Baltimore VS. Chicago
So this morning while watching ESPN the analysts talked about Baltimore's ability to create take aways and it got me thinking. When Chicago blocks a punt or runs an interception back for a TD we are winning lucky. When Baltimore does it it is not by accident, becuase they work on these things.
Our defense isn't good neither is our offense, but we create takeaways better than any other team over the last 4-5 years, yet for us we are still just getting lucky breaks and lucky bounces of the ball. Baltimore does it and it is because they practice it.

Media Bias
i believe it is the fact that almost every sports caster picks the bears to be the worst team in the league every year and we prove them wrong, so they dismiss it as luck and not ineptitude on there part. 08 every one said we would have the weakest offensive line and be worst in our division. 07 they said we didnt have a starting Q.B on our roster. 06 we cant get to the superbowl with Rex. 05 and so on. Im gonna go on record and say we have as much talent as the dallas cowboys year in and year out and somehow they are headed to the superbowl in june and we are heading to the number 1 draft pick. the truth is that i believe us both to be somewhere in the middle but the media has their favorites.

On the point of us vs Dallas
They have a QB and we don’t, so when you are ranking I accept a knock at our QB, I’m just asking they give us proper due when we have something that works.

Hold on a sec
Who’s saying this? ESPN? They same network that employs Merrill Hodge, Emmitt Smith, and Tony Kornheiser?
Getting an int return for TD is not luck. Teams, like the Bears, practice int, fumble returns for defense so when it occurs, you can actually see the defenders running up field looking to make a block. That’s not luck. It would be luck if the returner was about to be pushed out of bounds and the defender slips and falls 3 feet in front of him.
Blocking a FG, punt, is pure luck. Every week there is about 100 kicks that miss being blocked by about 5 inches. I don’t care what team does it, it’s luck. Sure you can practice getting pressure on the kicker but actually getting your hand, finger, on the ball is luck.
You have to remember that in these situations, the other team isn’t trying to throw ints for TDs or get their kicks blocked so they are practicing not having this happen too. I would even suggest that most offenses practice defense on int returns or fumble returns as well. On returns, it’s all about who executes better, the blockers or defenders.

I know this
I’ve argued this in another thread with somebody, but it just bothered me that when Baltimore does it is because they are hard working, but when we do it we are winning lucky.
I’ll give you that blocking a punt or FG is usually luck, but my point on this one is there are opportunities that are there. Maybe the other team isn’t accounting for somebody, maybe they have left a hole in their blocking, maybe the kicker kicks a line drive. When those things happen a well prepared team will take advantage of them. So yes, maybe it is luck that a team screws up, but it is preparedness that lets you take advantage of them.

Blocking punts and field goals require some luck and some skill
Tillman has blocked several and does it because of speed and awareness. I’m not even sure blocking a punt is luck, maybe a field goal, but when you block more than everyone else and you even come to expect it, I have to say their must be better players and coaches for getting blocks. I credit Dave Toub for being an outstanding special teams coach. He lost tons of important players this year on special teams through FA and injuries and even lost Hester to a big head injury and still his unit makes plays.

practice
think Virginia Tech: they understand that it’s not just dumb luck by mere inches. V.Tech is known for blocking kicks under Frank Beamer, not because they just get lucky but because they work on schemes.
The Bears didn’t simply become lucky blocking kicks when Lovie Smith and Co. took over. Special Teams is the one area where Chicago has improved the most in this regime over the last 20 years of the team. When Tommie Harris is healthy and creates a force in the middle, we will have more blocked FGs again.
Toub has done an excellent job, in all three areas of special teams.

really?
I remember in the Bears’ Super Bowl year all people talked about was how the Bears’ defense created plays. Everyone was talking about the Bears’ ability to create turnovers and play great special teams.
The reason you didn’t hear that this year is because they were not as good doing it, and it also didn’t help the Bears win games.
I think that you are looking for a bias that doesn’t exist.

Ditto.
Baltimore is winning games in January… the media is merely highlighting how they’re doing it.
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

Yeah, but they didn't in 05 when Brown was returning TD's to win games.
They claimed it was all luck.
And the past two seasons he has a point. We’ve gotten no respect for our wins. Well we did after beating the Colts, but that was it.

Uh of course, I'd take Peyton Manning, Randy Moss, and Larry Fitzgerald too.
Let’s go all out!
Actually Reed had a neck injury and many were worried about his career ending because of it. I guess he is living on the verge of a career ending injury. But he made it through this season and kicked butt!

Ah, don't go overboard
If we had Manning and Fitz we would need Moss. Just some fast white dude to fill the middle.

B-More's "D"...
Is not to be trifled with. Go back a few years and we(da bears) had a very solid, dangerous defense also.
As a fan of the Bears I will continue to believe that Lovie Smith can right this ship. His track record tells us so.

The difference between us and Baltimore this year
is they play great defense for 4 quarters. Almost every game our defense sucks for 10-20 minutes at some point. They don’t. Also they pitch shutouts which also shows they play 4 quarters. We would have some if we were consistently making plays like they do. Their defense was much better than ours this season.

Good Post
I was thinking about this during the ravens game this weekend. avoiding the Flacco v. Orton debate… The biggest difference between the teams is Ed Reed (Polamalu if its the Steelers) v. Mike Brown. At his best Brown barely deserves to be in the same sentence. My entire life other teams have been able to pass against the Bears, maybe not run, buyt always pass. We overachieve with a less talented D and they under?achieve (playoffs not too bad) with a more talented D and a better scheme.
In addition, while Ray Lewis and Urlacher are good, i dont feel as tho Urlacher is able/willing to intimidate/motivate his teammates as well as Lewis.

+1 on everything except Flacco and Orton.
Flacco will be a better QB from what I’ve seen. A QB has to be able to get the ball down the field when you need to. Maybe he doesn’t need a Dragon arm but at least be able to make the long play to help your team take some shots. Right now they are prayers for Orton.

It's the difference between being a good team and a bad team, overall.
There’s nothing else. Chicago fans getting their manhood insulted yet again. Be mad at the front office for the shitty product on the field. Ignore the national media pundits. You’ll be better off.

I like our management and hate a lot of our radio media
Don’t get me wrong. I wish Angelo would make some moves, but at least we’re fighting for the playoffs. And a good move this offseason and we could a top team, imo. They do make mistakes, but all management makes mistakes. The grass always seems greener on the other side, but the fact is you still have to mow it.
The radio talk show media is super negative all the time here on 670 am and ESPN 1000. I do love the Comcast Sports shows with Dan Jiggets, Jim Miller, Jerry Azumah and the white guy. I like Larry Mayer and Lou Cannelis and John Thayer… and our play by play guys are the best!!!! But the talk radio guys are so incredibly negative.

and the white guy
I got a good chuckle out of that.
I really don’t like Angelo. Yes, we’re fighting for the playoffs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a whole hell of a lot. If he’s too blind to see that everyone surrounding Orton is a-ok and Orton isn’t, that’s a HUGE problem. Orton is somewhat of a problem, but he pales in comparison to our OL, WR, defensive line in general, and our secondary.

the sports radio talk shows here bash everything in Chicago
even the Cubs and Sox this year they didn’t know how to be happy. The Sox were much better than expected like the Bears and the Cubs were dominant all season and they gripe and complain and don’t seem to enjoy success at all. I know the Cubs bombed in the playoffs, but man, enjoy the wins and quit being paranoid.

Dude, that's what sports radio talk shows are
If they can get people riled up, they get more calls, they get better ratings.
How do you think Boers and Bernstein have stayed on the air so long?
