How Much Does Timing Factor Into The NFL?
I believe the Bears can become exhibit #1 for this question as it is clear that timing has affected their roster and offense of the future.
Cedric Benson conveniently got in trouble with the law for the 1st time on May 3rd & the 2nd time this summer in early June. Consequently he was released from the team.
Now, had Benson gotten in trouble PRIOR to the draft, we may be sitting with a different running back. I'm not saying I'm unhappy with Forte as we have yet to see him even practice, BUT one cannot help but wonder how much differently the draft might have gone with Benson gone. Would we have moved up for McFadden? Would we have been trading down for more picks targeting Forte still? Would we have taken Mendenhall over OL Williams? Would we have done the draft the same exact way?
One final question is whether or not the Bears feel comfortable with Peterson, Wolfe, and the ROOKIE Forte as the RB corps for '08? Might they go after a Shaun Alexander or a Kevin Jones? Maybe only TIME will tell...

I think as long as they feel comfortable with Forte
as the starter they are ok with Peterson and Wolfe as backups. I still wouldn’t be surprised if they brought in another guy at least for training camp. If they can’t beat anybody then you dump them, otherwise you might have caught a steal.

the agree
bears brass that peterson/wolfe was good enough last year behind beson, so if they think forte is our starter they might not see the need to add another running back.

The Bears went 7-9 last year
How can they think Wolfe and Peterson were good enough last season?
Who can tell me that Kevin Jones wouldn’t add some DEPTH to this team?

I wish we would go after jones also
but he may be too expensive, and with benson’s cap hit and the amount of money forte is gonna ask for (should be considerably more than he would have if benson werent cut, he knows hes all we got, and any agent woth his salt should be able to drive the price up some) and the bears are not gonna want to tie up so much money in the position.

Until
Chris Williams, Forte, Hester, T.Harris, and maybe Urlacher all sign new deals, I doubt the Bears go after anyone remotely expensive. They will take care of their own first, and then see what’s left over. I don’t necessarily agree with that, but that’s what I think da bears will do.
