Chicago Bears Fantasy Sleeper and Stud

Our fantasy site, Fake Teams, is putting together all NFL team's fantasy sleeper and stud.

It is hard to pick a fantasy stud from the Chicago Bears roster, especially given the roster of new starters they will be fielding.  That makes the Bears best fantasy option their D/ST.

True, they haven't looked their best in preseason, but they have loads of talent.  Starting with the likes of Brian Urlacher and Tommie Harris, but continuing to guys like Lance Briggs, Alex Brown, Adewale Ogunleye.  That even extends out to the secondary where Charles Tillman, Nathan Vashar and Mike Brown are all always around a loose ball.  With the type of defense the Bears play, it is not predicated on stopping an offense.  It has a high emphasis on takeaways and the big play.  Even in the Bears best years they were vulnerable between the 20s, but they always hung tough in the Red Zone.  The longer the opposing team is on the field the more opportunities they have to get those takeaways.

All that and I haven't even touched the best special teams in the league.  Special teams coaches around the league are having nightmares.  Those nightmares of course start with Devin Hester.  Hester is 4 kickoff return TDs from holding the record for most in history and he is just going into his 3rd year.  Hester's role should decrease a little with his new wide receiver status, but not too much if the coaches are smart.  You'd think when Hester is getting a breather, teams would be salivating, but don't get your hopes up.  Hester fill ins, Danieal Manning, Garrett Wolfe and Earl Bennett have all shown the ability to pick up big yards.

So I know you are all eagerly awaiting the Bears sleeper pick and you might laugh at first, but give me a few sentences to lay it out.  The sleeper pick is Kyle Orton.  The biggest thing that Kyle Orton brings is the ability to not make the mistake.  He has better pocket presence and does not get rattled like his predecessor, Rex Grossman.  The biggest knock is he has no arm and while he has a bigger arm than most give him credit for, does it matter?  With the return team the Bears bring to the game the Bears are playing on a 50-yard field.  On that length a 30 yard pass play is a bomb and Orton has very good touch at that distance.  While no one receivers is going to scare you the Bears do have tons of options.  Hester, Bradley and Lloyd all bring speed.  The Bears now have one of the deepest tight end corps with Desmond Clark, Greg Olsen and rookie Kellen Davis.  Marty Booker brings you the experience.  It is not far fetched that Orton could be a solid back up QB on your fantasy team.  Games of 250 yards and 2 TDs are not wild imagination any longer on this team.

2nd Opinion:  While we still don't know who the Bears starting receivers are going to be, Orton already has his favorite.  Going back to their playing days in the second string, Kyle Orton and Rashied Davis are playing catch out there.  They read each other very well and until Orton gets used to his new set of receivers Davis could be his main target.

Cowboys Fan wants to know..

Why dont yall try and sign Rudi Johnson and Joe Horn seems like yall are hurting with those 2 positions?

All warfare is based on deception.

We have 6 WR we are keeping and Joe Horn is high priced and old.

We feel very comfortable with Forte/Jones/Wolfe adding receptions out of the backfield and also that our TE tandem makes for more receiving threats with Olsen/Clark. We believe we have the best TE combo (actually trio if you count rookie Kellen Davis). Now sure you are going to say what about WR. For one we are already through camp which puts Horn behind the ball a little. Second we have probably 4 young guys that we believe are in position to step up and break out Bradley/Hester/Davis/Bennett. The Bears feel fine with veteran safety nets of Booker/Lloyd and also Dez Clark. Basically at receiving they are taking a risk on some young guys and want to give them a chance to step up. Rashied Davis and Brandon Lloyd have looked excellent in the preseason.

As far as Rudi Johnson goes, that may have been an option before signing Kevin Jones, but I think they like Kevin Jones upside. The guys is still very young and looks healthy. Forte has done well at RB so far and looks to be a good pick this year and the first AP is always a great safety net. Johnson is not necessary. They are also carrying Wolfe on the roster which is basically them not conceding that he was a bad pick.

Money is another reason for both. Horn and Johnson will want at least a couple mil each and they are trying to be thrifty. The real need for this team at this point is bringing in a tackle like Willie Anderson from Cincy.

Most Bears fans are now less concerned with WR and RB. Much of that seems to be patched well enough. We are most concerned with blocking and possibly QB play, but are somewhat optimistic that blocking will allow our QB’s to play well enough to win.

Sorry it sounded like we though 4 guys would have break out years.

What I meant was that 4 guys have a shot to have a break out year. That means the possibility is there and the management is most likely hoping one will rise up and excel. They all have different skills, but could surprise as a go to guy. Personally Rashied Davis is a player most outside of Chicago don’t know, but I believe could be the guy that emerges. Lloyd has looked phenomenal as well which is typical when it doesn’t count. Hopefully this will be the year he puts it all together.

Good Article

You don’t write many write ups like this, but is was well done. I also would say that Kevin Jones could be a sleeper. No one drafted him in my 10 team draft and I think it is reasonable to think he could get 10 carries a game early and if he did well could take over the starting role.

Kyle Orton is not a Fantasy Sleeper

Fantasy revolves around guys who can make plays, not guys who screw up the least. If Grossman were the QB you could have him as a sleeper because his potential to air the ball out and get some yards, Orton is going to average around 150-200 yards passing, that doesn’t do a whole lot for fantasy. I’m staying FAR away from any Bears offensive players this year and i’ll probably avoid the defense as well. The only fantasy relevant player is Robbie Gould. So sad.

Sorry buddy

Rex isn’t a sleeper either. 150-200 yards passing might not get it done in fantasy, but neither will 3 INT’s and 2 lost fumbles.

Your stats for Orton are also two years old.

If you saw how they used Orton at the end of last year and all during the preseason, they will take their shots down the field and you will see lots of plays over the middle for 10-15 yard passes. The guy will be much better than he was in 2005. Also, you have to think about how many jump ball touchdowns are going to be thrown to Olsen.

great post

and well said.

i think your orton point is valid, in the sense is arm strength will likely be adequate given the field position we seem to get with hester and takeaways.

i dont know about fantasy team but i look for robbie gould and brad maynard to play a huge role with this team again. if they can keep pinning teams inside the twenty, i believe our d has the advantage to force pressure and eventually takeaways.
