Julius Peppers/Jordan Gross

Story going around is that the Panthers and Peppers are no where near a new deal and that Peppers will be franchised.

That may make Gross a bit easier to get.

I would hope

But we both know the Bears will not spend the money on Gross. I’ll even go one up and predict they don’t even bring him in for an interview or meeting.

I won't whole heartedly disagree

but we did bring in John Tait when he was in his prime and gave him good money at the time, so I wouldn’t say there is no chance, but I doubt it.

We seriously overpaid for Tait... because we were desperate at the position.

The Chiefs put the transition tag on him… and we structured a deal that was impossible for them to match.

Not arguing that

just we have put out money for Oline before. Gross is actually worth it.

gross would be a bigger get

IF we get some good people coaching the defense. i think our d-line still has enough talent to excel, but our offensive line is pretty suspect (and aging), especially on the run. if we circle the wagons and keep the same stubborn attitude on D, though, we’re going to be a bottom-10 defense next year, too, without major changes (ie peppers).

maybe

but you’d taken.

nice

Both players are good. If the Panthers let either go I’d like to to see them Bears… but I doubt the Bears to go after top level talent in FA.

How much does Peppers want? is it out of our price range if he hits FA?
Would Gross replace Tait or is Williams staying on the bench?

Rod Marinelli is in so...

It looks like we are serious about addressing our defensive situation. So why not take it a step further and bring in some serious weapons for Marinelli to work with? We put out some big time $ last year so do we continue or are we strapped for cash all of a sudden?

As far as Chris Williams goes, I don’t see a Jerry Angelo 1st round pick sitting on the bench unless he is really sucking wind. Hopefully he is the real deal. Tait played decent this year but we absolutely bring in a big time O lineman.

He's got some serious weapons

Tommie Harris, for example. But yes, I agree that he needs to get some new players.

a little premature

granted ogunleye didn’t put his best foot forward this year but, I don’t believe he is done by any means. I know its gonna sound like an easy fix but I believe most of the pieces to our dline being ferocious are there, as long as we put some serious meat next to tommie harris, when tank was filling that spot the line was awesome. I"m not saying we need albert haynsworth or anyone of his caliber ( however that would be nice) however if we were to go after lets say Rocky bernard from the seahawks.I know they sucked this year but he had 55 tackles and four and a half sacks and at 6 ft 3 in weighing 308 lbs he could really be a force.

#94

Our DEs are talented, but alex brown is the only i’d call ferocious. Wale is overpriced and Anderson has shown that he can make plays (maybe not consistently, but 12 sacks as a rookie is hard to ignore). Maybe trade Wale for a pick

So i agree in that #2 DT is more of a priority than #4 DE. I thought Harrison would become the #2 DT next to Harris. His sack of Peyton in the first game gave me hope, but he disappeared after that. I still see him as a guy who can and will eat up plays and defenders in the middle. Is Harrison enough or the answer? dunno. Do the Bears look for someone to replace Harrison or someone to spell him? dunno.

If Tommie Harris was playing well enough to demand double teams,,,

Then, our ends probably would’ve produced more sacks.

Face it, we don’t have an elite pass rushing end like Jared Allen… but, we do have good football players.

whats the point?

Is harris supposed to demand double teams freeing up others or are others on the line supposed to prevent teams from doubling Harris? Either one sounds nice, but how does the dynamic on the Dline actually play out on the field… and how is it supposed to?

Now what

how does the loss to the cards (which i called btw) effect the status of both of these guys? Do the Panthers want to try again with both of these players because after all they did get to the playoffs? or do they want to change things up a little and let these guys get to FA.

wasn't their fault

if their quarterback wasn’t so bad it might still have been a good game. i can’t see them letting anyone from that line get away, but allegedly they are talking about franchising peppers. not sure what that means for gross, a deal or walk.

Not Really...

On Jordan Gross, his O-line got demolished all day by the D-Line of the Cardinals in both run blocking and pass protection, yeah the Delhomme threw quite a few picks but he had people in his face all night. That could be Gross’s fault or just the rest of the O-Line getting demolished i don’t know but just don’t pretend that it wasn’t his fault just because Delhomme threw 5 picks

I really don’t know about Peppers he seemed to play alright.

i'm not pretending

anything,

even if gross was responsible for every single instance of pressure he’s still good enough they shouldn’t be letting him go.

by mike b on Jan 11, 2009 3:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree...

I would love it if the Bears picked him up. I was just saying it was partly his fault that they lost that game

I remember

That list of free agents included tra Thomas. I think he’s in his late 20s still and could get moved to right tackle effectively. Anyone know his status?

Thomas and John Runyan are both on the FA list

he is 34 tho, Runyan is 35…wonder what the Eagles plans are regarding that.
