No Contract For Marinelli, But Still A Possibility

So we now have confirmation that the Bears have not offered former Lions coach Rod Marinelli a contract.

We know he has spoken to Seattle Seahawks about their defensive coordinator job and per this article he has just spoken to the Houston Texans about the same spot.

Houston has an opening for a defensive coordinator as well as a line coach, the position he would be expected to fill for the Bears. The Texans fired defensive coordinator Richard Smith, line coach Jethro Franklin and secondary coach Jon Hoke after an 8-8 finish.

I'd have to guess that after the Bears and Marinelli spoke, he told them he was still had a few interviews for the higher position, if he doesn't get those he'll come back to us.

I don't know if that is a common techinque if it is what we are doing, but JA and Lovie seem to march to a different beat and are okay with the wait and see approach.

Seahawks Filled DCoord. Spot

According to this link, Casey Bradley has been hired as the new Defensive Coordinator in Seattle. Not sure if Marinelli would be willing to take a lesser role with the Seahawks… but if he wanted the Coordinator job, then we can scratch Seattle off of his list of suitors.

The author also says he knows that Derek Anderson

Will either be on the trading block soon, and that if the Browns can’t get anything for him, he will be cut. Also, says that Kellen Winslow will be traded.

Ok, so we are a spot closer to getting him as our

DLine coach.

If this guy knows what he talking about...

I’m not very familiar with NFP, so we’ll see.

Anderson

I wouldn’t be opposed to bringing him in top compete with Orton, he had a bum year but I think he has plenty of talent, enough to put some pressure on Orton.

Is it just me or has QB play gotten worse in the last 10-15 years, I am only 26 but from what I remember back in the day, there were more serviceable QB’s then there are now. Maybe its in my mind but I think part of it is due to the change in College football, using systems totally different then anything used in the NFL. (Spread O, Running QB’s Etc. . . ).

The talent level hasn't really changed...

There are more teams in the league… but there are also more universities with competitive football programs producing talent.

15 years ago (1993), the NFC Central had these lousy QBs:

Lions (10-6): 1. Rodney Peete 2. Eric Kramer 3. Andre Ware
Packers (9-7): 1. Brett Favre 2. Ty Detmer
Vikings (9-7): 1. Jim McMahon 2. Sean Salisbury
Bears (7-9): 1. Jim Harbaugh 2. Peter Tom Willis
Bucs (5-11): 1. Craig Erickson 2. Steve DeBerg 3. Casey Weldon

WOW

I am just impressed you remembered all these guys.

Flash back, the Lions won the division and the Bucs were still in it! Circa 1993, I was 11.

Wasnt Andre Ware a hell of a college QB? Houston to correct?

Where does the linked article confirm that the Bears didn’t offer a contract?

Basically, the 2 newspapers have had conflicting versions from the start.

One reported the Bears offered a contract, and the other disputed the claim. There is undoubtedly a lot of speculation, but until we hear information directly from the Bears, we won’t know for sure…

Ehh.. who cares at this point.

The Bears have already dumped 3 position coaches… looking for fall guys in every direction. Maybe Lovie should look in the mirror.

Preach on Sackman

Lovie’s the problem. It’s his system. Babich is a puppet with Lovie’s hand up his ass. Rivera ran his style D and got fired for it. Lovie took over and the ship has sunk with this D. Unless they get a D coord who calls the shots with no interference from Lovie, this D will continue to underachieve.

by McRipper on Jan 9, 2009 9:40 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I still care at this point.

Beacause even if we hire Marinelli as just a position coach, the more important thing would be having him in place to take over the DCoord position when BoBab get axed. (which may not happen for another season unfortunately)

If Lovie can't admit that switching from Rivera to Babich

contributed to the decline of this defense… then everything else is mute. Lovie isn’t learning from any of his mistakes… and instead, he’s firing position coaches (who he selected to hire in the first place) as a means for finding a fault for the problems that exist.

Lovie IS the problem.

He escorted Rivera out the door. He fired Don Johnson because they didn’t see eye to eye on Mark Anderson. He brought in Adam Archuletta. He influenced the absolutely horrible draft selections of Dan Bazuin and Michael Okwo. He;s the one who’s made Daniel Manning his teacher’s pet, even though Manning continues to make huge mistakes in the secondary. Lovie spreaded his wings after that new contract… and has taken a nose dive ever since.

Maybe we shouldn't be blaming Loive

but Angelo. JA signed Lovie and he is the one who has to fire him. If he wants to continue to let Lovie run the things the way he wants, it falls on Jerry.

Which brings me to the next point...

Jerry has to stop running this team as a GM by committee, put his foot down, and make the tough decisions himself. He’s letting his head coach have too much influence on personnel decisions.

I do have to agree with you on this point

Lovie isn’t Mike Shanahan. Lovie has enough damn trouble running his own roster. Let Angelo make the big decisions, and if they both screw up, we can fire them both!

I wish for so many things from those two….

I look at it the same way I would look at any other company...

The owner has an investment. The owner hires people to protect the investment, and to maximize profits. The people reporting to the owner hire people to get thier hands dirty and make things run. Depending on how big the company is, their may be several levels of employees between the ownership and the scrubs. Ultimately, the Assistants are responsible to the Coordinators, coordinators to the head coach, head coach to the GM, the GM to the executives, and the executives to the ownership. So, when placing blame on how the company is being run, it is hard to blame someone near the bottom.

Hub Arkush has said numerous times...

that Dan Bazuin and Michael Okwo were “Lovie’s draft picks.”

That’s a 2nd and a 3rd round pick from two drafts ago, who didn’t even make the roster out of pre-season last August.

THIS CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN AGAIN.

cutting them was a sign angelo was taking some power back

this is a good sign, even though i’m livid we wasted those picks, bauzin in particular – considering out talent at DE that season, and our needs elsewhere, the pick was inexplicable – its not like he projected to go much higher, which would be the only reason i could see taking him. i hope angelo, and not lovie, runs this draft. given lovie’s inability to get away from the cover-2 when we don’t have the personnel to play it well anymore (if he’s calling the shots on D), or not firing babich when better options are available (if babich is calling the shots on D), i trust him a lot less than i used to.

Marinelli says the interview in Texas "...was great"

And that we’ll wait a few days to see how things work out. So, I take this to mean he has now talked to everyone he is going to talk to, mull it over this weekend, and hopefully make an announcement on Monday.

Link to his interview:

Nope... its not a common technique.

I don’t know if that is a common techinque if it is what we are doing, but JA and Lovie seem to march to a different beat and are okay with the wait and see approach.

Just after two weeks of the 2006 Superbowl, Smith and Angelo had already dubbed Bob Babich the defensive coordinator for the Bears without much of any search. My question has always been, if you were going to promote from within, why make it seem as though Rivera forced your hand? There was no rush to appoint Babich (as he was under contract) and on NO ONE’S radar for a DC position.

This is Marinelli exploring all of his options and trying to find the best fit for him. I applaud it. He needs to be with a team that is going to give him a little more rope than the Bears typically do.
