Rod Marinelli hired as Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Line Coach
Rotoworld is reporting the following information:
NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Bears have hired ex-Lions coach Rod Marinelli as assistant head coach/defensive line.
The Texans and Seahawks also pursued Marinelli, but neither had offered him the defensive coordinator position. The Bears next move may be to bring in Marinelli's son-in-law Joe Barry as linebackers coach.
Usually I don't post directly from rotoworld, but this is the only source I could find it. I think this is a good move. If Babich continues to run bad plays next season, we have an excellent candidate as a mid season replacement.
UPDATE: ESPN is also reporting this deal. The link is here: Click!

Damn...
Well, after trashing this move before it was official, I now have to be positive.
At least Marinelli has a ton of NFL experience… and his son in law Joe Barry has plenty of NFL experience as well.

Why do you have to be positive?
Don’t be like Al Yellon. If it stinks before, it stinks now.
(I have no opinion on this matter as it’s just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.)

since "brick haley" was the reason we couldn't rush the passer last season
we can expect truckloads of sacks next season?

Let's hope
Marinelli actually does something.

Exactly
What do we have to lose, right? I never thought that I would be so excited to have a former 0-16 head coach on our coaching staff. But when I saw the news just a few minutes ago at CB.com I yelled out loud, “yeah! we got him!” I think only a Bear fan can find such excitement

Hot Rod Marenelli the Magic Man
Can Hot Rod work his magic with what we have? or do we buy some new toys for him to play with? With our history it seems as though since we have a big time D line coach now we just provide average players for him to work with. I’ m sure we had to give marinelli some decent cash but we still need a big time pass rusher or is Hot Rod gonna bring the vision for Mark Anderson alive.

Maybe he'll inspire a touch training camp again
instead of the Beach Club Lovie’s been running for the last two years.
Lovie’s first couple of training camps whipped everyone into shape and got guys flying after the ball. That has completely disappeared. Be used to have defensive tackles recovering fumbles 15-20 yards down field. When’s the last time you saw that happen?

well, i will say this
we’ve generally had coaches with little experience during lovie’s tenure, particularly those with really good track records. rod has a pretty nice resume (minus the whole head coach thing). he has done great on the defensive side of the ball, and i expect he’ll get the most out of our d-line. now, if only we could do something about babich…

Hopefully...
Marineli can get Tommie Harris and Mark Anderson in place again. This was the second highest paid d line in the leaque and yet, they could barely pressure QB’s. Hopefully Marineli restores the fire in this D Line. That being said, Marineli is still under Babich’s command (barf).

To me...
..this says Babich will stay. I think otherwise Marinelli would have become the DC and not the assistant HC and D-Line coach.

Dumb Question
Does assistant HC give Marineli the power to control the plays that Babich calls.

Don't think so...
I’m not sure exactly what he does different, but I don’t think this is something he does. I do know that he will be the second highest paid coach on the team next to Lovie with that title.

I think it gives Marinelli
a little more input with personnel decisions, and the overall scheme of the defense. Also, Lovie has his system that BoBab executes. Marinelli will have a little more creative input as to how the Bears implement Lovie’s system.
In summary, it’s still Lovie’s system, but considering he and Rod are on the same page, he is giving Rod a lot more freedom to work than if Rod was just a position coach. Lovie will then be able to focus on more of the overall scheme, and allow Marinelli and BoBab to work together on the defense.

The title is just contract protection for the Bears...
If an NFL team wants to make a coaching offer to a coach from another team, they must offer a a job promotion to “pry away” a coach under contract…
By giving Marinelli the title “Assistant Head Coach,” another team would have to offer him a Head Coaching position.

or what he said

It meanss the Bears don't have to allow him to interview for another job...
…except head coaching positions. Any NFL coach must be allowed to interview for a “better position” even if under contract. Without the “assistant head coach”, he could interview as a D-coordinator somewhere else. There’s nothing higher than Asst. HC than HC, and he’s not being interviewed anywhere for that until he proves himself again at more than than coaching D-line.
Because they put that tag on there, I’m sure there’s a better salary attached, too.

I just saw...
…that Marinelli actually dropped out of the Seattle DC running because he only wanted to be a D-Line coach.
by Twins Territory on Jan 11, 2009 11:37 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
so this prob means Joe barry will also come to the bears
to coach LB’s

Don't worry about barry
He just got the Seattle linebackers job today… Heard it from SI earlier.

I don't know if anyone asked in an earlier thread
But does anyone think / hope the Bears will give him a gatorade bath after the team’s first victory? It would certainly make Sportscenter, at the very least.

People who say "Well he coached an 0-16 team, he sucks!"
I, for one, believe that it wasn’t his fault that the team went defeated. When your team doesn’t win a SINGLE game, how can you blame for the coach for that? How can you blame him for losing the game were Kitna ran out of the end zone? Some of their games were rather competitive when they had nothing to lose.
The person to blame for the Lions mess: The owner and Matt Millen.

Maybe he could really help us on the defensive side next year
But when a coach goes 10-38 in 3 seasons as a coach at some point it is his fault. Adjustments are key as a head coach and his record got worse and worse each year.

Maybe Marinelli will bring in Shaun Cody, as a FA from Detroit.
Could be a good rotational DT for us.

end of story because he is staying for his senior year…? unripe for discussion – yes moot- no apparently the argument de jure is he is staying for his senior year, therefore he won’t be an NFL QB.
