Bears and Tommie Harris Agree To Terms!!!
Tommie Harris has signed the largest contract given to a defensive tackle in NFL history.
The Bears and Tommie Harris agree to a 4 year extension worth approximately 40 million dollars through 2012. The deal includes 18 million in guaranteed money and 27 million over the next three years.
The contract is also the richest in Bears history.
This is the biggest off season move the Bears could have made. It was the #1 priority of the Bears as well as fans.
Harris, when healthy, is a dominant tackle who can control the line of scrimmage. The Bears can now shift their attention to signing Devin Hester to a new deal and then figure out what has to be done to make Brian Urlacher happy.

Terrific!
Now if he would just stay healthy for a whole season.

hester
i still don’t understand why we are so gung how to give significant cap space to a kr/pr. On the potential that he coudl be a great wide receiever? we all know what happens when the bears grade offensive talent.

Hester is not just some run-of-the-mill kick returner. Hell, we have plenty of people on our team that fit that bill. Look at Rashied Davis. Devin CHANGES football games. His mere presence on the field ensures excellent field position, even if he doesn’t touch the ball. He’s hit home runs as a KR/PR and he’s hit home runs during his limited time as a Wide Receiver. Although I believe he has enormous potential to be a star WR, he’s worth the money for his contributions on special teams alone.
BTW, I’m ecstatic that we signed Tommie to a long-term deal. He’s a solid player, a hard-worker, and is a stand-up guy…. we need more people like him on the team to resurrect the organization’s image which is shattered after the likes of Tank Johnson and Ced Benson.

do you think he will return 6 kicks a year
for the rest of his career?
they’ll just stop kicking to him.

And we'll still get good field position.
There will be situations where they won’t kick to him, but over the course of a season there will end up being a situation where they feel forced to kick to him.
All I can say is, we just have to wait and see.

is there such a thing as a two hit wonder?

right
and more teams also kicked away from him, and those teams usually won against us. that trend will continue if the bears offense still sucks, or at least it should.
sorry i insulted your boyfriend’s fandom.

Any Bears loss wasn't Hester's fault...
In those games where teams kicked away from Hester and “usually won” (teams usually won against us last year regardless), we had great field position. Hester, whether or not he touches the ball, is invaluable to the special teams unit. Having the ball mid-field every time we go on offense is a great feeling; but as we all know, our offense couldn’t cut it. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t expect much more production from the O this year.

i didn't say it was his faul
but if you’re weapons are not going to get used…
the offense couldn’t be worse this year, so yeah hopefully we’re gettign the good field position one way or another.
it would be nice if he did some ball handeling drills.

My dad says
Devin Hester is wasted on a bad team and we should just trade him. That is crazy talk though, right? Or by your logic I guess he isn’t completely wrong?

no we're not that bad
you keep a guy who can affect the game. you don’t give a guy who can affect the game but can be easily taken out of it a huge contract.
it sounds like people want to pay him big time wr money when he hasn’t shown big time wr skills. yes, he caught some bombs, A LOT of guys have and then were never seen again.
yes devin, thank you for the last couple years, have some money. but don’t break the god damn bank.
although looking at your dad’s point, would a first round pick that got you a tackle or or qb that could dominate for 10+ years be worth it?
would consistent prouction from a player who is on the field 50% of the time be worth not getting the 6 td’s a year and field position?

Then again, one person on either side of the ball isn’t going to necessarily make all the difference in the world. Plus, you never know how a draft pick will turn out. Devin, on the other hand, is one of the few people in football that single handedly turns games. I’m not trying to take anything away from the rest of the special teams unit but, without Devin, they’re not returning 6 kicks back for TDs… and they’re not getting the ball mid-field every change of possession. There’s never been a player quite like Devin so it’s really hard to say what kind of money he’s worth. I can’t really answer that at this time.

well
peyton mannig can singlehandedly turn a game around, he just does it in a way your used to seeing, he give you old school production. walter payton turned the game around the same way. hester is nice to have becasue you get scoring from an unconventional place.
i agree with the draft pick comment, i don’t think you can trade game changers in their prime for picks.

Wise decision by Bears. If Harris stays healthy can anchor defense for years to come.
