Chicago Bears Vs. Carolina Panthers - Preview
The Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers are both are coming off wins against two of the favorites to win the Super Bowl last week by defeating the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego respectively.
Heading into this week's matchup, both teams are waiting to see if what they saw last week was a fluke or what these teams are going to look like. The Panthers found an unexpected source of offense in TE Dante Rosario. The Bears found a run game they were hoping to have, but were not sure they would. Running behind a surprisingly solid line, rookie Matt Forte chewed up yards on the ground and kept the Bears offense moving down the field.
Neither team suffered any big loses last week that will affect the way they line up this week. The player who will affect this game the most with his absence is Steve Smith, who is serving the 2nd and last week of his suspension for slugging it out with a teammate.

Lovie says....
that Forte sat out practice today with a sore ankle.
Matt Forte denies any ankle problem, and says… his body was still sore all over, and he was resting up for Sunday’s game.
SackMan says…. Lovie needs to shut the F up. Why the hell did Captain Vague all of the sudden tell the media his new star RB has an ankle problem? Hey Lovie, shut the F up.

Because he probably made that up.
Lovie, that is. Which is why Forte denied. The New England Patriots spin machine the Bears are not.
Chris Harris' revenge
Why didn’t Lovie Smith keep Chris Harris? I don’t get it. He taught him how to be a defensive threat then traded him for only a 5th round pick? Then last year Chicago becomes weak at Safety, and Harris goes on to lead the league in forced fumbles. Now one of the leagues most dangerous safeties is out to get revenge on his former team. Lovie is obviously a great defensive coach (not so much offensively), but why prep these guys to the benefit of other teams? Please explain this to me.

Because Lovie brought in his bed buddy, Adam Archuletta...
And forced a numbers game at safety.

It's Simple
Repeated missed tackles. Repeated unsound fundamentals.
He’s gone – get over it!
"The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt." - Bertrand Russell
"one of the leagues most dangerous safeties"
I don’t think so. Although Lovie Smith is all about forcing turnovers, I’d much rather have a defense that flat out shuts offenses down. Harris will force fumbles, and he probably has Lovie to thank for that, but as a safety you are the last line of protection and you need to be solid in coverage, especially in the cover two. Carolina’s pass defense wasn’t too good last year and while I am not saying that the Bears would have no room for a guy like Chris Harris, it’s not as if he would be that good for us when you consider what our base defense is.
coverage
Good point. that’s why the Panthers stole Godfrey in the draft. Now they have a safety that can cover, and another who is one of the hardest hitters in the NFL. Plus Fox is more about stopping the run, and they have 3 really good corners.

Stats
The stats above seem to favor the Panthers, unless they rely too much on running the ball, which Coach Fox often does. The bears were stout against the run, but gave up a lot through the air. Looks like Fox should make use of his blossoming TE, and the revengeful Muhammad. DJ Hackett could have a big day too.
Carolinas defense favors the run too. So to win Chicago might need to air it out. I’m just not sure Kyle is capable of that. This could be a slow ground game. The defenses might decide the outcome… which I am sad to say slightly favors the Bears.

That stats above seem to favor nobody, being that you cannot take much of anything from the stats of one game.

SAMPLE SIZE!
Big Low calls out sample size (100% correctly, of course)
Color me not shocked.
I f'ing hate Jake Del Homme
Fuck him. Ever since he acted like a 11-year old girl during the playoff game I absolutely f’ing hate him. URLACHER – BEAT HIS ASS!
Watching, right now, a live Pearl Jam concert at Soldier in 1995. Wow – much to love in that.
Wait – EFFING EFF JAKE DELHOMME!

Del-Homey
Jake is a passionate guy, and the team, coaches and fans love him. He has 14 4th quarter comebacks. In the last 6 years has been to just as many NFC Championships as McNabb and Peyton Manning… only Tom Brady has been to more. You probably just hate him because he beat you in that playoff game.

We hate him because he danced around like a little girl
we don’t trash Steve “Larry Holmes” Smith who was the real reason you won that game.
Indeed,
I knew you’d have my back. Not that hard for Del Homme to win that game – just throw it to Steve Smith and let him do all the work.

sounds like you all have QB envy… Probably cause you don’t have a QB

14 4th Q comebacks, huh?
Then why’d he celebrate in that game like he’d never been there before? Not only did he jump around, but IIRC he also did some cheezy-ass ‘six shooter’ celebration or something similar. What a dork

i'm pretty sure it was the macarena
at least that’s how i remember it.
I did the macarena once ...
of course, it was way back when I was in college and I had consumed 10 too many tequilla shots. What was his excuse?

