Bears Rookie Pool
In case there are still any of you out there trying to figure out the Bears cap situation, the teams slotted rookie pools have been released .
| Team | Picks | Pool |
| KC | 12 | $8,221,790 |
| ATL | 11 | $7,918,670 |
| MIA | 9 | $6,538,400 |
| STL | 8 | $5,997,510 |
| CHI | 12 | $5,791,190 |
I did not know that the rookie pool were adjustable, I had always assumed everybody got the same amount. If you so chose to move up and take 3 first rounders it is up to you to fit them with the money you have.
As it is how much of a pool each team gets is based on how many picks and which rounds those picks came in. The Bears landed at the 5th highest alloted number due to the amount of picks they had.

Good info, but
doesn’t really affect the cap at all. This is just the amount of the cap that they can allocate to rookies and as I said in a previous post one time it can be easily avoided with workout bonuses and stuff like that. So while I think the rookie pool was set up to try to keep salaries down, it doesn’t really work.

Right. It's an attempt to keep rookie salaries down.
Even if K.C. had $20 mil in cap space, they could still only spend $8+ mil total. I think it’s also an attempt to prevent holdouts of top picks. “Oh, you want $3.5 mil your rookie year? Well, we already signed our other picks and that only leaves us with 2.75 left to sign you.”
Of course, it doesn’t work. Escalators, incentives and deferred money make it possible to get around it.

Yeah, this stupid, unless
it is the first step in the CBA and they are hoping to make another step forward in the next CBA. Any agent worth his kahoonas would be able to figure out a way to get the kid the extra money. It doesn’t take a genius to figure it out.

I understand the principle behind
But it falls short. I am sure this is something that will be improved upon in the next CBA. Right now it still is a bit confusing and easy to get around.

The league will likely be pushing for
slotted salaries, so all this would be moot if that happens. I know the players won’t go for it, but it is working out for the NBA, so they will try.

Lets hope the next CBA will include salary slotting
because what they have going on now is backwards. The NFL experienced players need to understand that salary slotting will lead to guaranteed contracts that grow in relation to the experience and production. One of the main reasons Teams dont guarantee contracts today is because of these draftees with huge salaries turn out to be busts; and the only way Teams can recoup that money is to cut veterans. Those signing and workout bonuses are just ways of getting a player guaranteed money, and could be eliminated with a guaranyeed salary; making accounting and team payrolls more above-board and equitable.
