It's a shame we didn't know the O-line sucked
It's officially time for Bears fans to worry about the offensive line this season: Head coach Lovie Smith is starting to make excuses for the inept play of his blockers up front during training camp.
"When they come out in practice," Smith said after Monday's afternoon workout in Bourbonnais, "they're going against a great defensive front. So it can only make us a better team."

Kreutz, Williams still hurt and...
Assuming Williams gets back on the field and proves he is the best option protecting the quarterback's blind side, that would allow St. Clair to slide inside because Terrence Metcalf has no business being atop any team's depth chart. But how much time would St. Clair need to get adjused to guard after spending all of training camp at tackle?
also said Grossman and Orton both had miserable days on Monday...

Fantastic
Not even a week into camp and excuses are flowing like beer in a bar.
Thanks for the update, tho.

Not good
I guess we’re going to need all the help we can get, whether it be from two-TE sets or it’ll be last year all over again. Are we sure there is no one good enough to sign off the street to play guard? (I know people on here keep throwing out Bentley’s name) I think Williams should come back soon, they want to be careful with him and rightly so but at the same time we don’t want him to have to learn entirely in the preseason games.
Bold Prediction: Orton will be the starter in week 1.

"We really like Terrence Metcalf. We feel that Terrence is an important part of our football team."
I’m having flashbacks of “We really like Chad Hutchinson. Chad’s our starter.” Two weeks later… they cut Chad.

You should never believe a single friggin word that comes out of Lovie Smith's mouth
The garbage that this man spits out on a daily basis is just as embarrassing as his grasp of offense.
The man flipped a friggin coin to decide which QB would start with the 1st team.

coin flips..
... are actually pretty normal practice in similar situations.
If they are both considered even at this point, something like a coin flip is the “fairest” way to decide who gets the first shot with the first team.
If you need to resort to that for criticism, you don’t have much to criticize.

THANK YOU
With that dumbass Lovie and Turner heading our offense, we are going to have the same season as ast year unless Forte becomes who we hope he will. Because you know Lovie likes to inform opponents of our game plan every week….:we’re coming off the bus running, by the way we don’t have a proven back or strong o-line. But hey, we’re coming off the bus running. You know what, I wish a bus would just run him over.

In case my point wasn't obvious...
the Bears cure to fix the biggest problem with the team last season was to draft a mid-first round rookie at arguably the toughest O-line position and expect him to step right in.

And they drafted
The player many scouts believed to be the least ready to start right away. SHARD!

not sure about that...
compared to Cherilus, Otah and Albert, I think he was as ready as any of them from what I read…for example from scout.com:
Big, athletic, and NFL-ready as a pass protector right now, Williams has all the tools to be a dominant left tackle for the next decade. Although he needs to get a little nastier on the ground and lacks that classic mean streak you like to see in the trenches, he has tremendous physical tools and shows excellent technique against smaller and faster defenders out in space.
nonetheless, I’m not bashing Williams or the idea of picking an O-lineman there, but the fact that it was the only thing they did to try and improve the O-line.

what about
moving john tait to his natural right side and releasing the weak link miller and the aging r.brown.
what else do want them to do…release the two best players on the line, kreutz and garza.
and what about joe thomas and the browns?.... it worked out pretty well for them last year.
patience my friend… we havent even seen a game yet and just because some guy named john doesnt like what he sees doesnt mean shit. There is talent on this team and it will take some time for them to gel.
the biggest thing for an oline is continuity…. they havent even all been together for a practice yet leave alone a game.

honest question
did you have them penciled in for nfc championship game at the start of last year?
by mike b on Jul 29, 2008 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i never pencil
any team in during training camp. its a contact sport, shit happens.

right
they did release some dead weight to allow players who weren’t good enough last year to get more playing time.

comparing Joe Thomas
to Chris Williams is a bit silly…if we had gotten Jake Long you might be on to something…

Not Really
If I remember correctly the draft experts said that Williams was the most natural left tackle in the draft which included Jake Long. And he was 1st team SEC which is the best conference in college football. He probably wont be as good as Joe Thomas but don’t just flat out say he s crap before you have even seen him play in a game

Where
in his post does it say that Williams is “crap”?

Yes
but you forget to include the fact that he was a top 3 pick and was expected to do good while Williams is somewhat of an unknown. And it’s not like adding Thomas was the only thing the Browns did to improve their o-line, the also added Steinbach and moved Shaeffer to RT.
I think many people were surprised about how good the Browns were last season, but many weren’t surprised about how good their o-line played considering how much they improved.

thomas was supposed to be great immediately
but i don’t remember hearing many people who said williams wouldn’t be a very good LT.

It's not the fact
that Williams may/may not be a good OT, it’s the fact the only thing we did to upgrade our o-line was to draft him. The Browns added more than just Thomas to make their o-line better.

How hard is it to find someone better then Metcalf?
I mean… seriously. You can sign 3 UDFAs off the street, and probably one of them would beat out Metcalf.
That being said, if Beekman or Barton doesn’t win a job over him, you have to really wonder what the heck the Bears scouting dept is doing on offense.

what a bunch of whiners.
OL is a unique position in football in th all 5 guys need to develop a playing chemistry with each other to play well as a unit.
They have had exactly ONE practice as a unit, and NONE at the time of this writing.
Can we reserve the whining for at least the second preseason game? Y’know, when they actually have something to BLOCK?

Bunch of girls
One week into training camp and you people are already bashing the Bears for picking Williams. So when he comes back to win the job, are all of you going to “eat” your words and apologize for wasting space?
by propheteer on Jul 31, 2008 6:58 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Where did that come from?
I sure never “bashed” Williams, I think he was the best pick at that spot.
I bashed the Bears brain trust for thinking his addition would save the offensive line. And Williams winning a job that has been handed to him, isn’t really much of an accomplishment, especially considering the (lack of) competition he’s facing.
