Bears Interested In Chris Simms
This one has been brewing for some time now. Each time his name comes up for the Bucs releasing him or trading him, the Bears name pops up. According to the Tampa Tribune the Bears have expressed interest.
We learned last week that Dallas, Chicago and Detroit are interested in Simms. There are plenty more rumors to come, and no matter which team Simms plays for this season, he will be a backup - except in Tampa.
The Bears had to do something. With us not knowing whether Rex Grossman can even complete a full season the Bears cannot roll this season depending on Kyle Orton and whatever rookie they prefer. I would have hoped there was a more dependable and proven QB available, but if Simms is the best name available then so be it.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
Tampa has not given this guy a fair shake. Before his ruptured spleen he was performing very well and deserves another opportunity – I hope it’s with the Bears.

Well... I wouldn't exacty say he was performing very well.
In the first 3 games in 2006 (prior to the injury) he had QB ratings of 30.5, 47.1, and 67.9.
That being said, he still offers potential since he’s basically an unproven QB… and he does have the Simms family pedigree. As a 3rd QB, I’d take him over guys like Leftwich (who failed to lead championship caliber rosters in Jacksonville) and Culpepper (who couldn’t even win real playing time with the QB-less Dolphins and Raiders). At least Simms can still be a project with upside, and his injury wasn’t a knee or shoulder.
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

That Tampa Team
Not so good.
At least the offense anyway. Of all the available QBs – it’s my opinion he is the best fit for the Bears.

Do you think...
Our offense is better?

Last years - Uh - NO!
Hope springs eternal. Look at the White Sox – if you would have told me that Carlos Quenton,
Alexi Rameriz and the whole relief pitcher rotation were going to perform the way they have in April I would have said your nuts.
I don’t think the offensive line had any respect for Benson. And sometimes just a few tweaks and personnel changes make a big difference.
I think it’s only fair to wait until mid October to see if Angelo’s move are correct. Sure criticize – disagree, but reserve final judgment til then.
Besides Simms can’t be any worse than Grossman or Orten – can he????

You take a guy...
Who has never been in our system and give him a month or so to learn it then expect him to perform better than two guys who have been in the system for years? They all have similar weaknesses and they all will share the same weak supporting cast. I don’t think we should spend money on the argument that he can’t be any worse… where does that put us? Like I said in my post on the subject… we should sit tight and give Rexy or NB a chance. I think if we do anything right now we go after a veteran running back or reciever, or we shore up the OL a little. We have to build the foundation before the house.

can you also discount key
injuries to so many of our top defenders and a couple of failed guys in on the frontline?

I don't think...
Pedigree is enough to accurately gauge a players potential… if we bring Simms in then we basically have three unproven quarterbacks on the roster. If pedigree is so important then let’s go get Jarrett Payton. I think we sit tight with what we have… give Rexy or Neck Beard a chance to figure it out… and pick someone up early in the season off of free agency if both step on thier cranks.

Pedigree...
...is what did Simms in at UT. I graduated from there, and his entire attitude in games alwways seemed to be “My Dad is Phil Simms, so I kick ass” – which he did not.
At this point though, PERHAPS he’s gotten over with how impressed he is with himself.
There’s avery real argument I rarely hear: after 3 years and X number of starts, Grossman cannot lock down the job. It’s time to move him and go with Orton. Having Simms there to push them can only be a good thing.

wcg
can i get a raise or something for me beating you to this post and displaying it in the fan post section adjacent to your banger headline.
and uh how many wins out of those 32 regular season starts? and feel free to include the 2 clutch playoff wins as well.
you know i just think you cant overlook the wins in the postseason. That team was supposed to go to the super bowl and they did. that doesnt happen as enough as one might think and in my opinion rex was part of the group that got this franchise over the hump. That should be worth something.

did he regress
or did he improve? i saw improvement after he came back, enough for management to bring him back. To be honest i really dont believe his play early on in the season warranted benching. We were a run based offense that couldnt run. Usually the passing will suffer some in this case. A better sub would have been adrian peterson, given how tough we saw him run in the end of the season. I think his tough style of running would have given the team the “boost” lovie was looking for.

I don't know about Rex's "improvement"....
....and I struggle with your management comment. I get the feeling that Jerry and Lovie sit around and listen to “Don’t Stop Believin” every time they have to make a decision about Rex. I do agree that we couldn’t run the ball at all, but even an average QB should be able to make decent decisions. Problem is, even in the 2006 season, Rex was either hot or cold, you could never get him to be just average.

I'm not trying to sound like a hater...
...but he cannot lock down the job, the way someone like oh David Garrard has. He’s the only NFL QB that has a Good Rex/Bad Rex (as in ‘which one will show up?’) nickname.
He’s too far into his career to be as woefully inconsistent as he has been. Management brought him back because what other options did they leave themselves with in the early off-season when it had to be decided? That point is rather irrelevant IMO.
