SB*Nation Highlights TO/ Bears Rumor

Terrell-owens_medium

While it is rare that the Chicago Bears get front-page attention on MSM outlets, our very own SB*Nation has written a piece that is featured on their front page right now.  In light of the topics discussed recently here at WCG, I thought it would be fun to post this on our front page as well.  An excerpt:

T.O. to Bears" is currently the 15th most-searched item on Google, and has a hotness level of "medium" as everyone tries to stay on top of this story.

Some of you think that Terrell Owens is over-the-hill, and don't like the idea of his antics here in Chicago.  But imagine the damage Jay Cutler and Owens could do together...

Like to see T.O. take away playing time from Knox or Hester?

Hell Yeah!

Make this happen A.S.A.P

No.

I’d like to continue to see Knox on the field w/ TO…put hester back on full time return duties.

by Pretender85 on Oct 13, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

I would rather see Hester’s speed on the field on more than just kickoffs. That speed needs to ne taken advantage as much as possible. You can’t coach speed.

Why not?

just have 4 WR sets and make everyone happy?

With 4 wides

You would have No Olsen or Clark and no fullback blocking for Forte.

by Dozjah on Oct 13, 2009 5:04 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

No need for a FB

if the idea is to spread out the defense. Within the 4 WR set the lineup would include 5 linemen, Olsen, Hester, Knox, Forte, TO, and Cutler. Turner could mix and match Bennett in there giving one of those other receivers a break from time to time.

Im glad you are not the Bears G.M

Or else we wouldn’t have any young talent to develop at WR. We would only have 35 year old WR’s on the team. We would only have proven locker room cancers on our team. Thanks now I know what you look for in a football player.

by Dozjah on Oct 13, 2009 4:33 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

What..................................................

Would the Bears have to give up? If it isn’t a 4th rounder or lower then T.O isn’t worth setting our WR corps development back a season.

by Dozjah on Oct 13, 2009 1:40 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

I agreee it depends on what would need to be given up. Think they are interested in Rashied?

I don’t want the Bears to pick up TO. Is that answer enough for you?

by Dozjah on Oct 13, 2009 2:37 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

TO is a borderline h.o.f

Player Earl Bennett is only in his fourth game as a starting WR. I’m not saying that he is better than TO. What I’m saying is who will be the Better WR in 3 to 5 years. TO will be 40 years old by then and out of football. Bennett will still be 20 something in the next 3 to 5 years. So right now Bennett isn’t better but long term he fits the Bears plans more than a 1/2 season of cry baby droppassaholic TO aka team obliterater.

by Dozjah on Oct 13, 2009 2:23 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

So no need to bring players in

if they won’t be able to contribute 3-5 years down the road? Were you against signing Orlando Pace?

Should we not field the best possible starters each game, but rather only starters who will be around years down the road?

No I wasnt against signing Pace

But he was a free agent the bears didn’t have to give up draft picks or slow the development of young talent too get him. Chris Williams moved to the other side of the field not too the bench. These are two totally different situations.

O-Line make a trade for a Guard. WR is not the Bears weakness right now O-line is.

by Dozjah on Oct 13, 2009 1:45 PM CDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

TO

Is probably the best physical WR to ever play the game. His combination of size, power and speed are unmatched. He’s not the same player he once was. I don’t know how much of an upgrade he is at this point in his career, he’s what, 35?

I don’t understand this. The Bears say they are completely satisfied with their WRs. If that’s true, why get TO? Unless he’s basically free, I don’t understand this move. Especially, when they could have made an offer to him when he was a FA this summer. Why now? What has changed from when he got released from the Cowboys to now that has the Bears interested? Is Hester’s injury more serious than they are letting on? Of course, this rumour would have to be true to answer these questions, but still, where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

by McRipper on Oct 13, 2009 1:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I Agree at one time

In his career this guy was a Beast a Freak of nature. Now I wonder if he is worth a franchise setting back the development of their WR corps longterm.

He don’t have to take that much time away. Run 3-4 wr sets. Boom! Superbowl.

Naw you

Still have to have a running game to win the big game.

by Dozjah on Oct 13, 2009 2:09 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

No you definitely do not

Steelers last year? Giants the year before? A running game is not needed to win the big game. You need deadly passing and solid D/ST. Both had decent at best running games.

by careyrd on Oct 13, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You said decent not

No running game at all.

by Dozjah on Oct 13, 2009 3:21 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Pit. or Ari. did not have good running games last year

And I agree 100% that we need help on the O line and on D. But that help is not avaliable right now and WR might be. I wouldn’t give up anything higher than a 4th round pick but I would be excited to see him here. You can run from a 3 reciever set to, I’m not saying to give up on the run. Or maybe we can trade for Benson and Ortman!j/j lol.

by Ryan21 on Oct 13, 2009 3:05 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

They run 3-4 WR sets a lot...

