2008 Draft Pick Evaluations
I'd like to get people's opinions about this year's draft class.
1st: Chris Williams-who know at this point?
2nd: Forte-looks real good, starter.
3rd: Earl Bennett-looks OK, nice catch last night, how come he can't get higher on this sorry WR depth chart?
3rd: Marcus Harrison-also good, will be in tackle rotation.
4th: Craig Steltz-eh, doesn't look like he'll see the field all that much. Has he done much on special teams?
5th: Zack Bowman-looked pretty good last night, probably 5th CB on the roster, won't see the field all that much unless injuries hit. Anyone else see anything here?
5th: Kellen Davis-nice pick. Looks pretty good, will be 3rd tight end.
7th: Ervin Baldwin-saw him on the field, no real impact. Scout team probably?
7th: Chester Adams-don't know?
7th: Joey Laroque-we got lots of LB's, practice squad I guess?
7th: Kirk Barton-I've heard good things, anyone else know of anything solid on him? If Fred Miller signs, will this mean he loses a roster spot?
7th: Marcus Monk-cut and signed by NY Giants.

recap
The guys that at least early and from what has been said that the Bears really like what they see are:
Matt Forte
Kellen Davis
Earl Bennett
Marcus Harrison
Steltz hasn’t look great, but I think the Bears keep him. They really liked him as did a lot of us going into the draft, so they will likely give him a little more time. Besides we need the depth at safety.
Bowman has played very well when on the field during preseason, so he sticks around.

What do you think of undrafted rookie free agent Joe Clermond
He made some good plays last night, probably headed to the practice squad.

Leanord Peters has way outplayed Steltz this preseason, but I bet Peters is cut because of space.

Steltz will be kept
because of what he was thought of and his draft position.

Steltz played solid in preseason
steltz wasn’t spectacular but made special teams plays and had a lot of tackles during the preseason. Steltz is 22 years old and Peters will be 27 during the season. When you look at a third string safety you take the 4th round pick at 22 and assume he will get better, rather than a soon to be 27 year old free agent who played well in the last preseason game but didn’t do much before that.

As a WR I wouldn't say Bennet has looked good.
He had some good punt returns, but Bennet has dropped multiple passes. He’s in though do to being a third pick and likely will get better, but he hasn’t looked good at WR to me.

Bennett
I think he will eventually be a good WR for us, but sometimes Lovie and Co. make decisions that aren’t necessarily the correct ones. Granted, he is a rookie, but he should be ranked a little higher.
Otherwise, I’ve been impressed by Forte, Davis, and Harrison. Steltz doesn’t tackle well, which brought the downfall of the man whose number Steltz inherited (Adam Archuleta).

Just judging from what I've seen (and I didn't see every minute of the preseason),
I’d put Kellen Davis at the top of my list.
I like him enough to try to split Greg Olson out wide.
Defenses would have a hell of a time trying to cover both those guys at the same time. Plus, with both of them on the field, the Bears would have enough blocking to still attempt to run the ball.
Forte really hasn’t shown me anything more than competence so far…which, admittedly, would be a huge upgrade over last year at the positon.
I saw Marcus Harrison make a play. But I also saw Dust D make a play. (And Israel Id, who, in a Big Cat Williams sort of a deal, I’d like to see moved to offensive tackle).
I agree they have to keep Steltz—for depth plus his draft number.
From what I’ve seen, the player who had the worst preseason was Mike Brown. Maybe they should turn him into a full-time coach and motivator…he doesn’t seem to have it anymore on the field.

good thoughts!
I think the idea of moving Olsen wide is good, but in the end they will only play Davis significantly if clark is injured. The next year they will not resign Clark (31 years old 32 next year) and will go with Olsen and davis into the future. I agree about Brown also he did nothing in the pre season and looked lost in coverage. He looked like he didn’t want to hit anybody cause he was afraid to get injured! Dusty Dvorcek only played 2 series in the preseason, but he stuffed the first down run at the goal line and then his penetration caused the play to go wider than designed on second down and then he sacked the QB on third down! haven’t seen him sense can only guess they are holding him off till the regular season.
Forte also looks like a 3 or 4 yard a play guy, I haven’t seen a burst that shows me he will be a special back.

I'd still take....
Brohm, Charles and Caldwell over Forte, Bennet and Harrison.
I mean, as long as the top pick is injured pre-season, they all might as well be.

You still
like Brohm? He has looked horrid so far. I was big on taking him as well, but i’m not so sure now.
Forte has looked ordinary. I’d like to seem some flashes of excitement from a 2nd round RB, and I haven’t seen that. Earl Bennett should be higher on the depth chart considering how bad our WRs are. His lack of playing time at WR is telling. Steltz looks like a wasted pick so far.
Personally, I’d rather have had the Bears trade up 2 spots to take Clady, take Brohm in the 2nd and a RB later on. Also, the Bears seemed to say that every defensive player they took had first round talent. They didn’t say that about their offensive picks. I’d like to see them find some interior lineman with first round talent later in the draft.
I hate Jerry Angelo. He is ruining this team.

Wait a minute
First you say that you’re iffy on Brohm because he’s looked horrible, and then you said you wanted the Bears to trade up to get Clady, then get Brohm in the second? Do you want to clarify that?
Second thing….this is the preseason bro. Yes, you can tell some things in the preseason. But you know as well as I that our OL isn’t that great. The new AP couldn’t do what he’s doing behind our OL.

I like what I see from
Forte and Davis. Most of the rest of them the jury is still out on. I think Bennett will end up getting a lot of unnecessary game reps because of his draft position. He will come into his own he will need more time though (kind of like Berrian) and the same goes for Steltz, a season or so of seasoning on STs he can become a better tackler and learn the defense and be a good reserve or maybe starter down the road.
Fire Angelo!!
