Kerry Collins, Latest Bears Rumor

Bears31_medium

Come one, come all.  Welcome to Lov & Jerry's QB shop.  Come in from the heat and have a scoop or rumor as it is.  We have 31 flavors of the latest and greatest QBs.

Yesterday we brought you the slow churned Byron Leftwich.  Today's flavor is Kerry Collins.

Collins has told the Tennessee Titans and for that matter that the league that he is a starter and has a few more good years left, but if he isn't a starter he is going to retire.

"I made my case known, that I'd like to be here and feel that I can be a part of several more good seasons. I have several good years left in me, I know that," Collins said. "I will pack up and go somewhere else. I don't want to, but that's the reality of this business. … I am a starter in this league and if nothing materializes that way I will retire.''

Collins is a free agent and as such the Titans are going to have to make a decision on him.  They drafted Vince Young to be their QB of the future, but benched him for the season after a few games due to injury and personal issues.  They will not be able to keep Young on the bench long paying him that much.

The Bears would not give Collins the nod up front, but maybe the chance to go into training camp in an open competition would be intriquing to him.  Collins, as a veteran, would be more apt to pick up a new system more quickly than a QB chosen in the draft or some other young on the rocks QB.

Passing Rushing Sacks
G Rating Comp Att Pct Yds Y/G Y/A TD INT Rush Yds Y/G Avg TD Sack YdsL
2008 - Kerry Collins 16 80.2 242 415 58.3 2676 167.3 6.4 12 7 25 49 3.1 2.0 0 8 60

Collins is a nice mix of one time quitter, revived career and desperate for one last shot that he makes more sense for a team like the Bears.

What is your take on Collins?

No

I don’t want him unless he’s a back up. Just once in my lifetime since Jimmy Mac can the Bears get a QB that will be a LONG term solution not just a short term or band aid QB. I don’t doubt Collins talent and wanting to play but if he’s said he’s already thinking about retireing we’ll be right back where we are now in a year or two. That’s just bad logic.

If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

I know

By saying I don’t want him unless he’s a back up that would be the only way I’d want him on the team. I know he doesn’t want to be a back up. But didn’t Bret Farve retire like 63 times as well. And isn’t Pacman innocent all the time? :)

If we shore up our OLine, Orton will be okay for a couple of years.

Hopefully, we will draft a QB that will be good enought to start in a couple of years.

I put Collins in the same boat as Farve, Warner, McNabb, Hasselback, Garcia, Kitna…

These guys could put up numbers with a good supporting cast on Offense, which we don’t have, but it none of them have more than a couple more good seasons left in them.

So a couple with Orton, who knows our system… then who knows what happens. I have mentally prepared myself for 2 more seasons with Orton.

Maybe

He can be the holder. Is that a starting position? If he is in camp to “compete” I’ll puke.

Why with all the QBs

KO, before his injury, was on pace for 3700 yards and 23 tds… He went a record long pass attempts with no INTs; granted some of that was luck but still he has potential in this offense. Give him a legit recieving threat that isn’t a TE and he can realize that potential. Give him the chance to be good before you throw him under a speeding bus.

His potenial

He reached his “potential” before he got hurt. It was average at best. Not bad ,but average. No deep possiblitys at all. Kyle will be one of the better BACK-UP QB’S in the league. He starts now because he plays for “Da Bears”. Before you start. I’ve been a Bears fan since the early 70’s. thru thick and thin. An Ace is An ACE.A Rose by any other name is still a ROSE.

Just curious...

Is it a law that we have to have either a quarterback we draft who is terrible or somebody else’s washed up scrub?

Just checking.

Collins is a washed up scrub.

I’ve got an idea… how about we actually do something about getting somebody who can PLAY quarterback, and give him a pair of at least league average receivers, and give that a try for a while.

If we are going to go for a washed up guy, why not at least go for a GOOD one like Warner or Garcia.

Personally, I would sign one of those two for a year or two and trade with the Redskins for Colt Brennan who I think would fit perfectly into the Bears offense down the road… people people say he doesn’t have the size or arm, but they were also saying that Devon Bess was too slow to play at the NFL level… and Brennan hit Bess a LOT. Perhaps we should go pick up Grice-Mullen while we are at it :) (OK, my Warriors fanhood is showing… still…)

Apparently Angelo has this rule

applied to a pillow in his office “Thou shalt only sign average QBs”

But hey! theres something impressive about that. Hitting for the average/below average line, and NEVER missing? He’s batting 1.000, baby! You’d think by now he’d have lucked into something by now, right?

too much to ask...

4 a qb who is really good at at least something!?!

Grossmans good at something.

He’s a world class fumbler! Thats something right?

Orton is really good at throwing the underneath stuff.

I never said all of them went the the right guys

but yeah, his accuracy is much better in the shorter area of passing.

Perhaps you are right...

But perhaps if we franchised him this last year we won ONE of the close games and make the playoffs.

its a wash

between him and orton.

by No It All on Jan 13, 2009 3:16 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why get Collins if we have him

a dozen years younger or so in Orton. We should not be wasting money by giving a QB stater type money, which since Collins will only do I am sure he wants to be paid like it. At the QB postion, take a 1 year deal top backup/borderline starter money on Carr or Leftwitch both improvements over Grossman to give Orton some camp competion if they think he needs the motvation. They need to spend the biggest chunks of their FA money and picks in the first three rounds on adding a number 1 WR, and getting a playmaker at DE, LB and in the secondary. They also need to then get FA bargins or spending 4-7th round picks on improving the depth of both lines, a compeant back-up for Forte, and a 2nd or 3rd WR option to fill out addressing the non-primary needs of this team.

Orton will be our QB, period

If the Bears do bring in a FA QB, it will be someone inferior to Orton, purposely. Lets face it, Orton is our guy like it or not.

Better options

I’d rather see the Bears sign Garcia, he’d be a nice change-up for Orton. In addition, it wouldn’t cause the dreaded QB controversy on offense. Does anyone realize the Bears WRs are putrid? It’s more important for JA to address the wideout situation with an established veteran, who can gain separation and make plays on 3rd downs.

Reps

If Orton goes into camp with some new recievers and does not have to split the reps with anyone he will probably suprise a lot of people. I agree we need to draft a QB but we have other needs in rnd1 and 2. A good rnd 3 pick would be Sanchez or Josh Freeman 6’6" 250#

To old

Collins is to old.. I still say go for a seasoned rookie. Im talkin a 5th year senior. OSU’s Todd Beockman is ideal to Joe Flacco and I think he will be available in rounds 3-5!! Excellent pick up in mid rounds. He’s got a great arm, knows the game and will be able to adapt to the NFL. He’s an ideal NFL QB at 6’5" 230 pocket passer..

Todd Beockman

He is also a Chicago friendly QB coming from Ohio where it is also cold, windy, and snowy.. Not from FLORIDA !!!

He is

 the new Craig Krenzel…

by tfrabotta on Jan 14, 2009 9:53 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Krenzel??

Krenzel doesn’t come close to Beockman and/or Flacco.. I think we need a tall QB with a cannnon.. Krenzel didn’t have an arm and we don’t have one either. If anything Orton is a Krenzel replacement! Either way we have nobody that can throw the ball deep, and with Hester as our #1 WR we need to be able to do so.

If that is all it takes why don't we get the QB

from the University of Alaska and call it a day.