So its not like you couldn’t run TO at #1 and mix knox iglesias and bennett at 2 and 3…put hester back on return duties!!!(as noted above)

there’s no proof anywhere that the Bears are interested in him. I guess you never know though!

Nuts.

No way this happens. No way it should. We’re fine at receiver. Why take playing time away from three young, hungry guys who have done everything right and are likely to be the future of the franchise at the position to take on a 35 year old? If he were five years younger, sure. I wouldn’t make the trade even if they offered to do it for Nate Vasher or Rashied Davis.

I agree

Cutler is, in all aspects, the leader of the offense.

I don’t want TO on the Bears. I’m pleased with the progress our WR’s have made, coupling that with TO’s locker room track record, is my reasoning… TO could come in right now and make this team better (absolutley)…

But as far as long term success (which is what I’d like to see), I don’t think it’s the right move.

The growth of our young receivers would likely slow. That would be unfortunate, considering how far they’ve come from week one.

And for what? a guy that is waayyy past his prime and would likely be here for a season and a half… and probably be dinged up for half of that time…

I’ve seen enough plays from our (only getting better) WR’s to say NO to TO!

by rdent4hof on Oct 13, 2009 2:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly...

Cutler called out B.Marshall last year. And contrary to popular belief, BM is a worse guy to me than TO. The guy has been accused of putting hands on more than one woman and acted like a idiot in practice. 2 things TO hasn’t done. This guy gives his all on the field. Go ask Romo if he misses TO. Nice have a good locker room but if your team sucks…

I say make the move. It would probably cost the Bears a 5th or 4th round pick tops. He’s on a one year deal and is on his best behavior. I think it’s a no brainer

by Dils on Oct 13, 2009 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah well put

But to say the Bears team sucks is a stretch don’t you think? And if the team sucks why bring an old player to take away time from the young guys you need to develop to make your team good for the long haul? T.O is a quick fix that the Bears don’t need. The Bears need to develop some young talent. That is how you win long term in the NFL.

by Dozjah on Oct 13, 2009 2:46 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Im not saying the Bears sucked

I meant Dallas who obviously misses T.O. As far as the Bears are concerned… This isn’t a rebuilding year, we’re trying to win a title. The fact that he’s on a 1 year deal is the very reason you make the deal. It’s a low risk move. I think Earl Bennet can live if his touches are dropped a little bit this season. Hell he wasn’t even on the 53 man roster last year. You make this move because you’re 3-1 in a tight division and he could make the difference.

by Dils on Oct 13, 2009 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It doesnt have to be a rebuilding

Year too develop your young talent. I never said this was a rebuilding year. But this is a development year these young recievers are going to be here with Cutler for years too come. They need to develop an on field chemistry. You do that by playing them with Cutler from start to finish.

Damage

The only damage that TO and Jay Cutler would do together would be to the franchise as a whole. Having just moved from Dallas after being there 7 years, I can tell you that his destruction is slow, methodical, and inevitable. Jay Cutler is still a young and impressionable QB…to put him with TO has the potential of ruining Jay’s season not to mention the development of wide receivers which Jay will be with for (hopefully) years to come.

TO doesn’t bring anything to the table anymore except deceit. It is not worth the gamble.

I don’t agree at all he slows our wr’s development. You can roatate wr’s. I don’t think I’ve seen a 4 wide out set yet and when we have 3, one is usually a te. He might have a lot of drops but so does Olsen and Rashied Davis.

Am i saying to pick up T.O.? No, but look at what Dils is saying. I love Devin hester and Johnny Knox but let’s be serious..they both weigh 180 pounds give or take soaking wet and cannot take a hit. What do you think would happen if Hester or Knox took a hit like Chad Ochocinco took from Ray Lewis in the 4th quarter in Sundays Bal / Cincy game.

I love my receivers but the fact is Hester has not shown us he can complete entire games after taking one or two big hits. he sat out a couple last year after taking a big hit, and look what’s happened this year so far.

