Tampa Bay Vs. Chicago - News and Notes
* Bears lead all time series 35-17.
* With Danieal Manning sliding into Brandon McGowan's role, the Bears may opt to keep Hunter Hillenmeyer in on passing plays instead of bringing in another defensive back. If the Bears do go with a CB it will likely be Corey Graham.
* With the status of Devin Hester still up in the air, rookie Earl Bennett has been getting prepped to be the team's main punt returner.
* 215 — Rookie Matt Forte's rushing yards in the first two games, the most in franchise history
* Alex Brown has a sack in the last four games going back to last year, but he’s never had more than seven in a season.
* Adewale Ogunleye has 31/2 stuffs, a tackle of a rusher for negative yardage which is the most in the NFL after two weeks.

GallopingGhost's Reponse to Notes:
*I like Corey Graham, the coaches do too, so I am curious to see how he looks.
*Bennett returning punts scares me, sure he returned one in the preseason but he also muffed or near muffed a couple too and as far as I can tell he never returned in college.
*Alex Brown is a good player, I always hope good things happen for him, maybe this will finally be the year he gets over 7 sacks.
*Wale is a beast, he is a great defensive end and I think he gets overlooked on a league-wide scale because he isn’t quite as flashy as the Patrick Kerney’s, Jared Allen’s, Mario Williams or Julius Peppers of the league.

I don't know why they won't let Danieal take the punts
I think that’s pretty ridiculous….
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
I think a lot of it this week
has to do with him taking over a safety spot. If he didn’t have to do that, he’d probably return punts.
Being Who You Thought We Were Since 2005!
Yep. Exactly.
They want all his practice reps to be at safety.
Bennett is the logical choice. And he looked much better returning punts, than he did returning kickoffs.
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

What a "bummer" for Manning.
He finally gets a chance to get regular snaps at a position (ANYWHERE!!!) and then it’s at both places. I wish he were returning kicks, though.
isnt he taking the nickle spot
i thought Payne and Brown were the starting S with Manning at nickle. i would think he could still return kickoffs.
Did you mean
Bennett is the logical choice for punt returns and Manning is logical for kickoffs?
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
Yes.
Punt returners are more vulnerable to big hits. You don’t really want to have to use a starter in the secondary if you can avoid it. And with one safety down for the year already… they shouldn’t take any chances with Manning.
BTW… how good would Manning Jr. look right now at the nickel. I don’t know WTF the Bears we’re thinking… driving him out of town.

That's what I was thinking
Manning is dangerous for opposing teams on kickoffs, so I definitely would want to use him there.
I’m still neutral on Ricky. He’d be great depth right now, but he wasn’t a stellar player either.

I read in training camp...
that Manning and Wolfe both struggled to catch the ball well on punts. Earl Bennet was better than both, but as we saw he is a little shaky too. With a game plan that doesn’t expect many points, they were probably using Vasher last week to make sure the ball was caught and not fumbled and then just take whatever he can get. A fumbled punt would be disaster in a low scoring game.
I also heard on 670 that Ricky Manning Jr was let go because he would play out of position to be more aggressive and make plays. The cover 2 is based on players being in their spot and the trust factor of other players believing that you are in your position backing them up. Often times the defensive player will try to turn a RB or WR in toward a spot which will move them toward your help, but if a guy isn’t there you look bad. RM took too many liberties and the coach didn’t like it.
Kick it to me... I'm open!
i dont know
it seems like his style fits kick returning more than punt returning because he likes to just run hard and doesnt seem like he has the quicks or agility to be a punt returner
He had a lot of agility in the preseason
He shed 3 tacklers before taking off for like 45 yards on one punt in the preseason punt returning.

The over/under on this
has to be like 20 points, right?
I am hoping the offense can have some good early drives to gain a little bit of momentum going. I haven’t seen TB play at all this year, but I am guessing they are still just as defense-oriented as we are.
Go Bears!

20 points for the two offenses.
I’d give the two Ds about 20 also.

Good
job Wally! I’m a big fan of the “stuff” or “tackle for loss” stat. I think it’s almost as important as a sack, but not anywhere near as popular.
Ummm....
Adewale Ogunleye has 31/2 stuffs, a tackle of a rusher for negative yardage which is the most in the NFL after two weeks.
Is it supposed to be 3.5 or 15.5?
Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.
No!
To rookie punt returners. The possibilties for game changing turnovers are too great. What about Vash?

Tampa
Kyle needs to be alert to the games TB will play on D. Audible out of and into run plays as they move their safety around in the box.
We need some max-protect double-move deep balls. TB D loves to jump routes and go for turnovers.
You are not going to fool this TB D. Run right at them.
With Galloway out, they have no deep threat. Crowd the box, but prepared to stop with the 10 on the line gimmick. Thats fine for an Indy team missing half their line, or an unprepared O, but against competent lines after adjusting, it exposes certain areas that Carolina burned in the 2nd half of their game. The D sucked in the 2nd half because we never recognized that the gimmick had been solved and we were getting burned.
They will play a run run screen punt offense and be happy to play field position with you. Dont give them the easy underneath stuff. That means play the linebackers honest to take away the 3 step quick slants.
