What's Earl Bennett and Brandon Rideau's deal? Could Bears sign Peppers?
Ok I can already tell the Bears will be drafting a #1 wide receiver in either the first round or second round come April because free agent wise there isn't much there. They need a dude on offense who can step in and make big plays. A #1.
For now I think the Bears need to make Marty Booker their #1 WR. They need to establish a guy they can trust to make a big play in tight games. I like Brandon Lloyd but he's not a number one WR and who knows how long he'll be out with an injury. I would like to see Orton hit Booker and Olsen more often. Maybe on slants and just more dink and dunk plays on first down and then let Forte eat up the rest.
Why don't the Bears play the younger WR's in Bennett and maybe bring up Rideau? I assume it's because the Bears feel their not ready but personally I think Rashied Davis is like a 5th option wide out.....if that. I wonder if the Rookies get action in the near future because this has to improve.
O-line
I said it last week and I'll say it again Olin Kreutz is washed up. How about that play where he pulled on the reverse to Hester? Dude can't run anymore.
FREE AGENTS Offensive Line
Matt Birk, UFA, Minnesota Vikings
Marc Colombo, UFA, Dallas Cowboys
Jordan Gross, UFA, Carolina Panthers
Mark Tauscher, UFA, Green Bay Packers
Stacy Andrews, UFA, Cincinnati Bengals
Jordan Black, UFA, Houston Texans
Vernon Carey, UFA, Miami Dolphins
George Foster, UFA, Detroit Lions
Chris Gray, UFA, Seattle Seahawks
Pete Kendall, UFA, Washington Redskins
Seth McKinney, UFA, Cleveland Browns
Jon Runyan, UFA, Philadelphia Eagles
Tra Thomas, UFA, Philadelphia Eagles
Fred Weary, UFA, Houston Texans
John Welbourn, UFA, Kansas City Chiefs
As much as I think the Bears need to look at offense next season I wouldn't mind seeing them sign another line backer to replace Hunter.
My question is could the Bears sign Julius Peppers in 09? That would be scary!

That's it?
If that’s your only evidence of Kreutz being washed up, I’m gonna go ahead and not jump on that bandwagon. The guy is a pro bowler and does his job ridiculously well. We have other positions we need to worry about first.

Firstly, the Bear aren't just deciding
to make Lloyd their number one and Booker not. Lloyd and Orton have developed some chemistry and Llyod made some big time catches last week. If he is healthy he is our #1 until somebody plays better.
Bennett is a rookie, so his shots will be numbered. If Llyod misses any playing time, he may get some more time.
Rideau is on the practice squad not that active roster, so he can’t be thrown to.
Seriously, it is way to early to be looking at free agency. Half the guys on that list will never make the market.
If the Bears can show they can pass, I’d like to see them make a run at an established guy.
Again way too early, but a team like Cincy is imploding, maybe at end of season they are looking to rebuild and we can take a shot at TJ. Boldin is unhappy in AZ, if we were willing to give him the money he wants, which is similar to Fitz, maybe AZ would be willing to deal. I know long shots, but at some point I’d like to stop waiting for rookies to develop.

Kreutz isn't washed up
He’s a center. He’s not supposed to run like Hester does.

ok, i can already tell this
post is going nowhere, b/c it was stupid for joejoe to even start this…I think our line has looked way better than I thought and we have decent backups incase guys dont work out, plus williams is starting to do individual workouts and as far as kruetz, the dude is a pro bowler and hall of famer and of course he isnt as good as he was 8 years ago, but no one is, he’s our best oline player for sure.

This Kreutz hate is ridiculous.
There is a reason Olin is respected around the league and is a top five center on almost anyone’s list. I don’t exactly dissect the Bears’ game tape, but it appears that most of the trouble in pass protection is coming from the ends and from blitzing DB’s coming around the ends, not from blown blocking up the middle. The entire unit has also been very solid with it’s run production. These complaints are almost entirely unwarranted. Now going after St. Clair would be justified, but Kreutz?

run production...
… has been “very solid?”
Not so sure about that.
The Bears are 17th in the NFL in yards per carry (out of 32 teams). They are 10th in NFL in yards per game, even though they are 4th in carries per game.
I am not sure that is “very solid.”

you can't look at pure stats
you seem to be especially in love with yards per carry. yards per carry isn’t as meaningful as production, and i don’t think you can deny that the running game has been productive. it has kept the chains moving on a consistent basis as well as setting up manageable 3rd down situations, which is one reason that the bears have been good on 3rd downs this year. plus being 4th in carries and 10th in yards shows that we’re committed to running it and doing a good job at it, which will be good for the passing game in the long run.

also rememeber
we’ve been up against a few stout run Ds who were gunning to stop the run and make Orton beat them through the air. the run game has been pretty solid considering all that.

no
you can’t look at pure stats
Then what are we supposed to be looking at? Of course, it is funny that you then go on to look at stats:
plus being 4th in carries and 10th in yards shows that we’re committed to running it and doing a good job at it
No… it means that the Bears don’t have a legitimate passing game.

whatever man
what are we supposed to be looking at? how about watch the game and see if something is working. you just keep putting your negative spin on everything and I’ll just keep enjoying wins and we can leave it at that.
by Ando on Sep 30, 2008 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
What negative spin is he putting on there?
The Bears are piling up the rushing yards but not doing it effectively. It’s a cause for concern with the future performance of the team. If you want to blindly rah rah your way through the season, that’s your prerogative. Looking at the team, though, with a critical eye does not preclude one from being able to enjoy whatever success the team has.

i think the run game has been effective
That’s all I’m saying. Room for improvement? Sure, but it’s still been solid. Being 17th in YPC does not indicate no success in the running game.

huh?
Where did I say, “no success?”

The Bears have faced some pretty good run defenses
I’m interested in seeing what our run numbers are like after the next 4.

but we should put up some numbers against Detroit and Atlanta.

actually
Forte is #1 in yards among this deep rookie class and #3 in the NFL in yds, so, ya Id lk to say thats solid

I don't care...
… where Forte stands among rookies. That is irrelevant.

Then how about the other half of his argument
Forte is 6th in total rushing and 2nd in yards from scrimage.
The man is on pace to gain almost 2000 total yards!

that is not my point.
my point is that you cannot just look at total yards of a running back to see if an offensive line has been productive.

The Guys on Bears Postgame Live on CSn
They were all for bringing up Rideau too. I think that isn’t the worst idea, I still can’t figure out for the life of me why the coaches praised Bennett all offseason and now give him exactly 0 opportunities. It must have been more of the Bears propaganda machine. As for Kreutz, I think he’s still got some left in the tank, although as I sit here in my Kreutz jersey I might be a bit biased. and one more thing…No first round wide receivers statistics have shown that it is the riskiest position to draft in round 1. O-line is safest. So I’d rather see another o-lineman or a QB before a WR.

Some more examples of Lovie's "praise"
“We really like Chad Hutchinson as our starter.” – Two weeks later, they cut him
“Mark Bradley is our #1 WR.” – After they cut Moose and let Berrian leave via FA.
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.
