Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

And to think, we weren't willing to give him a shot.

Here's an interesting look at the statistical comparisons between the golden boy Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner.

I've spent the better part of my musing on Kurt Warner thinking, "Wow, what an unnecessarily lucky scrub."   But as the Cards have continued to defy odds through the playoffs, I'm seeing a barrage of, "Well, to be fair, he's good."

And he is.

If the Cardinals win next weekend, there's a very good chance he's a Hall of Fame guy.  He does not have the total yards stats......but all the rest of them are kind of there.

Erm, well if we are going to call Milton Bradley nicknames, mine is Fischer Price: yes, you heard it here first..

I will not argue with that one haha

Unfortunetely, looks like many of his choices in the past few years (Ie Benson, Williams, etc) have been poor.

Benson was a good pick,

As he was one hell of a player coming out of Texas. At the time we made that pick, there wasn’t anybody who thought it was a bad pick.

As far as Williams, as I posted in another thread, his injury this year may or may not have had anything to do with his college injury. If it doesn’t, then the pick was not a bad one yet. But he does need to have a good next season in order to prove himself. If his injury this year was indeed related to his college injury, the YES, it was a bad pick. But we really will never know the truth.

I had a friend

who called me after the Benson pick. He said your future franchise RB is crying in his interview, he sucks and won’t last with your team past his rookie contract.

Had I only known that was the magic trait.

I will third that...

I wanted Derrick Johnson, his teammate, because I wanted to have the best LB corp in the league. I also really wanted Braylon Edwards but he was gone.

I really thought Benson was a dumb pick, considering that we had such good luck with Curtis Enis previously.

wow...

So because he cried, we knew he was going to suck?

You have to be kidding me…

I was not serious

just that he said it and I got the call the second the Bears dropped him.

I do not think that crying equals a bad player.

of course....
But as the Cards have continued to defy odds through the playoffs, I’m seeing a barrage of, “Well, to be fair, he’s good.”

It sure helps to be able to throw to Holt and Bruce, and then Fitzgerald and Boldin.

Untrue

It all revolves around the QB. You can just mix and match everything else.

I don't altogether agree with that.

While having an intelligent and talented Qb, like Warner, can be seen as the hinge of an offense, having the superstar supporting cast ultimately decides his success. Put Warner in a system like the Bears, Niners, Ravens, or Vikings, and mixing and matching wouldn’t do much good. Warner has had the luxury of dual Pro Bowl receivers, and that has proven to make a huge difference in his performance.

All the same though....

It’s not just that he hooks up with those receivers, he meshs really well with them. Give Craig Krenzel all those receivers and see if he puts Warner-like numbers up.

to some extent...

… your sarcasm is true.

But great receivers will help make QB’s better, just as great QB’s will make receivers better.

Before this season I thought

Warner just got lucky and benefited from Martz’s system. All you need is a strong arm and accuracy, throw to a spot and the receiver should be there. And there is evidence to support this; Kitna had a good season under him, he made San Fran QBs look decent, look at what Bulger has done since Martz left, etc. But now I am thinking damn, Warner isn’t half bad.

Fire Ron Turner!!!
Fire Angelo!!

Are we saying we wern't willing to give Warner a shot?

The story that is out there is we were scheduled to bring him in a few years back, but some sort of injury kept him from making the flight. Things went a different direction from there, but we were going to look at him.

Yeah

and then we wouldn’t guarantee he’d have the starting job because, and here’s the kicker, Rex was our QB.

by ChiFan13 on Jan 23, 2009 12:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

sure, but at the time

we didn’t really know what we had in Rex and there were a lot of teams who wouldn’t take him as a starter.

True

but why not bring both in and have a competition? Maybe Lovie could’ve solved it with a quarter.

Maybe Grossman would have been on the bench for a few more years and learned

from old Kurt instead of thinking he was God’s gift to the Bears. The media killed Rexy with love the first part of 06, then took the love away. He’s never been the same.

Kick it to me... I'm open!

seriously?

Hindsight is always 20-20.

Something tells me you were not pissed when the Bears didn’t bring Warner in.

True about hindsight

I was somewhat pissed that we didn’t have a competition. There is nothing wrong with competition because the better QB will always win unless it’s rigged. Which, to be fair, would’ve probably happened in Chicago.

I find all these HOF bound stuff weird

Despite being in the NFL 10 years, he’s started 5. 5! Now part of that is that he never had draft status, but man. Seriously. He’s pretty good, but I don’t think he’s HOF. Not for 5 years.

by halfblindcubbiegirl on Jan 23, 2009 3:00 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I'm not ready to argue the HOF issue yet

but his numbers in those 5 years are very good. He has 2 MVPs in that time, how many did Manning, Brady, Marion, Montana, Young, and whatever list have in their career which was twice as long. Favre has 3 in what 17 season?

Also this is his third SB, if they win and he gets the MVP, those are some pretty impressive stats.

With regards to the hall of fame

Here’s some worthy stats to note:

Second highest completion percentage, career.

Highest Career yards per game.

Highest rate of 300+ yard games.

Regular Season TD/INT 182/114

Super Bowl ring and MVP.

2 Other Super Bowl appearances, with the possibility of another ring.

Not to mention he and those two receivers (well, increasingly, he and that one receiver) have carried a fairly anemic Cardinals team farther than any of them rightly belong.

his total yards aren’t anything to look at, but he was also not a starter for two seasons.

by KDoggers on Jan 23, 2009 4:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes sir.

Which, to me, makes his achievements all that more impressive.

by KDoggers on Jan 24, 2009 8:50 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, if he wins the Superbowl

He’s basically a HOF QB.

As long as he doesn't completely tank it,

he still has a really good shot at going with a loss. At least in my mind.

I'M A MAN! I'M 22!

agreed

He did things in his St. Louis days that were amazing. If he was a starter his entire career, he would definitely be a lock.
