Chris Williams Return Date
By the time November 2nd rolls around hopefully we aren't so bad at offensive line that we have to rush him back in, but on that date the Bears are currently shooting for for a possible return of Chris Williams
Without most of training camp and no game time, Williams might be of little help regardless.
Doctors told Williams after Wednesday's surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back that he should expect to be out 10 to 12 weeks, a source said Friday. That would make the Nov. 2 game against the Lions in Week 9 the earliest date Williams could contribute to the Bears offensive line—if he contributes at all.
The remaining question is whether the Bears keep him on the active roster or just shut him down for the season and place him on injured reserve.

I would imagine
that the Bear’s would put him on the PUP list, right?

nope
PUP isn’t an option for him. Once a player begins the preseason on the active roster, he can’t be put on the PUP. So either he stays on the regular roster, or else they put him on IR for the year.
As to which is the better choice, I can’t really say. Clearly even if he comes back he probably won’t be 100%, but getting him a half dozen games of game experience this year wouldn’t be a bad thing, IMO.

I hope for everyone's sake...
...that they shut him down, let him grasp the offense a full year, and then take the field in the ‘09 season. If they rush him back, he could get hurt again or suck. I’d rather just wait another year.

Yay?
I became half-way disinterested in this season when they did a half-assed rebuilding effort (you know, not addressing the two biggest positions of need—QB and OL), and now I’m even less interested. Ugh.

No brainer
If he can make it back to play nearly half the season it’s worth leaving him on the active roster. Experience and confidence can do a lot to a young player as long as he’s healthy.

hah
what’ll make this even worse is if mendenhall has anything resembling a decent rookie season. at least maybe this will take a little bit of heat off the qb position for like…2 or 3 days at the most i suppose.
as far as williams go, i say sit him, let him get healthy, don’t IR him, let him play the last 4 games of the season to get a little in game experience in the nfl.

He takes up a valuable roster spot....
for a team that has no idea who to keep at WR… err, let me re-phrase that: for a team that has no idea if they have a WR on the roster.
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

so?
having 5 shitty receivers is the same as having 6 shitty receivers. williams is more valuable to this franchise than a shitty 6th receiver so you keep him active to get him what playing time/experience you can this year.

And what happens if he gets hurt after coming back?
God knows there’s probably another pre-existing condition we don’t know about…

A blessing in disguise...
considering that the starting Right Defensive Ends for our first 3 games are Dwight Freeney, Julius Peppers, and Gaines Adams, I think it kinda works out well for Chris.
To have those games start your career would be a nightmare. He won’t have to worry about being declared a bust in week 2 for not playing like Orlando Pace or John Runyan right off the bat against the best two DE’s in the league.
This way he will start his career against the Lions, which is as close to training wheels as you can get. Next is a 32 year old Jevon Kearse. He’ll get to play against a player with top form but has lost some of the pure physicality. Then the Packers, who aren’t a big threat at RE, then The Rams, with Chris Long being the opposite of Jevon Kearse (all the strength and speed but lacking in developed form). Then (presumably Jared Allen) for the Vikes. That will be his first REAL challenge.
Much better so have your first REAL challenge be in your 5th game instead of your first.
Not to mention, many would argue that freeney is the best in the league, and those who don’t probably thing Peppers is #1. Show me another LT who had to start his career against the best two DE’s in the league.
