not drunk, would had blown like .09 or .10 which not impared but still guilty of BWI. Its not like we arent going to waste another year on a position that is the easiest to transition from college to pro’s. what is this year 4? and still cant run effectively. but keeping im as a 2nd or 3rd back will keep depth scince either way if he plays or is released we’ll have to prob take a cap hit.

I don’t have enemies here or hate all of what someone says. I love to hear something interesting and insightful. A lot of times you either rewrite the same thing a thousand times or just write something to be mean. Benson's story may be just that...a story

I just read the ESPN report about what Benson said occurred and what the officers’ said happened. If you read Benson’s story, he said they maced him, kicked his legs out from under him, and put a water hose on him—and he was still “politely” asking why they were doing this. I don’t care who you are, you’re not politely asking why they did that. You’re pissed off. In addition, he said this whole time his family wasn’t able to see it. The boat isn’t that big.

If Benson’s story is true, I’ll apologize to him personally. But there are a number of details that make me question how accurate he is being. Let’s hope this gets figured out without too much of a mess.

by bs1220 on May 5, 2008 4:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

you're missing some details

on am 1000 they had his lawyer on, the officers took him of his boat, onto theirs and took him out of sight of the other boat.

after he took their sobriety test they said they were going to take him back to shore, he said he would rather get taken back to his boat sicne thats where they picked him up, and they then apparently maced him after he said that.

after they kicked the legs out and cuffed him they were spraying him down to the point he wasn’t able to breath, the lawyer said they were borderline warerboarding him

so i am not sure how much cretive editiing was done by espn, but that was the story this morning.

by mike b on May 5, 2008 4:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Think about this

Is he going to be polite if he went through so much? No. That’s a strike against his credibility.

This will obviously be a highly publicized case, are they going to water board him? Probably not, especially if he’s not resisting.

When you’re stopped for DWI or BWI, you don’t have a choice as to where you go. If the cops say you’re going to land, then you’re going to land. That right there tells me he wasn’t thrilled with the cops and he wasn’t really being as polite as he said he was.

I’m still trying to keep an open mind, but his story and character isn’t that strong right now.

telling you what i heard

On the whole Cops have issues and I won’t completely buy or sell that until there is more light shone on this, but I hate to say but I’m going there: He was in TEXAS and he is a black football player. There is a chance that these, most likely white, cops saw that they had stopped a big-name NFL player and decided to break his balls so to speak.

by columbusOHcubsfan on May 6, 2008 5:07 PM CDT   0 recs

I may be biased

since I am a cop, but I don’t believe a word that Benson says about this incident. It is funny to hear people talk about the authority and discretion cops have. People think we can do whatever we want. There is, and always will be, a huge void between cops and those who have not been. To much to explain in this little post but trust me when I say that it is difficult for cops to go beyond their scope of duty. Remember that anything we do has to go through several channels of checks and balances to include: Supervisors (Sgt, Lt, Capt,), Court Liasion, DA, and then the judicial process. There is too much to lose for us to go off on our own ajendas. We love our families and would hate to lose our homes and so forth. The penalty is high for a cop who makes the slightest error, let alone something like violating someone’s civil liberty. Not to mention the scrutiny from the press and Monday morning quarterbacks. You put the badge on and everything changes. Try making it home safe to your family and make everyone happy at the same time. Besides, most of the cops I work with would be a little hesitant to make the 6 o’clock news for “harassing” an innocent NFL player. Just my side…not the gospel!

Go Bears!

by PaxtonMustang on May 7, 2008 6:07 AM CDT   0 recs

Thanks for posting

I think that every county you work for is different. If the guys at the top are racist or have power trips, then they are not going to care if their cops act the same way. You definitely care about your family and job, but not everyone has a family to take care of or thinks logically. Stories about police officers doing the wrong thing are reported on all the time. This wouldn’t be out of the norm. Do I or others think it is a majority of cops? No. But often times there is one or two that are little more outrageous than the rest. I have had my issues with a couple of cops harassing me and I gave them nothing but politeness and courtesy. They just kept going and going. It is an awful feeling to be treated like a criminal when you aren’t that type of person. I’m white and I’ve received a small dose of that treatment. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a racist cop throwing me around or worse.
