Hester Holdout!
The tranquil start to Bears training camp disappeared faster than a Devin Hester touchdown return today when the Bears special teams ace refused to show up for the opening practice in a contract holdout.
Hester did not report to camp on Tuesday night before midnight as players were required to do and missed team meetings this morning, but he officially became a contract holdout with the start of practice at 3 p.m.

Smart move
by Hester and his agent…Bears need him more than he needs the Bears.

true, but...
not exactly. what’s he going to do, sit out for 2 years? it’s not like a franchise tag situation or anything like that where you have a realistic threat.

Sit there and wait for the Bears
to cave…he’s the only legitimate threat to score on offense/ST we have… and they just caved on Urlacher.

Caved?
Urlacher was offered basically the same deal three months ago. He was offered $5M, another year @ $8Mish and then the $1M per year potential bonuses. They basically moved $1M to the front end. Urlacher got an extra $1M now as opposed to 5 years from now. Not a “cave in” by any stretch of the imagination. He wanted two extra years with more guaranteed money. He got very little more of the latter and nothing on the former.

what do you pay him?
he’s the best return man in football….but what else?
he’s not on defense anymore because of his underwhelming performance and on offense he has also shown very little. so what does he want? to be paid like a WR? or to be the best paid special teams player in the league?

He's shown
he can run past everyone in the league….and drop the ball, but I’m sure he’s working on that :)

i think thats the problem,
placing value on hester. he wants to be paid like a number one, but i dont see the bears going that high… at least not yet.

one other thing
i wonder if like many miami stars(including olsen), hester switches to rosenhaus. the guy seems to represent everyone and get them what they want…. for the most part.

Money vs Starting
Hester has really dropped the ball on this one. As of today he was slated to be the starter at wide out and he would rather sit at home and balk about money. Didnt work for benson and it wont work for him. He still has to prove he can be a starting reciever before he gets the big contract. Our recieving corp is loaded with hungry receivers with something to prove. Its arogant of him to believe he can hold out and still win a starting job. He will soon learn that this was the worst thing he could possibly do because the Chicago Bears do not pay ransom

Our receiving corp
is ass….
it’s a little less ass if Hester’s playing. This coming from a guy who thinks Hester isn’t all that great of a receiver in the first place.
they paid Urlacher his ransom, eventually caved to Briggs too (the first time)...

i wouldnt call it ass
they are going to better than you think. they have every type of reciever: tall, slot, fast, hands, potential. the only problem whos going to start where. but i think after a training camp and a preseason, it should become very clear.

Your perception
is ass…...
urlacher got a million a year raise and backloaded 18 hell never reach in a million years. His deal was cosmetic
We let briggs hit the open market and he came home with his tail between his legs taking a previous offer. The first time was a compromise to get him in camp and he had to regain his starting position which was only the start of his being humbled by the front office. We have the shrewdest front office in the league. Hester beware. We will win without you

OTOH, if they do end up paying him starter WR money...
...think they won’t give him every chance to be that?

In my opinion. . .
this story is SO MUCH BIGGER than the Farve-fuckery. We NEED this guy. . .

yea hester needs to start practicing
of course the sooner the better. if he wants top dollar WR money though than he should be whizquizzed. perhaps a structured incentive-based contract would be fine but the bears need a lot of stars aligned this year for them to be successful and this doesn’t help. wonder what the numbers being kicked around between agent/team are? if even 2 of the bears wr can step up and be consistent producers than we will be just fine. if bradley can stay healthy (doubtful) i bet we can actually have a respectable passing game.
