Bears Making a Mockery of Pre Season Power Rankings
The Worldwide Leader has released their power rankings for Week 1 and as you can imagine they a bit different then they were before the season. Obviously, some changes they couldn't have predicted such as Brady going down and the Pats falling from 1 to 9, but it just shows what happens when you put everything into last season's results and you buy whole heartedly into the hype. The current top to prior to the season looked like this:
Patriots
Chargers
Cowboys
Colts
Jaquars
Steelers
Saints
Giants
Seahawks
Packers
The current top 10 after week 1 are:
Cowboys
Steelers
Chargers
Saints
Giants
Eagles
Packers
Colts
Patriots
Jaguars
At this point they are still hoping the first week was a fluke and to some extent they would be correct, but the Bears took a dump all over their power rankings. Their preseason ranking was 25 and after week 1 they shoot up to 15:
They shocked the world in Indianapolis, and the health of their defense remains the key.
The real point of this post is just to belittle the usefulness of pre season rankings be it NFL, NCAA or whatever. All they are, are guesses. Until you see a team play you don't know. You can assume Kyle Orton is going to stink up the joint, but until he gets out there you are just shooting in the dark.

I'm not sure we "shocked the world"...
The Colts weren’t at full strength, and we are a lot, LOT better than that preseason ranking.
Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.
I'm pretty sure we did
Let’s be honest….not many of us thought it could happen. We wished we could beat the Colts, but I didn’t think we would.
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
I thought it would be a close game though.
The Colts won’t win their division this year IMO.
Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.
except...
… the pre-season ranking is what the “world” thought of the Bears.
If the Bears are a “lot, LOT better” than that, than it would be a shock.

Relative to the number of teams, they are a lot better.
I would put them at the bottom of the top 16, or at the top of the bottom 16 (in the middle basically). Their current ranking seems closer.
Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.
And the "world" is...
ESPN. That’s like taking the opinions of one state’s Reps. and using that as the judgement on a bill.
Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.
look...
… no one expected the Bears to be good. No one expected the Bears to beat the Colts.
And lets be honest – it is just one game. Lets wait a little bit to see how good this team is.

Let's not get too out of hand here.
I’ve said (I think, somewhere), that this might end up being the biggest upset of the year, but let’s not count chickens or anything.
upsets are when they happen
otherwise, NYG wasn’t an upset at all. I mean, they won the Super Bowl, so they should beat the Super Bowl losers, shouldn’t they?
it was a huge upset, and will always be. 9.5 underdogs to 16 pt winners. that’s huge.
upsets get better or worse in hindsight
if the bears go on to win the north and go to the playoffs, it wasn’t that great of an upset. it just meant that we all handicapped the game wrong and underestimated the bears.
Awesome point.
We may find out the Colts only win 8 games and Peyton goes on IR or they may go 15-1.
Kick it to me... I'm open!

IMO
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad
the only thing
im sure of is that the so called “experts” dont watch games.
this team has never been about the qb but yet thats all you hear about. its a running football team and a fast and physical d. the only difference this year is that we actually have a running back and a healthy d… so far.
Make Your Own ESPN Power Rankings!
To determine whether a team is top 10 material…
1) Do they score a lot of points?
2) Do they have a quarterback who puts up loads of fantasy points?
3) Do they have Reggie Bush?
4) Do they score a lot of points?
5) Can we make fun of Philadelphia’s fans, who haven’t really done anything of note in 20 years?
6) Do they have any loudmouth wide receivers or other soundbite producing characters?
7) Can we write something about Brett Favre despite him not being on a particular team?
8) Do they score a lot of points?
9) Put in Jacksonville to avoid charges of big-market bias.
Insert clever and witty remark slash pun here!
Plus how do the Steelers
Get dropped from the top ten after whomping the Texans when that was a chic upset pick for week 1?
Fire Angelo!!
Short lived
The only problem is the Bears now have to face the Panthers. The secondary is too weak to go against the Panthers new dynamic receivers and blossoming Tight End. Muhammad is back with a vengeance, and Jake has a new bionic elbow. The Chargers defense is just as good as the Bears, yet they couldn’t even penetrate the Panthers revamped mammoth offensive line. Jeff Otah just might sit on Matt Forte. Remember the 2005 playoffs? Its going to suck to relive that nightmare.

Where receivers go to die!
Muhammad sucks? Use some logic. Last season he played with Carolina, he led the league in receiving yards. Let me simplify that for you… he had more yards than any other receiver in the league! Then he goes to Chicago and the QBs suck soooo bad, that they can’t get the ball to anyone. Why does Chicago run the ball? Its not strategic, its because they have no other option.
Like Moose said… its where receivers go to die.

how much older did he get again?
he’s a contract year player.
not it is strategy, being a panthers fan i wouldn’t expect you to get that.
you don’t even know where your fucking draft picks play.
1 year
What makes you think I don’t know where the Panthers draft picks play? I said Otah might just sit on Forte, not that he played DLine. But I see that you are such an admirer of Carolina, that you even know the players on the OLine. I understand. When your teams OLine cant pass block, it does make you really respect a team like Carolina.

hey dumbass
I said Otah might just sit on Forte, not that he played DLine. But I see that you are such an admirer of Carolina, that you even know the players on the OLine
i guess one of us has to, since you somehow think otah will somehow play against forte.
you guys realize you haven’t done shit in 3 years right?
Chargers?
3 years ago we were in the NFC Championship… actually that’s two NFC Championships and one Superbowl in the last 5 years. That’s one more NFC Championship than the Bears. And our win last week over the Chargers??? Forget about that? Do you think Chicago has a better offense than San Diego? I hope you are not that arrogant… but being Bears fans you might be.

