Williams has surgery (possibly lost for season?)
Brutal news if true. We really have to assess our scouting skills if true. You waste a #14 pick on a guy with a bad back?
From rotoworld:
Bears first-round LT Chris Williams underwent surgery Thursday to repair a herniated disc in his back.
Profootballtalk.com is hearing rumors that Williams may be lost for the year. John St. Clair, who's resembled a swinging gate in past starting chances, will likely start at Indianapolis in the season opener. Assuming he's healthy, Colts RE Dwight Freeney (foot) should be licking his chops
From the Sun Times:
The organization that has had three first-day draft picks spend their entire rookie season on injured reserve over the last two season has had another serious injury.
First-round draft pick Chris Williams has had surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back. The plan is to keep him on the 53-man roster at this point, but when the offensive tackle will be able to return, no one can say.
The Bears are considering adding a veteran, including ex-Bear Fred Miller, and have already cleared a roster spot by placing running back Matt Lawrence on injured reserve.
The Bears are comparing the situation to what cornerback Charles Tillman underwent last season. Tillman had surgery following Super Bowl XLI to repair a herniated disc. That surgery happened in February and he was not cleared to fully return to drills until June.
If Williams follows a similar timetable, his chances of playing this season would have to be considered slim. Tillman is a cornerback. As a lineman, Williams is taking pounding on every play.
Williams was injured July 24 in the second practice of training camp, a non-contact drill. The team said it was a muscular issue but when that issue calmed down, they detected the disc issue. Team physician Mark Bowen and Dr. Srdjan Morkovic performed the surgery late Wednesday night.

And I was mocked
for suggesting it might be a bad idea to throw all your eggs into the Chris Williams will fix the O-line basket.
Did Andy McPhail start running the Bears?
I do wish him a speedy recovery and do think he was the right pick, but damn, just dumb beyond dumb to count on one rookie to fix a mess of a situation.

I have to disagree
about the right pick part. He already had question marks about his back going into the draft. Plus they could’ve taken Clady if they moved up 2 spots.
But you are right, the biggest problem was doing nothing in free agency to fix the swiss cheese offensive line.
DEJESUS!!!
wow
fucking idiots considering this was reported on draft day.
Yeah I know
I remember saying that on the draft day thread and then everybody got mad at me. Well, goes to show you that I’m always right.
Except about Grossman. That turned out really bad.
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad
Trading Down
always seemed like the best option once Clady came off the board. Even if you would lose some value, there would be much less of a bust factor and a better chance that one of the two lower picks would turn out good.
Also, a herniated disc is not a good thing for a O-Lineman. Just think of the abuse their backs and knees go through. There is probably a 50/50 chance that he never plays a down in the NFL now. Great low risk pick.
The solution...

What’s that smell?
Desperation you say?

i'm trying to decide
right now if i think they win a game before atlanta…unless something big changes or they are hiding something…
I hate
Angelo. Guy can’t make a first round pick to save his life. Could’ve traded up 2 spots and taken Clady, but he’d got no nuts to trade up. Nice safe pick.
We are so fucked. Hope there is a top 5 pick next year who can play qb, wr and every offensive line position (all at once).
DEJESUS!!!
Mortal lock
Mortal lock is that pick is Tim Tebow.
I doubt that works out, but that’s your pick…

i've been making that joke since the last draft
i bet they do.
Why do we even bother to draft offense?
We miss 9 times out of 10. It’s absolutely pathetic.
Seriously… hire someone who knows the the F they’re doing when it comes to offense.

I'm having visions...
...of Marc Colombo for some reason.
sigh I have a feeling it’s gonna be another long, long year for the Bears.

Jackass
I feel like one since I said the Bears were right to pick Williams over Mendenhall. Shame on me. I feel like kicking myself now.

"Again" ?????
That would assume that we once had a good offense before?

I can go 20 years.... and still see crap.
But , for the record: this is the team that founded the NFL… that invented the QB position (Luckman), that invented the LB position (George), and that invented the TE position (Ditka).
The only thing we’ve invented since is the 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense.

Well, to be fair
We’ve invented the fantastic defense/ST to pair with the dust offense.
Problem is, that dust offense is worse than useless. In reality, our defense IS our offense. If they score, we win. I don’t even know why we bother sending the O out.

Sporadic, but a few good years
The Bears had a decent offense (feast or famine for most of the season) two years ago. Was it ‘03 when Jim Miller put up some good numbers in Gary Crowton’s offense? Another better than average performance with Conway and Graham at either WR positions. Then there was Turner’s first go around with the Bears where Erik Kramer had an amazing year. Before that it was Sweetness and the shufflin’ crew.

still trying to figure out
how turner is suposed to do anything with this personnel.
