Simms Released by TB

Props to northsideguy, who pointed this one out.

Chris Simms has been released by Tampa Bay. It comes as somewhat of a shock, because there was no indication that Gruden was placing feelers out in terms of Simms' trade value.

Now that it's a legitimate issue:

I want Simms, but not if Hanie has to be released.

No. I'm satisfied with Hanie as a 3rd-string QB.

No. Simms offers nothing to the Bears.

Yes

but only is Hanie stays. Who knows how long it would take Simms to be ready, and that is if the Bears ever had any interest in starting him. His future with the team would only be through the season unless he puts up a great season. Hanie could actually be here in the future, so there is no point in losing him if Simms isn’t going to have an impact.

Agreed 100%

I would be irate if they got rid of Hanie and picked up Simms.

What about

Simms coming in and Grossman going out? Would that be okay or would you like to keep him as well? I’m not sure who they’d be willing to cut to add him, and it’d be interesting having four QB’s.

I'd be ok with Grossman going and Simms coming

I was the biggest anti-Rex person out there, but he doesn’t deserved to get booed during preseason games when it’s been announced that he’s the 2nd string. He deserves a fresh start.

He

does deserve a fresh start, I agree.

Would've been a decent trade

But, hopefully we can find a way to ship Rex off somewhere fresh.

Yeah

I think that would be another postive in making the switch. He can’t be happy in the backup role and maybe being somewhere else would help him.

It's well documented he's not

The “QB controversy” wasn’t anything. It was simply a public announcement to dupe us into thinking there was a QB battle. Orton was Lovie’s guy, and he knew that his approval rating would go to 5% if he picked Rex.

I'm as big of a Rex supporter as there is...

…and even I’d prefer to have Rex cut if we do sign Simms.

If the Bears dont sign Simms

I might just give up my fandom. Its like there not trying to get better on offense, this is a no-brainer.

No.

He’s always had an over inflated sense of entitlement because he’s 6’5" and his last name is Simms, going all the way back to his days at UT.

At this point, he’s at best no better than Grossman, who if he replaced would bring in locker room turmoil because I’d be willing to bet dollars to donuts that even if he said he’d be fine backing up Orton he’d rock the boat. That’s who he is. A complainer on the bench.

He was given every chance to succeed at UT by Mack Brown, even to the detriment of the team in benching the better QB at the time in Major Applewhite.

He offers no upside to what we already have, and would not be a fit in the locker room that Grossman and Orton already do. We’re set for 2008 right now and if we’re no better off after the season, we know Grossman is gone and the McNabb to Chicago rumors will be back in full force – especially if Philly misses the playoffs.

Let the games begin.

Besides the obvious - Go Irish.

Z. He doesn't need an exclamation point. He is one.

He offers no upside to what we already have,

i agree. correct me if i’m wrong as i haven’t paid much attention to Tampa, but didn’t they keep Greise over Simms? if so, enough said.

a little different situations

considering simms has been in a rift with gruden and upper management for quite some time now after the way they handled his spleen injury.

simms has a little upside. i wouldn’t mind bringing him in, especially if they wanna pass hanie thru waivers and put him on the practice squad. i know hanie is quickly becoming a fan favorite, but i really doubt any other teams would claim him to be their #3 qb considering no one felt the need to sign him after the draft.