People talk all the time that they don’t want a Free Agent coming in and taking time away from developing our receivers. If more people would think outside the box like Dils and think hmm “Maybe a vet receiver( not neccesarily T.O. but someone) could actually help us”, Last time i checked, receivers don’t develop too much when they’re in street clothes on the sidelines nursing an injury.

It’s not worth the possibility that Owens and Cutler could snipe at each other.

No thank you

I don’t think our receivers are playing poorly enough to justify trading for T.O. Yes there are many possible benefits, yes I like the idea of only having to put up with him for 3 months before he’s gone for good, but is it worth it all? No I don’t think so.

The recievers the Bears have now seem fine to me.

And does anyone else think someone photoshopped the hell out of that picture of T.O.?

No more problem children, please

TO has never acted like an adult, and since he’s already long in the tooth and his act has grown tired in the extreme, why would his behavior change suddenly? Because he’s got Cutler now? What, was McNabb a piece of sh-t, or something? Please, no.

by Waylon on Oct 13, 2009 3:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Are we serious that this move

would hold back the development of the current Bears wide receivers? Have you seen the Bears wide receivers? Their is no elite talent here. What the Bears do have is at best a bunch of #3 receivers. Bennett has good hands, but lacks speed. Hester has speed, but lacks receiver instincts and Knox has speed and desire, but lacks size. No, Owens isn’t elite any longer, but he is better than anything the Bears have right now. The goal of every NFL season is to win the Super Bowl. Developing talent is great, but winning is the goal. The era of the dynasty is over and winning now is all that matters. Owens may or may not put the Bears over the hump, but he would most likely make things a lot more interesting for the Bears this season. Trade a pick for him, you can’t lose as he is only on a one year deal and the young guys will get plenty of opportunities as the Bears go to more of a passing attack with each passing week.

I just think...

This looks like a serious “buyer beware” type of deal and fortunately for us, with the way our current wide receivers are playing, and the fact that, as GeauxBears pointed out in another post, we have Jay Cutler, which should attract some serious interest from free agent WR’s next offseason, we have the luxury of playing this issue close to the vest, or conservatively, if you will. No need to rush into something that could potentially bite us in the ass down the road.

After reading some of your other comments

On this thread I think we are like minded in the fact that I am also a supporter of developing what we have. I truly believe that our core group of offensive players have limitless potential. They’re young, abundantly talented, maturing and improving at a rapid rate and to a man seem to all have their heads screwed on straight so to speak. With Cutler, Forte, Hester, Bennett, Knox, and Williams, we just don’t seem to be hearing any locker room “drama” coming from any of these guys(a good thing,IMO).If we can make a couple of solid moves to improve our offensive line positions, more because of age than quality of play, although i know they have struggled out of the gate so far, I think we have the potential to be an offensive powerhouse for quite a few years here. With continued proper development and coaching I believe the group I mentioned is going to contribute heavily in bringing championships to Chicago. It should be fun to watch and its definately a good time to be a Chicago Bears fan for sure! I’ve been one since the year Walter Payton was drafted, so I have witnessed both ends of the spectrum, so to speak.

well that's dumb thing to say tempchad.

Did you miss the part where people said that he is over the proverbial hill for a WR? Did you miss the part where they said it would delay the development of some good young receivers?
Or do you just have a man-crush on the guy who has empirically proven to be detrimental to every locker room he has ever been in? His attitude is undeniable. He used to be a good receiver when there was a play going on, but once the whistle blew he would turn into a baby, runny diaper and all.
BF19- Jason Witten was the best TE in football with TO, you’re absolutely correct there. However, he is also the best without him.

by chigrl on Oct 13, 2009 11:07 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I am not a big T.O. fan...

but I do think this is a case of low risk, high reward (assuming that we do not have to give up too much to get him). I don’t think it will impede the development of our WR’s and possibly could help them if they learned a thing or two from TO.

I do think we have the personnel in place to keep him in check, it is only a 1 yr deal, and he could be a huge factor in making our offense absolutely scary. Yes, there is some risk involved but if he was brought in and started to act up then he can be cut and I don’t believe the Bears are any worse off. I am not saying we bring him in and sign him to a long term-deal … you can bring him in and see if he helps take our offense to the next level.

He is a competitor & I don’t think anyone can argue with that. I think it is similar to the Dodgers taking a chance on Manny …. he was viewed as a possible clubhouse cancer & an older player but he has undoubtedly elevated that Dodger team. It may be a stretch but I think TO can have a similar effect & I don’t think the risk outweighs the reward
