The Quotable Bears (Week One)

To start this installment of the Quotable Bears, I'd like to show what the Bears think about us:

''Preseason doesn't count!'' one player bellowed.

''What are they going to write about now?'' another chimed in.

Ogunleye on the media and the fans:

"Y'all didn't give us a chance. Today you could see how confused Peyton was. He didn't know what the hell was going on. It's not about flipping the switch. We weren't really blitzing [in the preseason], and offenses had the advantage."

Peyton on the game:

"It's a real disappointing feeling. Whether it's the first game of the season in a new stadium or the 15th game ... it's real disappointing to lose. It took me a little time to get into a rhythm; I felt like our offense gave them the safety, the turnover and then turning the ball over on downs. I was really trying to be smart with the ball. In the second half, what the Bears did is what they usually do to win-they created turnovers. That's something that we thrive on not doing."

Lovie on the Bears (and again, a terrific example of LovieSpeak)

''This is the way you want to start off your season."

Lovie on the plan to pound the ball against the Colts:

''We've seen flashes of that throughout the preseason and throughout training camp. Our offensive line did a super job of opening holes for all our running backs.''

Lovie on Forte:

"How about Matt Forte?"

Gale Sayers on Forte:

"He has speed and good quickness, but I think he's going to have to learn how to find a hole. When it comes to the offensive line, they lack a little bit. So he's going to have to learn to find a hole. When I first came into the NFL, I was always looking for a place for a play to develop. Sometimes the block wasn't there. If it wasn't there, I had the great peripheral vision to find somewhere else to go."

Dungy on the game:

''We certainly haven't had one like that in a long time, where we got that soundly outplayed. They outplayed us for four quarters, and the score was indicative of how the game went."

Forte on the game:

"I'm glad we won, but I'm not going to go crazy over it. It's the first game. It's a 16-game season. The shoulder was a little numb, but I just went to the sideline and had to shake it off, get back in there and play. I know what our offense can be. I had a sense we were going to do well."

Orton on the offense:

'We really ran the football at them, and we're a running team. Any time we do that, control the clock and make key plays in the passing game, we're going to be right there.''

Babich on the defense:

''We really played hard. We played a physical game.''

Briggs on the defense:

"Just another week. It's no longer preseason. This is the week that counts."

Tillman on the defense:

"I'm just glad we did turn it on because it really counts now. Nobody gave us a chance. We probably had three people who picked us to win this game. I'm sure all the people who bet on us in Vegas made a lot of money."

Mike Brown on the defense:

''Our defense, when we play well, usually we have a pretty good game. Like we've been telling you guys, we played pretty vanilla in the preseason, and the package that we have is pretty good. It helps us play aggressive and with a lot of energy. It was a good night for us.''

Garza on the new stadium:

''It was still pretty loud, believe me.''

I love these posts and look forward to it ChiFan13!

I was really hoping to see the postgame interview with Urlacher. The look on his face when that gal said it was an upset to beat the Colts was priceless.

I'm not sure I will be on there during the season.

I had a party with about 8 guests that we were watching the game together. I expect that to be a common thing during the season for Bears games. One of my friend’s wife wore a Manning jersey. I shouldn’t have let her in, but she got it all game from us. LOL.

I do enjoy the game threads too, but that game was a lot of fun. Tons of posts in that thread!!

Sounds good to me

I don’t blame you for not being on then, but A+ on making fun of the Manning fan.

“ESPN’s front page will still be Brady: Welcome to the second city boys” – GallopingGhost

As well it should be. Brady possibly being out for the season is a much bigger story than the Bears beating the Colts.

agreed

I mean he is the best player in the NFL

No...

… just pointing out that the Tom Brady story SHOULD be the lead story on ESPN.

I wouldn't say "much bigger".

Colts were/are arguably the best or second best team in the AFC. New stadium. At home. Haven’t had their butt kicked (I don’t think) in a loooooooooong time.

Bears coming off a really bad season, not much improvement, on the road, Kyle Orton starting QB, defense iffy.

I’d argue this could be a bigger upset than the Super Bowl last year, eclipsed only by the magnitude of the games. They were 9.5 point underdogs and won by 16. I don’t know if there will be a bigger upset the rest of the year, minus the playoffs.

Not saying Brady isn’t a bigger story, I just don’t think it’s “much bigger.”

disagree

The NFL’s team, losing arguably the NFL’s best player for the season, is a huge story.

And it is a much bigger story than any individual regular season game.

Don’t get me wrong – the Bears going to Indy and beating the Colts IS a big story. I just think that it pales in comparison to the top player in the league going down for the season in game one.

Not only is Brady's injury a much bigger story than the Bears opening day win

it could be the biggest story of the entire football season. Remember when Dan Marino blew out hi achilles? It’s a big deal when one of the best, if not the best player is going to miss an entire season.

The Bears win was good for football.

Brady injury is tragic.

by tempchad on Sep 8, 2008 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is the bigger story, no doubt but the Bears game wasn't even a headline

Anywhere on the page, it was buried in the links underneath the Brady story, I thought it should at least get pushed to the sidebar headline or the top headline in the news column.

I couldnt be happier today...

My 5th year on Indiana Universities campus and I could never brag about the Bears over the 14234230 Colts fans out here… BUT FINALLY!!!! IT was fun watching them scramble for excuses, and the quote of the night… “uh…well… uh… atleast we have a real QB!” haha your right, but man we outplayed you horses

That last night....

Makes living in Indy that much better. At least I have this to hold over Colts fans for the next year when they make a retarded comment about my Bears hat in public.

by bentley on Sep 8, 2008 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I go to school in Indiana too

And a lot of us Bears fans wore are jerseys today, just to stick it to the Colts fans. No one has said anything to me yet, but I finally have bragging rights!

Forte is the man

His running is great, but his mental make up is what’s going to set him apart. He ran with authority, great balance and vision. Who on this board said the Bears don’t have any talent on offense?

I don't think anybody said

we don’t have any talent. It was more of a there are not many gamebreakers or guys that will scare other teams. Orton still does not fit that bill.

I'm not sure that Forte will scare other teams either.

The line will have to open holes regularly for that to happen, but it could. Maybe.