Arrogance?
You wanna talk about arrogance? Look in the mirror.
You, as a supposed Carolina fan, come onto a Chicago Bears blog and tell us that Muhammad is good. You have to be kidding me. Use some common sense bro….Muhammad is washed up, old news. I’m really looking forward to watching our defense toss him around like a rag doll. Wait….to do that, he’d actually have to catch a pass. Whoops. By the way, I said supposed Carolina fan because you obviously have lost all touch with reality if you think Muhammad is good.
Going back to the arrogance bit, you really have a lot of nerve telling us how reality sits. I know you feel ready to try the Pampers Pull-Ups after your win last week, but you scraped by with a victory. And I mean scraped. We had ours locked up within the last six minutes. Your team, on the other hand….
Bottom line: You got lucky against the Chargers. You won’t be against the Bears.
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
Bears fans have a reputation
Bears fans have a reputation of being arrogant. You say Muhammad isn’t good, yet he just a key part of us knocking off the Chargers, AND he was your best receiver. In Carolina he splits the number 2 with Hackett. So if he isn’t good then that means your receiver situation is in bad shape… which we already know.
But let’s be honest:
Carolina has a better passing game… even without Smitty.
Chicago looks like they could have the better defense.
The running game looks good on both teams.
So it should be a close game. I think Carolina pulls it off, we will see tomorrow.

Would you point me to an article
where Bears fans are supposedly proven arrogant?
Muhammad had 56 yards and no touchdowns against the Chargers…..and he’s good?
Moose was our #1 because Berrian was our deep threat. Don’t be stupid.
Let’s be honest:
Carolina doesn’t have anything in the passing game except for Rosario (who was a complete surprise)
Chicago has the better defense (there’s no comparison)
We do have an even running game
We will beat you tomorrow.
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
actually
3 years ago we were in the NFC Championship… actually that’s two NFC Championships and one Superbowl in the last 5 years
being there doesn’t mean shit. one nfc championship in 5 years. woo hoo.
brilliant
That’s brilliant… one NFC Championship in 5 years doesn’t mean anything? Well that’s what the Bears have! Carolina has 2. So you just slammed your own team.

2 huh?
please show me the second nfc championship carolina has won in the last 5 years. as i siad, getting their doesn’t mean shit for any team.
you have strong feelings for a team you appear to know nothing about. must have started watching last week.
looking forward
to otah lining up against forte.
lol.
idiotic
brilliant once again… they both play offense. Maybe you should find a different hobby that doesn’t require thinking.

hey dumbfuck
you’re the one who siad they would play each other.
I don't admire Carolina at all
And yet, I know the players on your OL.
Looking forward to seeing you limp away to Cat Scratch after our win against you on Sunday.
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
Yes, yes, you are correct . . .
your team beat our team three years ago. Wow. Thanks for the history lesson.
One game does not “new dynamic receivers and blossoming Tight End” make. I laugh at you like I laugh at all of the bandwagon ESPN “experts” who hand all over Royal Eddie’s testies after one game of his NFL career.
Of course, you can compare our defense to the Chargers, but we have different schemes, and our combined front seven (that includes better LBs) is better than the Chargers and a gimpy Merriman.
And yeah, I’d like to see Otah sit on Forte because then he’d have a personal foul penalty called against him; might even get kicked out of the game.
Umm, unless they plan on disguising Steve Smith
That won’t happen this week. Smith is suspended and he tore us up that game. Unless you see Moose getting 250 yards receiving.
Kick it to me... I'm open!
Dont need Smitty to beat the Bears
In 05’ Carolina needed Smitty to beat the Bears. This year they don’t. Hackett, Muhammad and Dwayne Jarret are better than any of Chicago’s receivers. Delhomme is worlds better than Orton. Orton is really just a backup QB. Panther’s first and second option RBs is better than Forte.
Plus Forte won’t be able to run the ball against Carolina like he did Indy. Their D-line is better and the linbackers are among the top in the NFL. They held LT under 100 yards. The only other option is to put the ball in the air… ooops…. thats right… the whole ‘where receivers go to die’ thing. You might not score at all if Hester or your defense doesn’t pull one out. You can’t win without an offense. Carolina is balanced… The Bears aren’t. My prediction… Carolina 24… Bears 10

we have a crappy GM
and we still win!
Manning didn’t give up 29 points, the Colts defense (and Marvin Harrison) did. As I recall, Bob Sanders was last years Defensive POY. And the Colts overall defense was ranked third in overall yards given up, and gave up the least points in the game.
But like I said, that was last year. This is a new year, and our defense can be better than it’s ever been. So let the games be played rather than puff our chests out so much, Panther boy.
anyone have any interest
in trading for anquan boldin? i know it would take at least a 1st round pick to trade for him but i think that would be worth it…
Not really.
We don’t have money to pay him. The defense got everything. If we were going to spend some bucks, I’d say spend it on the OL. Then we could run, give Orton time to pass, and we have 2 great TE’s and a couple average WR’s out there all the time plus a dump pass to a RB. That is all this team needs to score points. We are built on defense. OL is the number one thing to fix right now.
Kick it to me... I'm open!
Da Panthers!
What did I tell ya? Half way through the game I thought I was going to have to come back here and apologize. But the Bears just couldn’t keep it together for 4 quarters. You couldn’t even beat us without Steve Smith. You can now sign the Panthers fan list at www.CatScratchReader.com
