Bears Waive J.D. Runnels

This one caught me off guard.  I recall some decent praise about this guy when we drafted him, but he was injured prior to his rookie season.  Then I didn't hear anything more about him until now.

The Bears have released J.D Runnels the FB out of Oklahoma and one of the guys who blocked for Adrian Peterson while there.

Runnels was let go to make room for Ryan Grice-Mullen.  A wide receiver that went undrafted and was picked up and later released by the Houston Texans.

Grice-Mullen

I like the addition to camp. People say that he’ll have to adjust to a “pro-style” offense coming out of Hawaii, but truthfully if the guy is “an excellent route runner” (see nfldraftcountdown.com scouting report below) to go along with his experience of making on-the-fly reads, he could be a nice addition to the Davis-(?)Hass group that’s competing for a roster spot as a slot receiver, and might make even more sense to have as the 53rd / 45th man than Mark Bradley.

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 187 | 40-Time: 4.52

Strengths:
Has soft, reliable hands…Elusive and runs well after the catch…An excellent route runner…More quick than fast…Good ball skills and will make the amazing catch..A decent blocker..Smart with nice awareness…Tough and fearless…Real productive… Profiles as a prototypical slot receiver at the next level.

Weaknesses:
Height and bulk are just average…Does not have great speed and will struggle to separate from pro corners…Not real explosive and lacks a burst…Isn’t very strong and gets pushed around…A marginal leaper…Has to adjust to a pro style offense.

Good move

I’d rather have a WR who has OK potential of making the team or practice squad, then a FB the team doesn’t need. There’s no way the Bears were going to keep anyone else but McKie. Too many questions elsewhere.

I like the guy...

hopefully he can make something of himself in a Bears uniform.

DEROSA: How did it feel when you're sitting in Baton Rouge and it came across the ticker that Mark DeRosa had just signed to play second base with the Chicago Cubs.

THERIOT: In all honestly, when I saw it, I really felt like punching you right in the mouth and or breaking your leg.

didn't he have a blog or something

on chicagobears.com when he was a rookie last year. i also remember mike ditka saying nice things about him during a preseason game but i never got to see this kid play really. o well if this new pickup can make the team then great.
