Dez Clark on Kellen Davis

Clark being interview by Hub and Lawrence on the SCORE this morning, at training camp. He says they've been really impressed with Kellen Davis since they put the pads on, as Kellen has really opened eyes with his run-blocking. He has been absolutely manhandling people... which was something they didn't see prior to this, since they weren't practicing with pads on during mini-camps and OTAs.

Gentlemen... if this is the case, we may see a good rotation for 2 TE sets this year, to get Davis on the field and open holes in the run game.

If you have been reading

The blog by Larry Mayer on ChicagoBears.com then you would have seen the “TE is deepest position on offense” entry which I thought was very enlightening and true. With two pass catching TEs, one more complete than the other (Dez) and one who is athletic and cause match-up problems (Olson) and then another to rotate in and be a force in the run game, maybe catch some first downs and be a wedge buster on STs (Davis) then wow that is a great TE corp. I hope Davis keeps working and this all works out. Good tight end play could definitely help our weak QBs.

Bold Prediction: Orton will be the starter in week 1.

Perhaps also

had something to do with the Bears parting with Runnels?

The said they've been moving Olsen around quite a bit....

Splitting him wide, and also moving him into the backfield. So, that eliminates the need for a second FB (which they rarely carry on the season roster anyway). Plus, it distributes the practice reps better to players who need it.

Well... I think we all know that TE is our strength

And we’ve all been clamoring since last year to get 2 TEs on the field the majority of the time. I think I read somewhere that last year, they only used the two TE set 22% of the time, but saw a very good success rate in the pass game with it. Compared to the 3 WR set, that was used a majority of the time (likely due to our ineptness and seeing lots of 3rd and longs)... which produced poor results.

As I echo my previous posts in other places… I want to see this team get creative and make the 2TE set and even 3TE sets the main feature of our offense. If we can effectively run and pass out of the formation with decent success, it will make us less predictable, and hopefully force the defense to change personnel . Thus, we may finally be able to dictate the game while getting our best athletes on the field.

The Colts

used alot of 2 TE sets when they had WR injury issues 2 years ago. They had 2 talented TE’s so they used them instead of sticking with 3 WR’s on 3rd downs just because that’s the standard. Having talent on the field was more important then going with a 3rd wide receiver. Of course they did have Manning pulling the trigger too (we obviously don’t). I’d like to see 2 TE sets on some 3rd downs instead of the standard 3WR sets which are commonplace in the NFL. If the opposing defense goes to a nickel defense, you could be looking at a TE matched up on a “small” guy or a slower linebacker. Anything to make the Bears offense less predictable would be a good thing.

Word out of camp today from Zach Zaidman

Kellen Davis is one of the most impressive guys on the field… he is completely standing out among everyone in practice.

Lovie has changed his “We get off the bus running” line, to “When we get off the bus, Kellen Davis gets off first.”

Interviews with Tommie Harris: All I can say is HILARIOUS!

Steal of the draft

I always thought this guy would pan out based on his athleticsm, large frame, good hands and speed. It will definitely bode well for the running game if he’s mauling guys off the line.