...o...k...
i think the bears corners can handle the panther WRs man to man. i’m hoping they stack the box and bring a ton of pressure. Tillman and Vasher can stick to their guys till the pressure gets to Delhomme. maybe go cover 1, let Tillman handle Moose and give Vash some help. they have a good ground game but their WRs are lacking so i think we can handle them. on O i too think it’ll hang on Orton’s shoulders. hopefully he’ll audible out of RTs runs up the gut when Carolina has 8 men there avoid 3rd and longs.
Agreed
On a slightly different not, why don’t Tillman and Vasher get mentioned when it comes to the best corner duos in the league? PFW had Tillman ranked pretty low and Vasher didn’t even crack the top thirty? I don’t get it. Peanut is one of the better “big” corner’s in the league and Vasher does a good all around job, last week non-withstanding.
Well... I'd have to think they don't get the recognition
because we are labeled as being a Cover 2 team… meaning, we play zone.
Vasher’s been to one Pro-Bowl… I think Tillman has had some pro-bowl caliber seasons, but hasn’t gotten the nod.

No way
If San Diego can’t handle Carolinas receivers than neither can Chicago. Their new TE, Rosario, has looked incredible in the preseason and 1st week, and they have a revamped, huge OLine, that has looked very good. Some analyst have said Rosario will be a future star. In addition to Muhammad they also have DJ Hackett, who when healthy was Seattle’s most productive receiver. Stacking the box and playing man-to-man on Muhammad and Hackett would be way too dangerous! Rosario would have a field day like he did against the Chargers.

We handled the Colts receivers just fine. Don't pretend your team compares.
Muhammad? Hackett? Yeah, sorry, but your receivers blow.
Let's also not forget...
…that the Bears have two of the better coverage-LB’s in the game in Urlacher and Briggs—Briggs being the best according to Football outsiders—and it only being Week 2 so Urlacher isn’t hurt or slowed by a stiff back yet.
Their TE might “do something” as in a big catch or two at a crucial moment (anything can happen), but he won’t have a huge day in terms of No. of catches.
This is football,
and A>B and A=C therefore C>B doesn’t work here. Some analysts have also said a lot of things. Carolina could very well win the game, but it will have nothing to do with the talent of San Diego’s CB’s. Also, don’t throw Moose out there as a legit receiver. He stinks, and thats not even the worst part about him. That would be that he doesn’t even know how bad/old/slow/sucky he is. Your QB is pretty good, but he is throwing to second and third rate pass catchers.
I agree with bufordht
on the D gameplan, we will not be able to run the ball like last week which means Orton will have to convert some 3rd and longs. Close, physical, field position game. Unfortunately, I was completely wrong about Chris Harris when he was here . . . he has turned out to be a fine player.
Hey does anyone remember the last regular season game aginst
Carolina?
The one where we had like 8 sacks on Delhomme.
Our defense was beastly
And who was our QB?
Oh ya Kyle
=)
Playoffs
And then the Bears got cocky, and what happened in the playoffs that year?
I guess you implying that Orton is your key to success? You are on an island with that one.

Here kitty, kitty, kitty
Here kitty, kitty, kitty
if not kidding, then kinda tongue in cheek
i don’t really think that he thinks that Orton is the key to beating the Panthers.
he wasn’t kidding. Chicago fans are the only fans who don’t respect Jake. It’s because he ruined your playoffs that year. And because you are envious due to the lack of quality QB play in Chicago over the years

Chicago fans??
First off, how do you know he wasn’t kidding? Second, way to generalize! If by Chicago fans you mean the few members who have made fun of Delhomme, most likely in a playful manner, than fine, but don’t go out and throw out blanket statements like that.
I would also like to add that while Delhomme has had a solid career, he has never registered a QB rating over 88.1 in any season in which he starter more than four games. He’s a solid QB and I would like to have him here in Chicago, but he isn’t nearly as good as you talk him up to be. I’d rather have a QB who can put a game away in the first half instead of the fourth quarter. Just saying…
I was impressed by the Bears last weekend
hopefully they can repeat their magic from last Sunday for tomorrow’s game against the Panthers.
2008 Cubs: Who needs nine innings, when you only need a 7th?
this is the same guy
who for some reason thinks otah will sit on matt forte, as if they will somehow ever play against each other.
not sure we should be expecting any good points.
