Matt Cassel Update
Sorry, all you Cassel fans (via ESPN):
The New England Patriots have decided to ensure that quarterback Matt Cassel won't be an unrestricted free agent, as scheduled in March.
Sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the Patriots will use a franchise tag on Cassel that will give the team two options: Trade him if all goes well with Tom Brady's rehabilitation from a knee injury or keep him because all is not well with Brady.
The Patriots' intention to franchise Cassel was first reported by the National Football Post.
Looks like we have to look elsewhere for another QB.

Shaub was pretty decent this year when he actually played.

C'mon guys, focus, back to reality
We are the Chicago Bears, we do not go after big time quarter backs. The only way we will ever have a big time quarter back is if we happen to draft our own 6 round nobody out of college that just happens to become a super star. And that’s just the way it is, that’s reality. The only bad thing Papa Bear did for this team, our beloved Chicago Bears, was to leave the team in the hand’s of people who don’t care about us, the fans. Now I believe that Virginia want’s to see the team win because that’s what dad wanted but these McCaskey’s… Please God, help us.

It will be humourous to listen to Angelo's
press conference about the importance of the QB, then he goes out and brings in Chris Simms or a 39 year old Jeff Garcia. There you go Jerry. Way to stabilize the position.

not necessarily
Looks like we have to look elsewhere for another QB.
This isn’t necessarily true. I have read thoughts that the Patriots are franchising him so that they can trade him and get something back in return. If Brady is healthy (and, to be fair, that is a question mark at this point), I cannot see them obligating so much cash to one position.
IF Brady is healthy, both QB’s will not be on the Patriot’s roster next year.

Very true
There is the possibility of a trade. Like you said, there is no way in hell that they will keep two QB’s on their roster for $29 mil. We could in theory get Cassel from the Patriots. If we did though, it would most likely be later in the summer since there are so many conflicting stories about Brady’s rehab.
But we would also have to give up a lot for Cassel.

Not worth it
I’m not opposed to taking a shot at Cassel, but if they franchise him he is due a ton of money. I’m not interested in him at that price.

That's all I've heard.
It’s not certain Brady will be ready by the new season. He’s behind schedule. The theory i"ve heard is that if he’s ready by training camp, they’ll trade Cassell. At that point, what do they really care what they get back? He could have gone for nothing and the only reason they kept him were injury concerns. I don’t think they’d ask for too much.

they can't...
… ask for too much in return with the salary that Cassell will be receiving.

If someone really wants Cassell
What they can do is negotiate a salary with Cassell before the trade. Wants he accepts then you sign the contract. How his contract needs to be setup is, the 14 million for season one needs to be viewed as part of the guaranteed contract and part of the signing bonus. Then you can make years 2-4 or however many seasons you want him, back at the range he probably deserves. The Franchise season is more than he is worth currently, but could be negotiated as part of his signing bonus, just deferred throughout the season. Does that make sense? He is tradeable and you could get good return on him.
I doubt his agent will truly believe he has proved he derserves 14 million a year. They will want guaranteed money and years and a nice salary, maybe 8-10 million a season. I don’t even think he’s proved that he deserves that, but his agent will think so.
